As you were reading all about the marquee matchups in your Sunday morning newspaper, you had to be thinking that WAYNE ALLYN ROOT must have had a fantastic day.

You were right!

My PINNACLE play on Auburn (+2) over Georgia won 40-17. And, it was 40-10 before Georgia scored a garbage time touchdown. I knew that Georgia could come in conservative and nervous as the #1 team in the Playoff Poll. Auburn took the game by the throat and own a laugher. I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting a 40-10 fourth quarter lead! But, I was confident Auburn would win the game…and I knew a blowout was possible because Georgia isn’t built to play from behind.

My INNER CIRCLE play on Miami (+3), though it inexplicably went higher during the day) was just as fun to watch on TV. The Hurricanes humiliated Notre Dame 41-8. So, that’s two WAYNE ROOT underdogs that led 41-10 and 41-8 in the fourth quarter! I loved that Miami’s turnover forcing defense was going to play in front of a raucous crowd. And, I knew that Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly had a history of mentally imploding in big games. Though, again…I wasn’t expecting the win to be this easy. Amazing how fading the right teams in the right situations can really blow up on the scoreboard.

My POWER PLAY was on Mississippi State (+14) over Alabama almost won outright. The Bulldogs were in control of their destiny with a straight up fourth quarter lead. They just didn’t quite have the defensive wherewithal to play four full quarters against such a physical opponent. An easy cover that was never in doubt, and almost a clean sweep of outright underdogs against the top three teams in the polls.

My MILLIONAIRE CLUB play was my only favorite of the day…Wisconsin (-12) over Iowa 38-14. It wouldn’t have been that close but Iowa scored on two defensive touchdowns! I knew the Hawkeyes would be flat after upsetting Ohio State. Wisconsin’s great defense held them to just 66 yards of total offense, only 1.3 yards-per-play, and 0 for 13 on third downs. In truth, it was a shutout…with Wisconsin owning the point of attack to the degree I expected. So far, that’s a 4-0 record on what would become a 4-0-1 Saturday.

My NO LIMIT play was on Colorado (+14) at home against USC. That was a push when the Trojans won 38-24. It would have cashed as well if Colorado hadn’t missed two field goals and lost the turnover battle by two. Can’t win’em all. But, no losses on the day. (Oh, and 8-1-1 the past two Saturdays!)

They don’t call it “BCS Chaos” any more because it’s not the BCS. But, the same reality is very much in play. The highest ranked teams struggle to perform under pressure when big red targets are sitting squarely on their backs. And, talented, motivated underdogs bring everything to the table to make headlines. Of course, if a talented dog does that one week, they have trouble the next week (which is what happened to Iowa). Basic fundamental underdog handicapping that works year after year because:

*The public loves betting favorites

*The public loves betting teams high up in the rankings

*Oddsmakers also overrate the win potential for college “powers”

*The math guys grade off of “old news” rather than the new reality

Sure, “on paper,” Georgia and Notre Dame are going to grade out…and they seem like juggernauts because they’ve blown out other teams and played a close game against each other. But, NOW, under pressure, their weaknesses become exposed as their strengths are neutralized by fired up opponents. And, Las Vegas doesn’t just miss the mark…they miss the mark by multiple touchdowns. (I’ve been telling you about this for at least a decade right here on these pages!)

The college schedule takes a bit of a breather this week in terms of contenders running into each other. That’s fine by me…I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to beat November football. (That includes the NFL, where Atlanta over Dallas, Minnesota over Washington, and Tampa Bay over the NY Jets highlighted another winning day!)
