For years I've made my name in the sports betting industry calling for...and winning...upsets in major events. There are Cinderella stories in every sport. I was theman escorting Cinderella to the party in my limousine, and the drinks for everyone were on me.
Does that mean I'll be releasing Georgia (+) to my clients this coming Monday Night in the college football National Championship game against Alabama? Don't assume that's a sure thing!
*Last week I won big with Alabama (-) over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. That easy cover was never in doubt, as the Crimson Tide defense dominated form start to finish.
*Last week I went against Georgia with Oklahoma (+) in the Rose Bowl. That was a winner at the end of 60 minutes. Unfortunately, the tied game went extra time and I was unlucky to take a loss. I still believe Oklahoma was the right side in that head-to-head matchup. It took huge coaching mistakes to blow that big lead. It should be Oklahoma vs. Alabama this Monday.
But, WAYNE ALLYN ROOT isn't a man that holds grudges. In sports betting, you can be rooting for a team one week, then rooting against them the next week. I could well be on the Bulldogs Monday, even making an upset call.
In Georgia's favor:
*No pressure. They've made it to the big game and they're playing with house money. The future is as bright as can be under new head coach Kirby Smart. There is no "now or never" mentality with this up-and-coming program. It's a celebration.
*There's an "us against the world" mentality that led them to an SEC Championship win over Auburn, and last week's rally vs. Oklahoma. It's VITAL for underdogs to have this kind of mindset if you're going to invest in them. Particularly if you're going to call for an upset and bet them on the moneyline.
*Playing in its home state. It's not a true home game because it's in Atlanta, and Alabama has plenty of familiarity with this city from past SEC Championship games (though this dome is new). Georgia's program will do what it takes to make it feel like a home game.
*This team is capable of scoring points. Though, Alabama's defense is so great that the Bulldog might get shut down anyway. But, there are a slew of talented running backs and a quarterback who plays within himself. I always encourage readers to bet on dogs with good OFFENSES because you must score enough to win.
*A letdown for Alabama! The Tide spent all season dreaming about getting revenge on Clemson. They got it. Now they're facing a team they don't respect much because of recent SEC history. Nobody should ever be "flat" for a championship game. Alabama could definitely come in overconfident. That's what cost them last year's championship against Clemson.
You don't often have teams this great getting points. Georgia has already delivered as underdogs vs. Notre Dame and Auburn. There's a chance I might be on the Bulldogs.
On the other hand...
*Georgia is much more likely to have a hangover effect from last week because the win over Oklahoma took forever, was played on the other side of the country, and was an up-tempo yet physical affair. Alabama coasted past Clemson in what felt like about "half" a game in terms of true fatigue.
*Alabama's rush defense is great, which means the Georgia quarterback may be asked to do too much. Beating Oklahoma actually doesn't tell you much at all about the matchup with Alabama because OU's up front defense is so much softer.
*Kirby Smart is a former assistant of Nick Saban. Saban has a fantastic record against his former assistants! That's a tough trend to buck unless you have great reasons for it.
*Alabama doesn't want to be a runner-up two years in a row. You may have seen the video that went viral of an Alabama assistant coach smashing the runner-up trophy. The fact that Alabama took its eye off the ball a year ago means it's less likely to happen again.
I'll say it this way, Georgia could make much more sense a "value" bet in a defensive struggle than as an upset call. It's easier to make the case that Alabama -3.5 or -4 is too high rather than "the wrong team is favored." I'll be thinking long and hard all weekend about who I want to release here, and whether or not that release deserves true PINNACLE status. And, there's always a chance that the Over/Under is the place to make a stand rather than the team side.
