THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK –

THE TOP CHALK PLAYS (SO FAR) IN 2018

PLUS, THREE KEY SATURDAY PREVIEWS …

NFL WEEK 8 OFF-AND-ROLLIN’ WITH

THE RED-HOT TEXANS SNAGGING 42-23 WIN/COVER

AGAINST THE FISH

Quick …

Who’s been the best bets in College Football this year when placed in the role of Favorites?

Ahh, you might blurt out the name Alabama but truth is the nation’s unquestioned #1 team is only a modestly-successful 5-3 ATS (against the spread) thus far while laying anywhere from 23-to-48.5 points;

Maybe you think it’s Clemson … and you’d be wrong ‘cause the Tigers are just 3-4 versus the vig as chalk sides this ’18 season.

Okay, we’ll clue you in with the real cream-of-the-crop teams as Betting Favorites in today’s Jim Sez:

The kings of the hill so far are Fresno State and Iowa … really! Both teams weigh in at 6-0 against the odds when favored and note the Fresno State Bulldogs are a perfect 5-0 spreadwise whenever laying twin-figure prices, so there! The Iowa Hawkeyes will be pups this weekend at Penn State but Kirk Ferentz’s squad does come off three consecutive Big 10 chalk covers against Minnesota, Indiana and Maryland;

Texas Tech’s covered all three of its games when placed in the favorite’s role (pointspread wins against Lamar, Houston and Kansas); and so has Virginia which owns an ACC pointspread victory against Louisville;

Washington State’s 4-0-1 against the odds as favorites this fall and that – of course – includes last weekend’s 34-20 triumph over 3.5-point dog Oregon;

Utah State is a nifty 5-1 ATS when laying points and that includes wins/covers against Air Force and BYU;

Appalachian State’s covered 4-of-5 games when in the point-laying role; and ditto for Florida, Georgia Southern, Texas A&M and UAB;

Troy State is 4-1-1 vig-wise as Betting Favorites this season;

And UCF is a tidy 5-2 against the Las Vegas prices whenever laying points

The College Football sked is a busy one this weekend and includes Five (5) games on this Friday night with Miami at Boston College (7 p.m. ET on ESPN) and Utah at UCLA (10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN) great TV action.

On Saturday, it’s …

#9 FLORIDA (6-1, 4-1) vs. #7 GEORGIA (6-1, 4-1) – 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

We know, we know. The politically correct folks no longer refer to this as the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” but it’s still one of the country’s great rivalry games and note these clubs (fresh off bye weeks) come into Saturday from different ends of the spectrum: Georgia comes into this SEC affair off a 20-point loss at LSU two weekends ago and so the heat’s been turned up on soph QB Jake Fromm (13 TDs and 4 INTs) who may have a short leash here, so keep an eye on backup Josh Fields. On the flip side, Florida zooms in on a five-game winning streak – the Gators are a tasty 6-1 ATS – and much-improved QB Feleipe Franks (15 TDs / 5 INTs) should be looking for some downfield chucks against a vulnerable Dawgs secondary.

Head-to-Head Spread Stat – Florida’s covered seven of the last 10 games in this SEC rivalry.

#6 TEXAS (6-1, 4-0) at OKLAHOMA STATE (4-3, 1-3) – 8 p.m. ET, ABC

Hard to believe that the Okie State Cowboys have beaten the Texas Longhorns in four of their last five – and seven of their last nine – showdowns and a “W” here by the Cowpokes will deflate any/all national championship hopes this ‘Horns side has for 2018.The number’s been climbing – Texas opened as a 1.5-point fav in this Big 12 bash and it’s risen to -3.5 points – but it’s no done deal that QB Sam Ehlinger (shoulder) will play here, so oft-erratic Shane Buechele could get the nod. One X-factor to watch here in this prime-timer: Oklahoma State RB Justice Hill (11 carries for 41 yards in a pre-bye 31-12 loss at Kansas State) has to get minimum 25 totes here … or else!

Head-to-Head Spread Stat – The road teams are 7-2-1 against the odds in the past 10 Longhorns vs. Cowboys tilts.

#14 WASHINGTON STATE (6-1, 3-1) at #24 STANFORD (5-2, 3-1) – 7 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network

Better believe the aforementioned Washington State Cougars are getting loads of respect from Mr. Oddsmaker: Mike Leach’s crew is a delicious 6-0-1 against the odds overall this year and now the Coogs are “only” a 3-point road dog here in Palo Alto where the Cardinal is 59-9 SU (straight-up) the past 10-plus seasons. The $64,000 question here is will Stanford’s sluggish pass defense – ranked next-to-last in the Pac-12 this year – be able to hold the fort against Wazzu slinger Gardner Minshew (2,745 yards passing with 23 TDs and 6 INTs)?

Head-to-Head Spread Stat – Point-grabbing Washington State’s covered the last three in a row in this Pac-12 series versus Stanford.

NFL WEEK 8

It’s a little funny that the best play in Houston’s runaway-and-hide 42-23 win/cover against the 7.5-point underdog Miami Dolphins didn’t even count – by know you saw WR DeAndre Hopkins one-handed snatch catch that wound up resting against the back of his leg (penalties on both teams negated the play) but the bottom line here is the Texans are riding a five-game SU winning streak and QB Deshaun Watson – bad lung and all – wound up with five TD passes against the Fish and threw only four incompletions. How about those 40 fantasy points, boys and girls!
