We’ve talked for weeks about how dominant the Golden State Warriors can be when the key stars are healthy and everything is clicking. Even though WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is widely known as THE KING OF UNDERDOGS, my clients and I have been on the Warriors as favorites in the first two games of the 2017 NBA Finals. We’ve also swept the totals!
Perfect Play: Golden State (-7) over Cleveland 113-91
Millionaire’s Club: Under 225 (wins by 21)
Perfect Play: Golden State (-9) over Cleveland 132-113
No Limit Club: Over 221 (wins by 24)
That’s not just 4-0 against the spread, but 4-0 with all four being double digit covers! Oddsmakers, and way too many professional bettors out-thought themselves in the first two games. They were impressed by how well Cleveland played in dominating the Eastern Conference (who wouldn’t be?) But they underplayed what Golden State is capable of when their stars are at 100% health AND they have an “us against the world” mentality.
You’ve heard me talk a lot about that over the years on these pages. Usually it’s an underdog that isn’t getting any respect. They channel that anger and resentment into peak performances to spring an upset. That “us against the world” mindset can be worth 10 points or more in certain circumstances. Here, we have possibly the best NBA team EVER (when you focus on ball movement and how the pieces all fit together so perfectly) that’s also bringing those emotional intangibles. You have to go back decades to find a team that “might” have a Power Rating this high in the betting marketplace…and Golden State’s playoff Power Rating has turned out to be too low anyway. They just keep covering spreads.
In Game One, that emotion showed up more on defense. In Game Two, there was more of a party atmosphere as the team just kept putting on a show. I timed that just right for two easy totals winners.
Is there a danger that the Warriors will lose that edge in Cleveland? As big a fan as I am of this team, I have to admit that’s a real possibility. You could already see Steph Curry getting sloppy with his passes in Game Two. He’d better re-focus quick or those turnovers are going to cost the team a chance to run the table 16-0. Also, they’ll be playing in front of a hostile crowd rather than a friendly crowd Wednesday and Friday. Cleveland is certainly capable of winning a game. And, that means covering a spread since Golden State is favored by about a bucket.
What will it take for WAYNE ALLYN ROOT to switch sides for a game (or two)?
*I’d have to be getting reports from my sources that Golden State is spending too much time celebrating and not enough time preparing for their road challenges.
*I’d have to get confirmation that the Cavs are finally going to try to slow things down instead of running with Golden State. It’s impossible to run with Golden State and get the best of it! Even if you have some great dunks or wide-open treys on your end, you’re going to give up more to the powerhouse opponent that specializes in fast-paced basketball. If it’s clear Cleveland is going to stay stubborn, I’ll be all over the Warriors.
*I’d have to hear about a new injury issue that had been hidden from the media. That doesn’t seem likely now. But, that kind of news could obviously be a difference-maker in terms of swinging one game toward Cleveland. Remember that the Warriors didn’t show any signs of weakness until the middle of last year’s series when a series of personnel issues started to take their toll.
If you’re only looking at pure basketball…or the combination of talent and intangibles that have helped the Warriors so far…then Wednesday’s line is WAY too low. Golden State’s recent form suggests a road price closer to 8-10. They’re playing that well (and have for weeks). Cleveland hasn’t shown yet that they can even play a home nailbiter against a team this good because the Cavs’ defense is so outmatched. But…Golden State could obviously stub its toe. It’s my job to make sure my clients are on the right side every time out.
I have until Wednesday to make up my mind for clients in the baskets. Between now and then, we’ll build some more bankroll in baseball. I’m the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the “Walk of Fame” here in Las Vegas. I always stay ahead of the oddsmakers. Sometimes, I’m miles ahead of the oddsmakers! You can be sure that if an oddsmaker ever gets a star, his will be way behind mine.
Will I stay miles ahead in this NBA Championship series? I sure plan to. It’s been easy money so far…and the general betting market has no idea how to deal with this particular matchup. Don’t guess on your own and hope for the best. It’s time for you to go to W.A.R. alongside WAYNE ALLYN ROOT!
