After the games of Monday June 12, the New York Yankees sat atop the AL East standings with a record of 38-23. They had just taken two of three from the hated Boston Red Sox, with their two wins coming by a combined score of 17-1. Then, they swept the Baltimore Orioles by scores of 8-2, 16-3, and 14-3. That was a five-game winning streak where they won scoreboard 55-9!

When you’re crushing people like that…and 15 games over .500…it would seem that the sky was the limit. And, with a bunch of games against what was thought to be the weaker West division…well, the Yankees could come close to locking up a playoff spot by the All-Star Break.

Instead, disaster!

*The Yankees lost the last two games of their series in Anaheim against the Angels

*The Yankees got SWEPT in four games by the Oakland A’s

*The Yankees came home, and dropped two out of three to the Angels

*The Yankees dropped two of three to the Texas Rangers

*The Yankees won Monday against the lowly Chicago White Sox, before blowing a ninth inning lead late Tuesday

That’s 3-11 the last 14 games against what was supposed to be a manageable part of their schedule. The good news is that they’re still in the thick of a divisional race because the Boston Red Sox aren’t yet ready to run away with the division. The bad news is that the slump has been caused by across the board failures.

*The starting pitching had been playing with fire all season, and it caught up to them

*The bullpen is gagging leads

*The offense stopped launching home runs all over the place. Aaron Judge only has four homers during those 17 games, down from his prior pace. And, more than half of his outs are strikeouts…suggesting that opposing pitchers are starting to figure out how to handle him

The Yankees weren’t as good as they looked during the best of times. They’re not as bad as they’ve looked the past two weeks. But, my sources back in New York are reporting some concerning chemistry issues now that things have gone south. There’s not much confidence in the pitching staff, which can have a corrosive effect on a team when no heroes step up to carry the load. And, on offense, too many players became so home-run crazy that they’ve forgotten about building a sequential offense. You don’t get to face Baltimore’s rag-arms every week! Can you score vs. other pitchers, and in parks that don’t have short right field porches like Yankee Stadium.

I’ll continue to monitor this situation very closely. You longtime readers know that I was born in New York as a true S.O. B. (son of a butcher!). I still have deep roots in my old stomping ground (pun intended), which allows me to add winners to my coffers year-round in all the betting sports. For now, I’ll look for spots to fade the oft-over-priced Yankees. If I see signs that they’re about to turn things back around…I’ll change course before you can say Joe DiMaggio.

The Yankees have two more games in Chicago before heading to Houston to face the league leading Astros. That’s terrible timing if you’re a Yankees fan. But, the short dimensions at Minute Maid will at least give the Yankees bats a chance to find their home fun form again. After that, it’s back home to face Toronto and Milwaukee for three games apiece before the All-Star Break.

Maybe the break will do the Yankees some good. Hopefully the home run derby doesn’t ruin Judge’s swing!
