NCAA TOURNAMENT - EAST REGIONAL SEMIFINALS
TD Garden - Boston, MA
#5 WEST VIRGINIA (26-10) vs. #1 VILLANOVA (32-4) - 7:27 p.m. ET, TBS
This once-upon-a-time Big East rivalry could wind up being a major rock-fight in Beantown: After all, Villanova has held its first two NCAA Tournament foes this year to a grand total of 119 points and 'Nova boss Jay Wright knows all too well that the key to West Virginia is don't let 'em score and then allow 'em to apply that fierce full-court press starring G Jevon Carter (28 points in last Sunday's runaway win against Marshall). Note that Villanova bombed in 31 treys in its earlier-round wins/covers versus Radford and Alabama and -- if G Jalen Brunson (19.1 ppg) is in a drive-and-dish mood and the 'Cats are hot from deep - then even "Press" Virginia may have its share of problems getting by here.
Here's the earlier-round NCAA Tournament games for West Virginia and Villanova:
|3-16||West Virginia||- 10||Murray St.||85-68|
|3-18||West Virginia||- 12.5||Marshall||94-71|
#3 TEXAS TECH (26-9) vs. #2 PURDUE (30-6) - approximately 9:57 p.m. ET, TBS
Down-and-dirty: That's what this showdown between T-Tech and Purdue should be as these blue-collar teams rely way more on inside strength than they do the more modern three-point game. Obviously, the Big 10 Boilermakers are without 7-foot-2 star Isaac Haas (broken elbow) here but Purdue coach Matt Painter isn't heaping too much on the bony shoulders of 7-foot-3 Matt Haarms as he favors a spread-the-wealth scene (although G Carsen Edwards and his 18.2 ppg average is a must here). BTW, the Red Raiders' Keenan Evans (17.8 ppg) and his past toe woes seem to be behind 'em. Is Evans good for a 15-point/10-assist type game here? Stay tuned.
Here's the earlier-round NCAA Tournament games for Texas Tech and Purdue:
|3-15||Texas Tech||- 11||S.F. Austin||70-60|
|3-17||Texas Tech||- 1||Florida||69-66|
NCAA TOURNAMENT - MIDWEST REGIONAL SEMIFINALS
CenturyLink Center - Omaha, NE
#5 CLEMSON (25-9) vs. #1 KANSAS (29-7) - 7:07 p.m. ET, CBS
If you hadn't noticed, there are/were a half-dozen Sweet 16 showdowns pitting power conference teams against one another but here's a case where the Kansas Jayhawks - always a contender for a national championship - are getting all the attention and all the ink ... but better believe Clemson is no team to fool with, folks! Brad Brownell's squad held Auburn to 25.8 percent shooting from the floor in last Sunday's blowout win and now the ACC Tigers will bring a lunch pail mentality for this clash against Kansas: If the Jayhawks get 30-or-so minutes from C Udoka Azubuike (see 10 points and 7 rebounds in 22 minutes of action in last Saturday's four-point win against Seton Hall) than knocking off this top seed will be tough. Call Clemson G Gabe DeVoe the key here for the 5-point underdogs - he's a go-getter capable of putting up some big shots when all around him is failing.
Here's the earlier-round NCAA Tournament games for Clemson and Kansas:
|3-16||Clemson||- 3.5||N.Mex. St.||79-68|
|3-17||Kansas||- 4.5||Seton Hall||83-79|
#11 SYRACUSE (23-13) vs. #2 DUKE (28-7) -approximately 9:37 p.m. ET, CBS
Here's the far-and-away biggest pointspread on the Sweet 16 board with the Dookies a rather bloated 11-point betting favorite against a Syracuse club that's a perfect 3-and-oh SU (straight-up) and ATS (against the spread) so far in this man's tourney. Okay, so everyone knows these clubs are no strangers to one another - they bucked heads on Feb. 24th when Duke (- 14) topped the 'Cuse 60-44 despite the fact Mike Krzyzewski's crew connected on only 2-of-18 trifectas. Marvin Bagley's 19 points powered the Duke attack in that first meeting; Syracuse was led by Tyus Battle's 12 points but it says here the Orange will be crushed unless lost-in-fog G Frank Howard (12-of-34 FG shooting in this tourney) gets a wake-up call!
Here's the earlier-round NCAA Tournament games for Syracuse and Duke:
|3-14||Syracuse||+ 1||Arizona St.||60-56|
|3-18||Syracuse||+ 10||Michigan St.||55-53|
|3-17||Duke||- 9.5||Rh. Isle||87-62|
