THE NFL WEEK 16 REPORT –
COWBOYS-EAGLES AMONG THE JUICY
TILTS ON THIS SUNDAY-BEFORE-CHRISTMAS SKED …
THE COLLEGE BOWL BLITZ:
WE CHECK OUT MONDAY’S ACTION
BETWEEN UCF VS. MARSHALL
Okay, so it’s true:
There are actually six games on this NFL Week 16 schedule that don’t mean a thing when it comes to playoff implications (and that’s a lot when it comes to this penultimate weekend of regular-season play) but gotta say there’s some real doozies on this weekend’s dance card … what, Dallas at Philly for the NFC East crown doesn’t get the blood boiling?
How about a couple of 11-and-3 teams – that’s New Orleans and, later in the day, Seattle – looking to grab wins #12 against Tennessee and Arizona, respectively.
And what about the surging Baltimore Ravens (12-2) looking for revenge for the last loss they suffered way back in Week 4 … better bring your hard hats, Cleveland Browns!
Now hear this …

NFL WEEK 16
On Sunday, it’s …
NEW ORLEANS (11-3) at TENNESSEE (8-6) – 1 p.m. ET, Fox
So, what does Saints’ slinger Drew Brees do for an encore following Monday Night’s 29-of-30 passing game while setting the league’s all-time touchdown pass record at 541?
New Orleans is eyeballing the NFC’s numero uno playoff seed but closing in on Titans’ RB Derrick Henry (1,329 yards rushing with 13 TDs) is the key here.
Spread Notes – New Orleans has alternated pointspread wins / losses the past seven weeks (and the Saints are coming off that 34-7 win /cover against 8-point pup Indianapolis this past Monday Night) and overall NO is 39-26-1 (that’s .600) since the start of 2016; Tennessee has covered four of its last five overall games.
DALLAS (7-7) at PHILADELPHIA (7-7) – 4:25 p.m. ET, Fox
Win and you’re in, Cowboys! The NFC’s somebody-gotta-win-it NFC East is up for grabs – remember the Eagles must win their final two games to secure the divisional crown – and all the talk is about Dallas QB Dak Prescott and his bum shoulder / bad finger.
Wouldn’t it be something if the “other QB” – Philly’s Carson Wentz (25 TDs / 7 INTs) – was the one who answered the bell here?
Spread Notes – Dallas is an electric 14-5 ATS when playing against fellow NFC East foes the past two-plus seasons; Philadelphia is 5-9 ATS this season and did you know the Eagles are 4-10-1 spreadwise at home these past two seasons?
On Sunday Night, it’s …
KANSAS CITY (10-4) at CHICAGO (7-7) – 8:20 p.m. ET, NBC
The KC Chiefs are keeping fingers crossed that they can slip into the #2 AFC playoff seed one of these last two weeks but the $64,000 question here is Kansas City’s suddenly-shiny defense (allowed just 45 total points during this current four-game winning streak) keep Bears’ QB Mitch Trubisky under wraps and in the pocket where he does a whole lot less damage.
Spread Notes – Chicago is an NFL-worst 4-9 versus the vig this year; Kansas City, on the other hand, zooms into this prime-time affair riding a four-game spread winning streak but the Chiefs have failed to cover six of their last nine games played against NFC competition.
COLLEGE BOWL BONANZA
On Monday, it’s …
GASPARILLA BOWL – at Tampa, FL
MARSHALL (8-4) vs. UCF (9-3) – 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
It’s the one-and-only bowl bash here two days before Christmas and note UCF’s a whopping 17-point betting favorite even though this year’s Knights lost three games SU (straight-up) after having gone a composite 25-1 SU the prior two seasons. Big question is whether NFL-bound WR Gabriel Davis (1,245 yards receiving with 12 TDs) plays after alerting head coach Josh Heupel he may sit this one out.
Marshall’s won seven consecutive bowl games but a lowly 95th-ranked passing game could muddle things if this Conference USA crew gets down by twin figures early … note only one Marshall pass-catcher has more than 25 receptions (see TE Armani Levias with 43 grabs).
Spread Notes – Despite a shoddy 5-7 ATS mark this season, the UCF Knights are a collective 30-18 ATS since the start of the 2016 season (that’s a .625 winning rate). On the flip side, Marshall’s 4-8 versus the vig this year but – get this -- the Thundering Herd is 7-and-oh spreadwise in all its bowl games since 2009!
NOTE: We’ve got the NFL Week 16 Monday Night Football preview – that’s Green Bay at Minnesota – plus more Bowl Game goodies in the next edition of Jim Sez. Be cashin’ all holiday season long with Jim Hurley’s Network at 1-800-323-4453.
