NFL WEEK 6 IS UNDERWAY AND EAGLES DUMP PANTHERS 28-23 IN HIGH-INTENSITY TILT LAST NITE ...
THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPDATE: #2 CLEMSON, #8 WAZZAU LAYING MAJOR ROAD POINTS TONIGHT, PLUS IT'S A FRESH LOOK AT OUR TOP 10 ...
THE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS: WHO DO YOU LIKE IN ALCS, NLCS?
Hey, don't look now but the Philadelphia Eagles are threatening to run away with the NFC East:
Last night's wild 28-23 win at 3-point favorite Carolina pushed the Birds to a 5-1 SU (straight-up) mark and so now Philly's three wins ahead of both Washington / Dallas for top-of-the-heap honors in the division. Just who would have thought that the Eagles would beat down Panthers' QB Cam Newton - and pick 'em off three times to boot - and make life so miserable for Carolina!
Now, it's 11 full days off for the Eagles till they get to a Week 7 Monday Night Football clash against the 'Skins - the question will be then who's gonna slow down Philadelphia QB Carson Wentz (222 yards passing with 3 TDs last night) who is making himself into one of the top handful of signal-callers in this league ... we'll forgive him for not being so funny in the post-game show, alright?
Jim Hurley's Network of Handicappers and Bloggers are gonna pound out another big winning week/weekend on the gridiron and don't forget there's lots of Major-League Baseball Playoff winners too all week long when you check in with us here online or at 1-800-323-4453.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPDATE
No messin' around when it comes to this week's top 10 - two of the nation's elite teams are in action here on this Friday the 13th and here's the lowdown:
#2 CLEMSON (6-0, 4-0 ACC) at SYRACUSE (3-3, 1-1 ACC) - 7 p.m. ET, ESPN
Will it be starter Kelly Bryant or freshman backup Hunter Johnson getting the nod at quarterback for the Clemson Tigers tonight in upstate New York? Ahh, will it really matter! Dabo Swinney's squad is a bloated 22.5-point betting favorite for this clash but do take note the Tigers are just 7-11-1 ATS (against the spread) as twin-figure favorites the past two-plus seasons.
#8 WASHINGTON STATE (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12) at CALIFORNIA (3-3, 0-3 Pac-12) - 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
No doubt we could toss a whole bunch of numbers your way regarding this here-and-now Washington State squad: They are averaging a touch under 40 ppg and have a legit Heisman Trophy candidate in QB Luke Falk (2,000 yards passing with 19 TDs/2 INTs this season) but how about a shout-out to this Wazzau defense that's already piled up 21 quarterback sacks and now they go against a Cal club that yielded seven sacks a week ago in a painful 38-7 loss to Washington. This Pac-12 tilt could shed more light on a WSU Cougars crew that could be among the last four standing come playoff time this December. Right here the Coogs are 14.5-point betting favs and WSU's covered six of its last nine tilts when in a double-digit favorite.
Now, here's this week's version of the JIM SEZ TOP 10
1 - Alabama
2 - Clemson
3 - Georgia
4 - Penn State
5 - TCU
6 - Washington
7 - Wisconsin
8 - Washington State
9 - Auburn
10 - Miami
In other College Football News/Notes ...There's some neat under-the-radar games on this Saturday's sked including the following:
Virginia at North Carolina / 3:30 p.m. ET - The visiting Cavs are 4-1 SU (straight-up) and very likely headed to the school's first bowl game since 2011 and maybe it's time for the country to discover QB Kurt Benkert (1,431 yards passing with 13 TDs and 3 INTs) who is becoming BMOC (that's Big Man on Campus) real quick.
#25 Navy at Memphis / 3:45 p.m. ET, ESPNU - Navy's 5-and-oh and humming along and now the Midshipmen are showing a new look while operating the option attack occasionally out of the shotgun; Memphis remains a pass-heavy team that stars QB Riley Ferguson who aired seven TD passes in last Friday's 70-31 wipeout win at UConn. First team to 50 wins here?
Boise State at #19 San Diego State / 10:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network - There's talk heatin' up that the SDSU Aztecs could be the team this year that breaks on through and plays in one of those really big January bowl games (see Western Michigan last year in the Cotton Bowl).
THE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS
Okay, so the league championship series are finally set:
The American League Championship Series swings into action tonight - and the Houston Astros at - 170 are prohibitive favorites to best the New York Yankees. If the 'Stros can't dent this Yankee bullpen over the course of what figures to be a long series, then Joe Girardi's gang could pull another post-season upset. One major key: The Yankees must "dance around" Houston superstar middle infielders 2B Jos Altuve and SS Carlos Correa ... or else.
The National League Championship Series opens up on Saturday night with the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs challenging the favored Los Angeles Dodgers - maybe Game 1 looks like a "given" for LA with ace LHP Clayton Kershaw but we say that if the Cubs can steal this series opener, they'll put immediate heat on Davey Roberts' crew and then be tough to beat. One major key: The Dodgers must get competent bullpen help leading up to closer Kenley Jansen. If Chicago can expose LA's seventh- or eighth-inning guys here in this series, then the Chitowners will be tough to beat. Gut feeling is Cubs lefty stick 1B Anthony Rizzo is gonna have to get a couple of key late-game hits against lefty relievers.
