COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S KEY WEEKEND SHOWDOWNS - WE'RE CHECKING OUT #1 CLEMSON, #5 OKLAHOMA AND #6 OHIO STATE AS TRUE HEAVY-DUTY ROAD FAVORITES AND THE "CY-HAWK" RIVALRY GAME IS HERE ...
THE NFL WEEK 2 UPDATE: BUCS BOUNCE PANTHERS 20-14 PLUS, WILL FIRST-YEAR COACHES BOUNCE BACK FROM A CRUMMY WEEK 1?
No doubt there's some good under-the-radar non-Top 25 games on this weekend's College Football docket - how about this evening's North Carolina at Wake Forest bash at 6 p.m. Eastern time on ESPN along with tomorrow's tilts between Kansas State at Miss State, Air Force at Colorado and TCU at Purdue. All really good stuff although we'll spend a moment on some of the ranked teams below with some quick-hitter Jim Sez commentary.

THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKEND MENU
#6 OHIO STATE (2-0) at INDIANA (2-0) - 12 p.m. ET, Fox
The Justin Fields Era is off and rollin' as Ohio State's buried its first two foes by a grand total of 66 points. Fields has 6 TDs and 0 INTs so far but it's a potent Buckeyes' ground game averaging 5.4 yards per pop that could be the death blow to 17.5-point (and growing) dog Indiana here.
Spread Note - Believe it or not, Ohio State is a money-losing 17-20 ATS (against the spread) in Big 10 games the past four-plus seasons and that includes three-of-four pointspread losses against the IU Hoosiers.
#19 IOWA (2-0) at IOWA STATE (1-0) - 4 p.m. ET, FS1
Famed "Cy-Hawk" rivalry game is here and note the Iowa Hawkeyes have won each of the last four head-to-head hoedowns and twice in this recent time span the 'Eyes have held Iowa State to 3 points ... can this Cyclones' defense slow down a powerful Iowa rushing attack (see 203.5 ypg through two weeks) and will I-State slinger Brock Purdy (278 yards passing / 2 TDs against Northern Iowa two weeks ago in 3-OT win) have the time to haul off some deep throws here?
Spread Note - Go back to the start of the 2016 season and you'll see Iowa State's a nifty 18-7 versus the vig as underdog sides (that's a .720 winning rate) while Iowa is 11-6-1 ATS as betting favorites the last two-plus seasons.
#1 CLEMSON (2-0) at SYRACUSE (1-1) - 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC
Go ahead and pencil in the Clemson Tigers to another playoff berth ... already. This game doesn't figure to be much of a challenge - Dabo Swinney's guys are a four-TD betting favorite at the Carrier Dome - and QB Trevor Lawrence is just starting to get heated up.
Spread Note - Clemson's an electric 8-2-1 spreadwise as twin-digit favorites since early last season.
#5 OKLAHOMA (2-0) at UCLA (0-2) - 8 p.m. ET, Fox
Surprise, surprise. The Oklahoma Sooners already rank as the numero uno club in the land in total offense after scoring 119 points against Houston / South Dakota and so Lincoln Riley's squad will ask for transfer QB Jalen Hurts (591 yards passing / 6 TDs) to keep on truckin' but how about a word on the Uclans? They're now 3-11 SU (straight-up) and 5-8-1 ATS in the Chip Kelly Era and don't look now but the Bruins rank 127th nationally in total offense among 130 FBS teams. Help!
Spread Note - Oklahoma has failed to cover four of its last five games when laying a double-digit price and that includes a split of its two games this year against Houston (a 49-31 spread loss as 22-point favs and last week's 70-14 win against 47-point dog South Dakota).
THE NFL WEEK 2 REPORT
Memo to the here-and-now Carolina Panthers: You're 0-2 SU and ATS and you haven't even had to pack a travel bag yet!
Last night's uninspiring 20-14 home loss to the 6.5-point road underdog Tampa Bay Bucs did feature one long-ball completion (see 44 yards) by Carolina QB Cam Newton but not much else as the Panthers - coming off that season-opening 30-27 loss to the Los Angeles Rams - managed a meager four fields goals plus one late-game safety after T-Bay executed a great goal-line stand. Check out the sked and you see the Panthers have road games at Arizona and at Houston these next two weeks and there's only one home game these next six weeks ... that's a Week 5 bash versus Jacksonville.
Is this 2019 season over for the Panthers even before it even gets to October? Could be.
One other NFL-related item here ...
NFL first-year head coaches were major money-burners in Week 1 with a 2-and-5 pointspread mark - Arizona (with Kliff Kingsbury) and Cincinnati (with Zac Taylor) snagged spread wins even though neither won the game (Cardinals tie Detroit, Bengals lose by a single point in Seattle).
Meanwhile, the New York Jets (Adam Gase), Miami (Brian Flores), Cleveland (Freddie Kitchens) and Denver (Vic Fangio) all were spread losers in Week 1 while Tampa Bay's Bruce Arians already "bounced back" from a Week 1 loss to San Francisco with the Bucs' aforementioned win last night in Charlotte. Will the other first-year guys be as successful here after a rough Week 1?
