If you’ve been watching the betting markets this week, you know that the New England Patriots have been getting a lot of attention in this Sunday afternoon’s game in Mexico City against the Oakland Raiders. The general public has most of its influence over the weekend. So, you should know that much of that “disrespect” for the Raiders is coming from professional bettors.
Does anybody believe in the Raiders any more? Are they going to revert back to being a bad team just before they move to Las Vegas. THE KING OF LAS VEGS sure hopes not. But, as a contrarian bettor, you can be sure I’m looking long and hard at the underdog. And, if the line flies up over the seven this weekend from public betting, the Raiders might even be a big play.
Look, I’m under no illusions about who the superior team is here. New England is obviously the defending Super Bowl champions, and still one of the “Futures” favorites to win again this season. Oakland is in danger of not even making the playoffs with a 4-5 record. But, let’s look at what the Raiders have going for them.
*They’re coming off a bye week, while New England played last Sunday night at altitude in Denver.
*They’re going to have a lot of crowd support in Mexico City because the “Raiders” motif plays very well there…and the California teams get a lot of TV coverage in Mexico. If you’ve never travelled South of the Border during the football season, you need to know that two NFL doubleheaders are shown simultaneously on different sports networks. You can watch more life NFL in Mexico than you can in the US! It won’t be a “home field advantage” for the Raiders. But, they will be supported.
*They know they HAVE to play well to reach the playoffs from this 4-5 position. New England can afford to relax with a 7-2 record. Their biggest remaining regular season game will be at Pittsburgh. If the Pats win THAT game, they’d only the tie-breaker over the Steelers. They don’t have to win this week to get a #1 seed, as long as Kansas City suffers another blemish somewhere along the way.
*Derek Carr and this Oakland offense are well-suited to put up points against the soft New England defense. Yes, the Patriots are playing better now on that side of the ball than they were earlier this season. But, they’re still allowing a lot of yardage…and the Raiders know what to do with yardage.
Oakland is capable of winning this game outright if the Patriots wear down from fatigue or otherwise lose focus. Oakland is capable of covering in a close loss. The spread is getting so high now that Oakland is capable of coming through the back door in garbage time if they trail by 10-13 points in the fourth quarter.
So, why aren’t the Raiders a lock of the century? Hey, it’s still Tom Brady on the other side of the ball looking to pick apart the very shaky Oakland defense. New England’s going to score a lot of points unless field conditions get in the way (you never know at foreign sites…remember what a problem that was in England the first few years?). And, if New England’s recent defensive improvement is real, Brady could lead the Pats to a comfortable double-digit win.
You’ll have to be a paying customer to find out who WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is betting in this game, and the rest of the weekend slate in college and pro football. Maybe I’ll pass. It’s possible that this is just a “gut-check” game that you watch to see if it’s best to fade the Raiders the rest of the way. A lot of sharp bettors faded Oakland when they went to Buffalo, and cashed big when the Bills won 34-14. Buffalo hasn’t played a good game since and just benched their quarterback!
I know most of you reading this will be watching Patriots/Raiders Sunday, before settling in for Eagles/Cowboys and night and Falcons/Seahawks Monday. You can at least assume that I’ll have something special for you in one of the big TV games…and nothing’s more fun than watching yourself win big money.
