As big a fan as I am of the Golden State Warriors and how they play professional basketball, even WAYNE ALLYN ROOT isn’t ready to make the case that they’ll run the table for a perfect 16-0 record in the 2017 NBA Playoffs.
Stores in Las Vegas are putting up that prop. You can either bet the Warriors will do it…or that either the Warriors or Cavs will do it. Obviously Golden State has the best Power Rating in the league by a good bit right now. And, they’re already a double-digit favorite in Game One of the Western Finals against the Spurs (at least on the opening line as I’m writing this for you). But, 16-0?
Let’s assume they win their home games vs. the Spurs, and then very likely vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers in the finals. That’s 12 of the 16 wins. But, can they sweep four road games vs. elite competition? And, remember, they HAVE to sweep to win that prop bet. No margin for error!
Here’s why it’s unlikely.
*San Antonio and Cleveland are great at home in playoff mode
*San Antonio and Cleveland would be trailing 2-0 and 3-0 heading into those games
*Golden State is unlikely to avoid an off-shooting game every time out
*Golden State is unlikely to dodge a hot shooting game from their opponent every time out
*Backers can’t assume Golden State will stay perfectly healthy the whole way through
*Conspiracy theorists will point out that the TV networks sure don’t want any sweeps!
Frankly, I wouldn’t be shocked if Golden State lost a HOME game to either the Spurs or Cavs. Both are great road teams, with true fighters who can win anywhere. I still think the Warriors are very likely to win the trophy. I’ve been telling you that for weeks. The betting markets finally caught up to where I had them in my futures prices. But, Golden State doesn’t “need” to run the table to get the job done. I think they learned last year that worrying about making history is a distraction rather than an aid when it comes to claiming the crown.
THE KING OF UPSETS probably won’t be calling for any series upsets from this point forward…unless Cleveland impresses me so much in the Eastern Finals that I have to take a big price with them in the Finals. But, I can obviously make upset calls in individual games.
That would be most likely to happen in:
*A Game 3 spot for the Spurs if they start down 2-0 in the series
*A Game 3 spot for Cleveland’s opponent if they’re a home dog
*Any home dog spot for Cleveland vs. Golden State
We’ll have to let the rest of the playoffs play themselves out to see if any other possibilities arise. I will obviously be looking for great baseball underdogs on a nightly basis. (The Twins (+) over the White Sox keyed a winning Thursday in the bases for my clients and I.) Here are some general handicapping tips for what’s left in the NBA.
*Three-point shooting is going to loom very large the rest of the way because the surviving teams all know how important it is to make treys. Focus on “consistency” rather than occasional great performances. Houston was up-and-down, and it killed them vs. the Spurs. You want teams who are likely to make 10-14 treys every game.
*Pay close attention to how the remaining teams guard the arc. Do any get tired or discouraged and start allowing too many open looks? It’s amazing how much handicapping NBA playoffs games has changed in such a short amount of time. It used to be all about the bangers, or shooters who could create their own shots. Sorry Shaq and Kobe, it’s not like that any more!
*Rebounding is going to be very important because there are more missed three-pointers than ever before…as it’s a harder shot to make. It will take tenacity to win the category. Know who’s tenacious. If there is a big upset somewhere along the way…I can tell you right now that it’s going to be triggered by a dog hustling on the boards while a favorite has an off-night shooting.
