Three cheers for the Pittsburgh Steelers … they’ve finally cracked the seal with the team’s first win of this 2019 season, thanks to last night’s rollicking 27-3 win / cover against the 3.5-point underdog Cincinnati Bengals (so much for that Las Vegas line move during the week!).
The Steelers are just 1-3 SU (straight-up) so far this year after playing in 14 post-season games – including a pair of Super Bowls -- under 13th-year head coach Mike Tomlin while dating back to 2007. But after losing back-to-back-to-back at New England, home to Seattle and at San Francisco (the first two with veteran QB Ben Roethlisberger starting, the last two with Mason Rudolph at the helm) Tomlin’s team snagged a long-lost win.
The $64,000 question is whether the Steelers now can re-insert themselves back into the AFC North race that currently stars Baltimore and Cleveland sitting tied atop the pack at 2-2. The Steelers’ sked features a home game against the Ravens this Sunday, a road game at the Los Angeles Chargers and then a Week 7 bye. But hold on: Pittsburgh returns from the bye with three straight home games against Miami / Indianapolis / LA Rams and only these Rams currently sport a winning record … hmm.
Sure, last night the Steelers showed a mighty pass rush (see eight sacks) while kid QB Rudolph threw for 229 yards and two TDs and do-it-all RB James Conner chipped in with 125 scrimmage yards and a receiving score.
There’s life in them Steelers, after all.
Ladies and gents …

COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPDATE
It’s sneak-a-peek time … there’s a bevy of big games on Saturday’s docket and here’s a little sampling of the key storylines:
There’s a new interim head coach at Rutgers (8-32 SU these past three-plus seasons under exiled head coach Chris Ash) in TE coach Nunzio Campanile – love sayin’ that name! – but the question is whether the Scarlet Knights will be respectable or will they be a cash-burner versus the vig. Note Rutgers registered a decent 18-20 ATS (against the spread) mark under the over-his-head Ash. P.S., Rutgers has been blanked in both of its Big 10 games this year – a 30-0 loss at 17.5-point favorite Iowa and then last weekend’s 52-0 loss at four-TD fav Michigan …
No doubt we’ll be hearing plenty about “lookahead games” in the week ahead: Specifically, the Texas Longhorns are at 11-point pup West Virginia in the game before playing old rival Oklahoma.
Did you know that Texas is a collective 2-8 against the odds in the game immediately preceding Oklahoma the past 10 years? You can look it up! …
And we continue to keep our eyes on born-again SMU: Note the Ponies – who are 5-0 SU and 5-0 ATS this season under second-year boss-man Sonny Dykes – have been no better than 7-4 ATS the past decade but this could be a major cash cow here for the Dallas kids. Next up a home game against double-digit dog Tulsa.
