NFL WEEK 3 KICKS OFF THURSDAY IN CALI - IT'S RAMS VS. NINERS IN AN NFC WEST WAR
THE COLLEGE GRIDIRON UPDATE: THURSDAY NITE PREVIEW PLUS KEY SPREAD STATS FROM 'ROUND THE LAND, AND OUR FIRST EDITION OF THE JIM SEZ TOP 10
Here's the straight facts, Jack: The NFL Week 3 card features five divisional duels in all - and it all begins with the Thursday Night showdown in the NFC West between the Los Angeles Rams at the San Francisco 49ers - and so far NFL Divisional Betting Favorites hold a slim 5-4-1 ATS (against the spread) while Home Teams are 4-5-1 vig-wise thus far in said NFL divisional games.
Okay, not much to deduce there from those numbers but it is worth mentioning that so far these oft-maligned Thursday Night games have registered back-to-back outright upset wins for the road teams (see Kansas City over New England in Week 1, Houston over Cincinnati in Week 2) ... note that the home team is the pup here. We shall get to our Jim Sez quick-hitter preview of Rams-49ers in just a moment but first this important reminder:
The Jim Hurley Network is just starting to heat up this NFL and NCAA Football season and we'll have winners all this week long starting with Thursday's action - that's the Los Angeles Rams at the San Francisco 49ers in NFL Week 3 play and on the college side it's Temple at #21 USF. We have both College & NFL Totals plays tonight right here (went 4-0 last weekend in totals!)... and the whole upcoming college card is absolutely fantastic while featuring such tilts this Saturday as #4 Penn State at Iowa, Notre Dame at Michigan State and UCLA at Stanford. Get all of the Thursday-thru-Monday gridiron action right here online or via our toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453 on game days plus remember there's still lots of winning to do with our Major-League Baseball selections!
NFL WEEK 3
On Thursday Night, it's ...
LOS ANGELES RAMS (1-1) at SAN FRANCISCO (0-2) - 8:25 p.m. ET, NFL Network
It's a showdown of first-year head coaches in the Bay Area ... 31-year-old Rams boss Sean McVay has his "QB of the future" on board with second-year slinger Jared Goff (530 yards passing with 2 TDs and 1 INT so far in '17) while the 49ers figure to be in the mix at year's end for one of the prized jewels of the college game. Think UCLA's Josh Rosen or USC's Sam Darnold would look good in San Fran Niner colors?
The fact of the matter is the 49ers' offense - right here and right now - is a hurtin' bunch as SF has failed to score a touchdown this season while journeyman QB Brian Hoyer has thrown for a per-game average of just 146 yards. Does the "under" look way too inviting here? (See current totals price of 39.5 points).
Spread Stats - San Francisco is a crummy 6-12-1 ATS when placed in the underdog role since late in the 2015 campaign; meanwhile, the LA Rams have failed to cover six of their last eight head-to-head showdowns against the 49ers.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPDATE
On Thursday night, it's ...
TEMPLE (2-1) at #21 USF (3-0) - 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
The USF Bulls have grand designs this year ... like looking to win the American Athletic Conference title. Last year the Bulls had a similar goal but losing 46-30 at TD-underdog Temple scuttled those plans and so this is revenge time for the 19.5-point home betting favorites here and QB Quinton Flowers (four passing TDs and one rushing score in last Friday's 47-23 win/cover against Illinois).
Spread Stat - The USF Bulls are 11-4-1 against the odds in American Conference games since the start of 2015.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL KEY SPREAD STATS
Here's some key ATS numbers a few weeks into the current college campaign that have piqued our interest ...
Arizona State has skidded out of the starting gate with a rotten 0-3 ATS mark and the Sun Devils have yet to break the seal on their Pac-12 schedule (home to 15-point favorite Oregon this Saturday )
Clemson - The defending national champs are picture-perfect so far with a 3-0 ATS log following covers against Kent State, Auburn and Louisville but how about the fact the Tigers have won their first three games by a per-outing margin of 29 points. Last year Clemson won five games by 29+ points including that national semifinal 31-0 victory against Ohio State ...
Fresno State - Here's a good one: The Bulldogs actually have lost games by 31 and 32 points at Alabama and Washington, respectively, and still Jeff Tedford's crew has notched spread wins in all three of its games ...
Iowa State - Don't look now but the Cyclones are a perfect 3-and-oh vig-wise and so that makes this Big 12 team a heady 10-4 ATS under second-year head coach Matt Campbell ...
Missouri - Go figure: The woeful Tigers have been betting favorites for all three of their games so far (against Missouri State, South Carolina and Purdue) and yet they have not cashed a single play. Hey, Mizzou should be chalk sides again come Oct. 21 (Homecoming vs. Idaho) and possibly on Oct. 28 at UConn ...
Oklahoma State - If you go back to the middle of last year, you'll discover that the OSU Cowboys have covered eight of their last 10 overall games and that includes this year's spiffy 3-and-oh spread start. Folks, it's entirely possible that the Pokes will be favorites in all six of their regular-season road games ...
Wake Forest - No doubt that fourth-year head coach Dave Clawson is on our proverbial radar as a "rising star" and how about the fact his Demon Deacons will enter Saturday's tilt at 4.5-point underdog Appalachian State with a perfect 3-0 ATS mark. In fact, WF is a collective 11-3 vig-wise since the second game of the '16 season ... yowie!
JIM SEZ TOP 10
1 - Alabama
2 - Clemson
3 - Oklahoma
4 - Oklahoma State
5 - Penn State
6 - USC
7 - Washington
8 - Georgia
9 - Michigan
10 - Wisconsin
This Week's Team to Watch - Mississippi State is ranked #17 in the current Associated Press Top 25 poll but an upset win at Georgia this week on the heels of last weekend's win against LSU would catapult the Starkville gang right into our Top 10.
