The NBA has been in the headlines a lot in recent days. Even though you can’t bet any games right now, I believe there’s a lesson to be learned by the mistakes so many teams are making. You can apply what you learn from today’s discussion to your sports betting year-round.
It always amazes me how a handful of sports franchises SHOW everyone how to win championships…but then all of their competitors try to chase them using the WRONG strategy. In terms of the NBA, that means:
*Golden State has created a modern offense that’s very difficult to guard, and a hustling defense that knows how to disrupt opponents. They’ve done this largely with very talented “role players” who are great at one or two particular things. (San Antonio has used the same approach for years)
*NBA opponents are trying to keep up with them by building “super-teams” that ask superstars to play together and share the ball.
Ridiculous! You don’t beat smart teams by paying huge salaries to guys who are just going to take turns shooting! Do you think Golden State’s afraid of any of these newly formed starting lineups from the past several days? The only team Golden State is afraid of is San Antonio, who used a very smart defense to shake them up in Game One of the Western Conference finals before Kawhi Leonard got hurt.
The team that ultimately takes down Golden State is going to do so by guarding all of their back cuts to make the shot clock run down on them. Opponents need defensive specialists…and rebounders…and then a well-designed offense that makes the Warriors work on both sides of the floor for a full 48 minutes. Anybody think acquiring Carmelo Anthony is going to help with that?
Whether you’re talking about the Golden State Warriors, or the New England Patriots, or the Houston Astros, the essence of elite play right now across the sports world is a mix of tactics and skill sets. Tom Brady wasn’t a high draft pick. The Warriors didn’t have a #1 overall pick as they were building champions. You know what they were doing. They were building stars by sticking the right players in the right part of the puzzle. Houston’s been building this complex roster for years.
So, as you handicap moving forward…whether it’s tonight’s baseball card, this fall’s football, or basketball soon after, look to invest in teams who exhibit:
*An us-against-the-world mentality
*Strong effort on offense and defense
*A spread out, diversified offensive attack that can score enough to win
Your best investments come when you can find teams like that in an underdog role. But, the market is now trending to where you can win with favorites. New England made a fortune for backers last season. Golden State and Cleveland just inflicted the worst NBA May on Nevada in history. The Astros are way up in betting units this season. The “sharps must fade the best teams for value” mentality has taken hold so hard that elite teams are creating free money against lines that are too cheap.
