This just in:

The defending Super Bowl champions may need a “Philly Special” should QB Nick Foles be out for any prolonged period of time. Last night Foles suffered a now much-discussed shoulder sprain in that 37-20 loss at 4.5-point favorite New England and we’ve already witnessed those video clips of one-time Eagles’ starting QB Carson Wentz (and he doesn’t appear to be very mobile now, does he?).

Hey, is this any way to start a run to back-to-back titles?

Naturally, Foles’ injury was / is the “worst case scenario” that NFL teams and coaches always worry about but as long as these preseason games are played there’s always the injury factor and don’t you just know that folks in Green Bay were holding their breath on that one “now-you-see-me, now-you-don’t” scramble by Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers in the team’s 51-34 triumph over 6-point pup Pittsburgh and what about the New York Jets who cringed when rookie QB Sam Darnold went down on that one sack in NYJ’s last-second 15-13 loss at 2-point dog Washington?

Now hear this …

Tonight, it’s …

NEW YORK GIANTS (0-1) at DETROIT (0-1) – 7 p.m. ET

Folks, we’re not even gonna waste a moment of your valuable time on the silly stuff said in a recent magazine article by Jacksonville CB Jalen Ramsey – he basically commented that Giants’ QB Eli Manning was nothing without WR Odell Beckham, Jr. while apparently oblivious to the fact Manning win two Super Bowl MVPs WITHOUT Beckham! – but the bottom line here is Manning looked sharp in intra-squad scrimmages conducted with the Lions this past week though we don’t necessarily think Beckham will suit up here. Hey, if #2 QB Davis Webb – awful in last week’s 20-10 loss to Cleveland – doesn’t trend upwards here than rookie Kyle Lauletta (Delaware) might be movin’ up the depth charts quicker than even he thought. The Lions, meanwhile, rested rookie RB Kerryon Johnson (Auburn) earlier this week but he’s expected to play a batch of snaps here though it’s worth noting RB Theo Riddick has been sluggish in practice and may need a kick-start game .. or else.

Current Line: Lions – 3 and 40 points

BUFFALO (0-1) at CLEVELAND (1-0) – 7:30 p.m. ET, NFL Network

The kings of HBO’s Hard Knocks, the here-and-now Cleveland Browns are an interesting team that’s now facing ex-teammate WR Corey Coleman who “demanded” a trade last week – then got one. If Coleman – who dropped a bunch of passes in the segment shown by HBO when still a member of the Brownies – wants a little slice of revenge here then he’s got the opportunity with Buffalo this week naming AJ McCarron (7-of-10 passing for 116 yards in last week’s 28-23 home loss to 3-point underdog Carolina) as #1 on the depth charts ahead of rookie Josh Allen (Wyoming) and Nathan Peterman.

Current Line: Browns – 3.5 and 40.5 points

ARIZONA (1-0) at NEW ORLEANS (1-0) – 8 p.m. ET

The Saints know veteran QB Drew Brees has been a given over the years, but steps into the breach should Brees get injured? It looked as if Taysom Hill was the lock as the team’s second-string signal-caller (and he still might be) but last week’s 24-20 triumph at Jacksonville showed Hill takes too many sacks and doesn’t look to exploit the downfield throws as often as N’Orleans would like. Keep an eye here on long-time NFL backup Tom Savage who went 10-of-14 for 70 yards while playing all but one snap in the first half last week. On the flip side, there’s truly an “open competition” among wide receivers not named Larry Fitzgerald on this year’s Arizona roster – expect J.J. Nelson, rookie Christian Kirk (Texas A&M) and Chad Williams to see plenty of reps here.

Current Line: Saints – 3.5 and 41 points

There’s two (2) other games here on the NFL Preseason Week 2 docket for this Friday night:

The Kansas City Chiefs are at the 1-point underdog Atlanta Falcons while the Miami Dolphins are at the 3-point favorite Carolina Panthers.

Cash in with Jim Hurley’s Network with all of tonight’s NFL Preseason Week 2 tilts.

Gonna spend the next couple of weeks getting you quick-hitter comments from ‘round the NCAA Football universe and our conference-by-conference updates continue here with the Sun Belt Conference:

THE CONTENDERS – Arkansas State, Troy and Appalachian State are expected to be the real heavy-hitters here after each of ‘em went to bowls last season and keep in mind there’s a Sun Belt Conference Championship Game this year.

THE DARK HORSE – Louisiana. There’s a new boss in town in former Alabama assistant Billy Napier and he’s counting on a spread option offense that stars WR Ryheem Malone.

BEST PLAYER – Jalin Moore, RB, Appalachian State. Two-time conference rushing leader has 3,170 ground yards in his starry college career.

CIRCLE THE DATE – Nov. 24, Troy at Appalachian State. It’s probable that the Sun Belt’s East Division will be on the line here.

NOTE: More NFL Preseason Week 2 previews / goodies in the next edition of Jim Sez.
