COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WEEKEND

Tonight, it’s …

PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – at Santa Clara, CA

#5 UTAH (11-1, 8-1) vs. #13 OREGON (10-2, 8-1) – 8 p.m. ET, ABC

Get this: Only twice in the albeit brief five-year history of the College Football Playoffs have Pac-12 teams made the cut (see 2016 Washington and 2014 Oregon) but if Utah can win this game “by a margin” and 4th-ranked Georgia loses to #2 LSU on Saturday then the hot-hot-hot Utes should get a playoff nod.

Note that a Utah team that’s won eight in a row SU (straight-up) by a per-game average of 29 ppg sports a real 1-2 punch on offense as QB Tyler Huntley (16 TDs / 2 INTs) and RB Zack Moss (1,246 yards rushing and 15 TDs) are the real deal and this “D” ranks third in the nation (and first against the rush). Keep in mind that Oregon QB Justin Herbert (3,140 yards passing, 31 TDs, 5 INTs) can be streaky.

Spread Stats – Oregon is a rotten 3-11-1 ATS (against the spread) as underdog sides since the start of the 2016 season; Utah is 9-3 spreadwise overall this year including a current eight-game winning streak.

On Saturday, it’s …

BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – at Arlington, TX

#7 BAYLOR (11-1, 8-1) vs #6 OKLAHOMA (11-1, 8-1) – 12 p.m. ET, ABC

Interesting twist here ‘cause the TD-plus OU Sooners will head into this matinee clash knowing what #5 Utah did last night – and Lincoln Riley’s club may have to do a

little more than simply “match” the Utes.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts (31 TD passes, 18 TD rushes) leads an Oklahoma offense that averages 44.3 ppg but don’t sleep on a Baylor attack that’s scored 28+ points on eight different occasions this year with the QB Charlie Brewer-to-WR Denzel Mims tandem extremely explosive (Mims has 945

yards receiving and 11 TDs while Brewer has 20 passing TDs and 10 rushing scores).

Spread Stats – Baylor rides a four-game pointspread winning streak into this clash and the Bears are 3-and-oh vig-wise as underdogs this year; Oklahoma sports a crummy 5-7 ATS mark so far this season but the OU Sooners have covered five of their last six games as single-digit betting favorites.

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME—at Atlanta, GA

#4 GEORGIA (11-1, 7-1) vs. #2 LSU (12-0, 8-0) – 4 p.m. ET, CBS

It doesn’t take a proverbial brain surgeon to tell you that the 6.5-point underdog Georgia Dawgs would prefer a low-scoring game here in the dome while the country’s top-ranked offense from LSU wants indoors fireworks -- but can Bengals’ QB Joe Burrow (4,366 yards passing with 44 TDs) have his way against a defense ranked second in the land with a star-studded secondary?

Maybe the real key here will be whether Georgia QB Jake Fromm (2,385 yards passing but only 3 INTs) makes all the right moves in the red zone … the Bulldogs have allowed more than 21 points zero times this year and are 7-3 spreadwise whenever scoring 20+ points.

Spread Stats – Georgia is 6-2 against the odds as point-grabbers the past three-plus seasons and an electric 17-4 ATS away since the start of the ’17 campaign; LSU is 16-7-1 spreadwise when playing fellow SEC foes.

ACC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – at Charlotte, NC

#23 VIRGINIA (9-3, 6-2) vs. #3 CLEMSON (12-0, 8-0) – 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC

Getting tired of this act by Clemson HC Dabo Swinney (the us-against-the CFP voters) that’s been runnin’ the past few weeks? Us too!

Meanwhile, fact of the matter is the defending champs have outscored ACC foes this year by a 46-to-10 per-game average mark and so no shocker that the pointspread for this game is nearing the 30-point mark with QB Trevor Lawrence (2,870 yards passing with 30 TDs) finally able to straighten out his earlier-season INT woes.

Spread Stats – Clemson is a collective 21-8-1 ATS since late in the 2017 season and that includes a nifty 13-5-1 spread log whenever laying 20-or-more points; Virginia’s covered six of its last nine tilts as wagering pups since the start of last season.

BIG 10 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – at Indianapolis, IN

#1 OHIO STATE (12-0, 9-0) vs.#8 WISCONSIN (10-2, 7-2) – 8 p.m. ET, Fox

If you’re mesmerized by stats, then consider the following:

The top-ranked O-State Buckeyes average 49.9 ppg (#1 in the land) and they win their games by 38 ppg and all know plenty about QB Justin Fields (2,654 passing yards with 37 TDs and 1 INT) and RB J.K. Dobbins (1,657 yards rushing with 189 TDs) but did you have the slightest idea that the Columbus kids rank fourth nationally in rushing defense and first in overall defense? Didn’t think so!

And, so, if Wisky RB Jonathan Taylor (1,761 yards rushing and 20 TDs) wants to have his Badgers send shock waves throughout college football on this first Saturday night in December than cracking the code of this State defense will be uber-important.

Spread Stats – Ohio State is 9-3 ATS overall this year and, as we reminded y’all at the start of the week, the Buckeyes have won /covered their last three consecutive Big 10 Championship Games dating back to 2014; Wisconsin started out this season with five covers in its first six games but the Badgers are just 7-5 ATS this year and just 11-14 spreadwise these past two seasons.

Here’s the other Conference Championship Games here on Saturday, Dec.6th with quick-hitter spread stats:

MID AMERICA CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Miami (Ohio) vs. Central Michigan – at Detroit, MI, 12 p.m. ET, espn2

Central Michigan’s a spiffy 9-2-1 ATS this season

SUN BELT CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

UL-Lafayette at #21 Appalachian State – 12 p.m. ET, ESPN

Did you know App State is 20-7-1 ATS overall since late 2017?

CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

UAB at Florida Atlantic – 1:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

Host team Florida Atlantic (a/k/a FAU) is 7-3 vig-wise as betting favorites this year

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

#20 Cincinnati at #17 Memphis – 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

Since the start of the 2017 season, this Memphis crew is 12-5-1 ATS at home

MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIOSNHIP GAME

Hawaii at #19 Boise State – 4 p.m.ET, ESPN

We kid you not: Boise State’s failed to cover its last three consecutive MWC title tilts (see 2014, ’17 and ’18)

NFL WEEK 14 UPDATE

Don’t worry, Dallas Cowboys fans … we weren’t kidding the other day when we said someone could win the NFC East with a 7-9 SU record.

Last night the ‘Boys were beaten one mo’ time as the 3-point underdog Chicago Bears copped a 31-24 win that was never that quite close … despite the fact Dallas opened the game with a 17-play touchdown drive. Gotta say that this Jim Hurley Network winner had the right feel as Bears’ QB Mitchell Trubisky (244 yards passing with 3 TDs) did some major damage with his legs (finally!) and Chicago’s injury-rattled defense made a series of big stops, especially on third-down plays.

Could Chicago (7-6) still be alive in the NFC playoff hunt? You betcha!
