The 2018 NFL Preseason officially kicks off Thursday night when the Baltimore Ravens take on the Chicago Bears in the annual Hall of Fame game in Canton Ohio. That marks the return of football to the airwaves and our betting portfolios. If you typically pass the Preseason waiting for the regular season to arrive…you should be aware of this one key fact…
ODDSMAKERS HATE THE NFL PRESEASON!
And, if oddsmakers hate the preseason, smart bettors should love it.
Why do oddsmakers hate the preseason?
*They don’t have the resources or time to track down the drive-by-drive quarterback plans for all 32 teams. Think about everything modern sports books are offering to their clients, even in the summer. Busy daily baseball schedules. Weekly golf odds and matchups (that might be the fastest growing betting sport!). The WNBA. World soccer. And, that’s not to mention all the advance football props available involving futures prices, Regular Season Win Totals, Games of the Year, and the like. Oddsmakers will tell you they know the quarterback rotations. When honest, they admit that the let early smart money tell dictate the line.
*If there’s not enough time to master the quarterbacks, imagine trying to know what’s going on at all the other positions! It’s just too much for “corporate” oddsmakers to even attempt these days.
*The public doesn’t bet that much compared to the regular season. So, it’s mostly “oddsmakers vs. sharps” in August except for a few prominent TV games here and there. Oddsmakers know they take a loss in that head-to-head. Oddsmakers know out of the gate that they’re less informed and out-gunned this month. That’s why limits are so much lower in the NFL Preseason than in the regular season.
Oddsmakers are much happier in September. Starting quarterbacks play the whole game unless there’s an injury. Teams play to their statistical norms…particularly veteran teams that can be counted on to play near the same level season after season. And, markets are flooded by “dumb” money that will back too many favorites even though the lines are stacked against chalk. That “dumb” money also loves to bet parlays, which fill the coffers of sports books to the delight of those in charge.
So, why would YOU want to pass the Preseason when the lines are at their most vulnerable to solid informational handicapping? Who cares if most of the gams are boring to watch? Do you want to bet for entertainment…or to make MONEY?!
JIM HURLEY says you should pounce on oddsmaker weakness to maximize your profit. That doesn’t mean betting every game. A lot of exhibition games are true coin flips that are properly priced. Pick the best spots. Bet the maximum that a responsible money management approach allows. You don’t want to risk digging an early hole. But, you don’t want to leave money on the table either.
NETWORK’S exclusive TEAM HANDICAPPING approach helps you bet smart.
*Our SCOUTS AND SOURCES let us know which quarterbacks will be playing when…and which potential impact players are making statements in early practices. That by itself is enough to beat the number in August. We do the work. You make the money.
*Our TREND HISTORIANS know which coaches emphasize which weeks of the Preseason, or which don’t emphasize any weeks at all. Often, success in exhibition betting involves knowing which coaches to bet AGAINST. While there’s no such thing as a lock in August…because some third stringer may return a punt for a TD in the fourth quarter…you will still win a lot more than you lose knowing coaching histories. With this information, many winners just pick themselves.
*Our WISE GUY CONNECTIONS have always alerted us to smart money developments in Las Vegas and offshore. Now that sports betting is legal in New Jersey, you can be certain we’ll be even closer to the flow of Wise Guy information (at least until sports books there ban all the Wise Guys!). Remember…it’s oddsmakers vs. sharps in August football. If you know what the sharps are betting, and the lines they’re attacking…you will become an instant sharp in terms of results.
We do de-emphasize the simulation software influences of our COMPUTER PROGRAMMERS because there’s only so much that can be simulated when third-teamers are playing a lot of minutes against each other. We make allowances for lower scoring totals and more conservative play-calling. In August…it’s INFORMATION, COACHING TRENDS, and SMART MONEY ACCESS that puts us in position to profit.
And, don’t forget that every dollar you win in August can multiply itself over several times between now and the Super Bowl. If you take the Preseason off…it doesn’t cost you a little. It could cost you a lot!
