COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT
On Friday, it's ...
PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - at Santa Clara, CA
#17 UTAH (9-3) vs. #16 WASHINGTON (9-3) - 8 p.m. ET, Fox
Washington snapped a six-game ATS (against the spread) losing skid with last Friday's 28-15 win at 3-point favorite Washington State (a Jim Hurley Network winner), so now the Huskies are 3-9 versus the vig overall this season; Utah enters its first-ever Pac-12 Championship Game having covered six-of-nine league affairs this year but one of the losers was a 21-7 setback at home to 4-point road fav Washington back on Sept. 15th.
On Saturday, it's ...
BIG 12 CHAMPIONSIP GAME - at Arlington, TX
#14 TEXAS (9-3) vs. #6 OKLAHOMA (11-1) - 12 p.m. ET, ABC
Go back to the 2013 season and you'll see that Texas has covered six in a row against archrival Oklahoma and that includes this year's 48-45 outright win by the 7.5-point underdog Longhorns (and that happens to be the current Las Vegas price tag for this title tilt). Overall, the OU Sooners are 4-8-1 against the odds while dating back to last year's double-overtime playoff loss to Georgia.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - at Orlando, FL
MEMPHIS (8-4) at #9 UCF (11-0) - 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
Believe it or not, the UCF Knights now are a collective 17-6 ATS since the very start of the 2017 season (that's 15-6 as betting favorites and 2-0 as the underdog sides) while Memphis roars into this bash riding a four-game spread winning streak with a note that the Tigers have covered 13 of their last 19 pointspread verdicts while dating back to the middle of last year.
ACC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - at Charlotte, NC
#2 CLEMSON (12-0) vs. #24 PITTSBURGH (7-5) - 8 p.m. ET, ABC
This marks the fourth consecutive year the Clemson Tigers have made it to the ACC Championship Game - and against now a fourth different opponent (see North Carolina in 2015, Virginia Tech in '16 and Miami last year) -- but did you know Clemson's only 27-24-2 ATS overall since the start of the 2015 campaign? In case you're wondering, the Tigers have covered two of the last three title games with the lone non-cover happening in 2016 (see 11-point fav Clemson 42, V-Tech 35). Pittsburgh's covered six of its last seven games this year while heading into Saturday's showdown as nearly 4-TD underdogs.
We'll have a few more College Football Conference Championship Game Key Spread Stats later this week here at Jim Sez.
NFL WEEK 13 NEWS / NOTES
First things first and that's NFL Week 12 Betting Favorites registered a rock-solid 9-5-0 ATS mark with one Pick 'Em game in the mix (see Cleveland 35, Cincinnati 20 ... a big-time Jim Hurley Network Winner!) and so that means we'll enter NFL Week 13 with Betting Favorites at 78-87-7 ATS with 7 Pick 'Ems (a .473 winning rate for chalk sides). Also, take note that NFL "Overs" are 88-87-1 spreadwise this year (that's a .503 winning rate) as the continued adjustments up in price have kept Overs/Unders at a practical dead-even pace.
Okay, two quick items as we head towards Thursday's Saints-Cowboys game:
In our minds it's time to stay away from a handful of free-falling clubs the rest of this 2018 season - no matter the price tags ... we're talking Arizona, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, the New York Jets and San Francisco. Check out this quartet of teams and you'll see they are a composite 4-23-2 ATS the past few weeks. Ugh! Some of these teams "desire" a high draft pick and could be - dare we say it - tanking!
And, finally, nobody asked but with five weeks of NFL regular-season play remaining we'd rank our here-and-now Most Valuable Player top candidates to be ...
1. Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans
2. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City
3. Philip Rivers, QB, Los Angeles Chargers
4. Todd Gurley, RB, Los Angeles Rams
5. Andrew Luck, QB, Indianapolis.
NOTE: Catch our Saints-Cowboys preview in Thursday's edition of Jim Sez.
