That sure happened fast! I was expecting Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans to have a good game this past Sunday as a home underdog against the Tennessee Titans. That’s why Houston (+) was an Inner Circle play in my ROOT TRUST (highlighting another winning weekend!). But, I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting him to play THAT well in what became a 57-14 straight up victory.
Watson isn’t just destined to be a high impact player in this league. The past two weeks prove he’s already there right now. A big game at New England in a near-upset was followed up by a dominating performance that saw his offense march up and down the field for TD after TD against an opponent many are picking to reach the playoffs. He’s picked up right where he left off after leading Clemson to a college football National Championship last season.
*He’s a threat with his arm. Don’t be trapped into thinking he’s “only” a running quarterback. Two weeks ago he was 22-33-292 at New England, followed by 25-34-272 this week. That’s excellent accuracy for a young quarterback. The only issue so far has been interceptions. He’s thrown three in the past two weeks. Normal for rookie quarterbacks. He’ll only see the field better as he gains more experience. He’s already posting big numbers through what was supposed to be a painful learning curve. Painful for opponents!
*He can run out of trouble and make plays with his legs. You probably saw that long TD run against Cincinnati. No NFL quarterback can last long with this as his only strength. That type of quarterback takes too many hits…and ultimately suffers the knee, ankle, or Achilles injury that reduces his speed. For now, that hasn’t happened yet…and defenses don’t know his tendencies. Running QB’s (like Colin Kaepernick) are most dangerous when they first get starting jobs. Watson isn’t one-dimensional…but can make the most of this particular dimension for the time being. Career length will depend on his ability to evolve into almost a purely pocket passer who only uses his legs in emergencies. For now…his unpredictability is going to scare every opposing defense.
*He’s a true leader! That’s what so many pro QB’s lack. They’ve always been “prospects” because of size and arm strength…but they lack the intangibles it takes to win ball games. That’s why Tom Savage fell by the wayside so quickly. Savage barely cracked the college headlines at Rutgers, even with his height. Watson carried Clemson on his back to two title tilts, one of which was a victory. You could see that leadership ability in his first preseason game…and it’s already the most dominant factor in his on-field performance. His teammates believe in him.
I will certainly be looking to back Houston as an underdog or small favorite until the market properly adjusts to Watson. He’s covered the last three weeks by 10, 11, and 45 points…and he may be getting better. Like opposing defenders, oddsmakers will be trying to chase him down from behind! Should Houston now be priced like a 9-7 type team? An 11-5 type team that’s going to be a threat in the playoffs? A 13-3 type team that will enter the playoffs as a market favorite? Don’t laugh…that’s on the table for a best-case scenario based on what we’ve seen so far. Houston hasn’t been “lucky” to compete against playoff caliber opponents. They just outgained New England 417-396 in Foxboro, and Tennessee 445-195 in Texas.
I hope you were with me this past weekend as my clients and I scored big again. Other winners were Carolina (+) outright at New England, the NY Jets (+) outright vs. Jacksonville (with a huge stat edge), Texas Tech (+) vs. Oklahoma State, Michigan State (-) vs. tired Iowa, and most also cashed with Wake Forest (+) over Florida State in a near upset (some stragglers settled for a push at +7, though +7.5 was widely available after release time). It’s been decades and oddsmakers still haven’t been able to chase down WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
