NFL WEEK 2 IS STRAIGHT AHEAD –

NOW WILL YOU BE LAYING “TOO MANY POINTS”

WITH DESPERATE FALCONS, STEELERS & SAINTS? …

THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT:

OUR JIM SEZ TOP 10 PLUS A WHOLE LOT MORE

Don’t dare tell us that folks – including the ones in Las Vegas – don’t “overreact” after NFL Week 1 games have been played!

Heck, you would think the world is coming to an end if you listened to fans of the Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints – none of whom won (or cashed) in their respective season-opening tilts and do keep in mind that Pittsburgh’s 21-all tie in Cleveland last Sunday could either help or hurt the team’s post-season cause come late December.

In reality, it’s only one game as folks like to say but check out the price tags for Sunday’s NFL Week 2 affairs and – in our humble opinion – the Falcons (- 5.5 over Carolina), the Steelers (-5 over Kansas City) and the Saints (- 8.5 over Cleveland) are laying richer-than-normal points here as they are considered “desperate” for a win.

Two things here:
First, no Week 2 game in the NFL is ever – as in ever – a “must-win” game because we’ve seen plenty of teams that started 0-2 SU (straight-up) make it to the post-season and even win the Super Bowl (see the 1993 Dallas Cowboys);

And, secondly, whether you’re a chalk guy/gal or not, you never should pay through the nose with a pointspread just because conventional wisdom says someone “has to win this game”.

Okay, so check with us come Sunday morning at the Jim Hurley Network – that’s at the toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453 or right here online at www.jimhurley.com – and we’ll let you know where we stand with these high-profile games and let’s just say don’t be shocked if we’re on one (or more) of the point-taking sides. In fact, we plan on piling up loads of profits this whole NFL 2018 season and so make sure you get Thursday’s Side & Totals winners between the Baltimore Ravens at the Cincinnati Bengals and get all our College Football and Major-League Baseball winners too right through the month of September.

In case you were wondering, NFL Week 1 Betting Favorites finished up at a dead-even but vig-losing 7-7-1 ATS (against the spread) with one Pick ‘Em game (see Tennessee at Miami) tossed into the mix. Overall, road favorites covered three-of-five games including Monday’s 33-13 triumph by the 6.5-point fav Los Angeles Rams over the Oakland Raiders. If you stayed up late for that west coast clash, you noticed that it was same ole Raiders under old / new coach Jon Gruden (see 10 penalties for 145 yards) to go along with those three INTs of QB Derek Carr – keep in mind the Raiders must be 8-8 to cash their over/under wins bet for the season and gotta say silver-and-black fans have to be a little queasy right about now.

Finally, just as we warned you up above about laying richer-than-usual prices this weekend with the Falcons, Steelers and Saints, it’s possible you might wind up getting bargain prices with two teams that were rotten in Week 1: Both the Buffalo Bills (+ 7.5 at home against the Los Angeles Chargers) and the Detroit Lions (+5.5 at San Francisco this Sunday) might be considered “dead items” by the novice handicapper but both could be dangerous plus a bundle of points here.

THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT

Okay, so Hurricane Florence is roaring through the coastal areas of the southeast portion of the United States and it’s already KO’d a couple of games – UCF at North Carolina and West Virginia at N.C. State have both been postponed and there could be more – but there’s still a juicy menu this Saturday including Boise State at Oklahoma State, LSU at Auburn, USC at Texas and Ohio State vs. TCU in Arlington … and be sure we’ll preview all of those games later this week right here at Jim Sez but let’s take a few moments to check out some of the early-season “surprise” teams in college football:

ARIZONA STATE – All hail the “Herm-inator” as born-again head coach Herm Edwards has breathed major life back in this Sun Devils’ program following season-starting wins/covers against UTSA and Michigan State. Note that A-State has not started off a season at 3-0 spreadwise in more than a decade but here Edwards’ crew is laying 4.5 points this Saturday at San Diego State and defense – so far – has been the calling card after yielding a grand total of 20 points in these first two games.

CINCINNATI – Following back-to-back 4-8 SU campaigns, the Bearcats promised their followers than this ’18 season would be different … so far, so good. Cincy blasted two-TD favorite UCLA 26-17 two weekends ago and then last Saturday bested 1-point fav Miami 21-0. Okay, so you may not want to get involved in laying some crazy price against Alabama A&M this weekend but sneak a peek to later this season when the B-Cats will be gobbling up points against USF and at UCF.

MARYLAND – After this summer’s tragic death of lineman Jordan McNair, the Terrapins were considered the poster boys of everything that’s wrong with college football but interim head coach Matt Canada (the team’s former co-offensive coordinator) has been spreading positive vibes with this club following the 34-29 win against 12.5-point favorite Texas and then last week’s 45-14 win/cover against two-TD pup Bowling Green. Now, Maryland’s laying 15 points this weekend against Temple and gotta go all the way back to the 2010 season to find the last time the Terps really have a profitable campaign (8-4 spreadwise back then).

VANDERBILT – Don’t look now but the Commodores won/covered their season-starting games against Middle Tennessee State and Nevada (and by a combined point total of 76-17) but can Derek Mason’s crew hang tough as two-TD underdogs at Notre Dame this weekend? One final spread fact here on Vandy: The ‘Dores have covered their last five consecutive non-SEC games, so there!
