MORE NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 QUICK-HITTER PREVIEWS/COMMENTS AHEAD PLUS PATS LIKELY LOSE WR EDELMAN FOR THE YEAR, WHILE KC'S WARE HUST TOO
PLUS COLLEGE FOOTBALL '17 IS HERE AND WE HAVE "ONE-LINERS" ON THE FIVE (5) GAMES
The 2017 NFL Regular Season is now less than two weeks away - but first things first: The two preseason games on Friday night turned into "worst nightmare" stuff for the visiting sides as New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (98 catches for 1,106 yards last year) was seen being carted out of Ford Field in Detroit with crutches in hand while Kansas City RB Spencer Ware (921 yards rushing last season) went down in Seattle to a non-contact knee injury. Gulp!
There's still some important NFL Preseason Week 3 games on this last weekend-in-August menu and so let's take a quickie dive into what we'll be watching:
On Saturday, it's ...
INDIANAPOLIS (0-2) at PITTSBURGH (2-0) - 7:30 p.m. ET
No sign of Colts' QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) but, hey, he's not the only key Indy player that's hurting these days as DL Johnathan Hankins, WR Donte Moncrief and rookie FS Malik Hooker all are suffering from their own shoulder woes and won't play here while eyes on Steelers' backup QB Landry Jones who will play for the first time this summer while dealing with an abdomen issue. Hey, Jones could be key this year if/when QB Ben Roethlisberger misses his usual couple of games.
Current Line: Steelers (- 6) and 40.5 points
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (0-2) at LOS ANGELES RAMS (2-0) - 8 p.m. ET, CBS
National TV audience gets to check out this LA-LA land production and so let's see if there is any "chemistry" between Rams QB Jared Goff and new WR Sammy Watkins (just two catches for eight yards against Oakland last week). The Bolts, meanwhile, want to see how classy CB Jason Verrett (knee) plays here - remember that Verrett was injured in Week 4 last year and so he may need to take some time shaking off the rust.
Current Line: Rams (- 2.5) and 41.5 points
The Jim Hurley Network plans on banging out more Side/Totals winners in the NFL Preseason Week 3 card all weekend long ... make sure you're all aboard and get the weekend's NCAA Football and Major-League Baseball right here online or via our toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453.
On Sunday, it's ...
SAN FRANCISCO (1-1) at MINNESOTA (1-1) - 8 p.m. ET, NBC
Don't forget this prime-timer is preceded by a Fox-TV twin-bill - that's Chicago at Tennessee at 1 p.m. ET and then Cincinnati at Washington at 4:30 p.m. ET - so it's a whole plateful of exhibition football but when you're checking out Niners-Vikes you want to see if this rather untested San Fran secondary (moved Jimmie Ward from CB-to-S) can handle some downfield tests as Minny WR Stefon Diggs is expected to be moved from the slot to a wide-out role.
Current Line: Vikings (- 4.5) and 42 points
THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT: HERE'S THE SATURDAY MENU
Who do you like to win it all this 2017 College Football Season ... Alabama, Ohio State, USC or maybe you like a dark horse such as non-Top 25 teams Notre Dame or Boise State?
Okay, that's a long way off but we have Five (5) season-opening games on the agenda for Saturday, August 26:
OREGON STATE at COLORADO STATE - 2:30 p.m. ET, CBSC
If Colo State slinger Nick Stevens gets heated up here, than the Rams could post a monster number on the scoreboard against this Pac-12 team that has defensive deficiencies galore.
PORTLAND STATE at BYU - 3 p.m. ET, ESPN
Hard to believe that last year's BYU bunch ranked 96th in the nation in passing offense - let's see if QB Tanner Mangum can energize this Coogs crew that was held below 28 points on six different occasions last year.
HAWAII at UMASS - 6 p.m. ET
The UMass Minutemen ended their 2016 campaign with a 46-40 loss-but-cover at Hawaii but now QB Andrew Ford (342 yards and 3 TDs in that game) wants payback and this is rare favorite role for UMass.
USF at SAN JOSE STATE - 7:30 p.m. ET, CSBC
Big-time price here as visiting South Florida Bulls are laying three TDs in head coach Charlie Strong's debut ... will San Jose State's veteran O-line (four senior starters) help the Spartans play keep-away?
RICE vs. STANFORD (at Sydney, Australia) - 10 p.m. ET, ESPN
Note that Stanford's failed to cover its on-the-board opener for the past five consecutive seasons.
