I made my daily round of several Las Vegas sports books this morning and found the betting gentry quite out of sorts for whatever the reason (long ago learned not to ask "why"). Grumpy, eyes starring blankly at nothingness, obviously pissed off, mad at the world bettors - everything negative. I wanted to pull the fire alarm and send these people running for the exit but the cops in Las Vegas really frown on frivolous activities.
Why am I saying this? Because no bettor should be in a sports book or anywhere placing wagers on a day all the vibes are negative. One cannot handicap with any special insight or efficiency when the mind is overwhelmed by negativity, be it because one just got up on the wrong side of the bed or impacted by losing the previous day or two.
Successful betting is based on two simple factors.
- A mind at peace with the world.
- A mind that is confident and aggressive.
So much for my adventure in the world of psychology, or is that phrenology? I Just remember: if you are in a bad mood, don't bet until your minds meets the two elements listed above.
BETTING ON A TRIPLE CROWN WINNER
Always Dreaming was an easy winner 2¾-length winner of the Kentucky Derby but can the $350,000 Keeneland yearling purchase win the sports coveted Triple Crown that has been won but 11 times since a maiden named Sir Barton got it done in 1919. The last Triple Crown winner was American Pharoah in 2015.
The list of horses that in the past few years won the first two jewels of the Triple Crown, made up of the 1¼-mile Kentucky Derby, the 1-3/16-mile Preakness State and the 1½-mile Belmont, reads like a "Who's Who" of Thoroughbred racing.
2014 - California Chrome
2008 - Big Brown
2004 - Smarty Jones
2003 - Funny Cide
2002 - War Emblem
1999 - Charismatic
1979 - Spectacular Bid
Winning all three of these races is no easy task since they are all taxing and are run within a 5-week period. It is of interest no one has won the English Triple Crown Nijinsky in 1970.
If you would like to bet on a possible Triple Crown winner this season, bookmakers say you can get +500 odds, or $500 for each $100 wagered, if you believe Always Dream will do it. If you believe there will be no TC winner you will have to lay -600, or $600 to win $100. The odds tell their own story - yes -+500, no -600.

VEGAS BOOKMAKERS TAKE BATH ON KENTUCKY DERBY AND OTHER NOTES
Always Dreaming ended up being the 9-2 favorite in the Kentucky Derby but the Las Vegas got buried on futures bets on the colt who opened at 200-1 in futures betting. Insiders got down early at big prices and William Hill admitted it lost $20,000 on a $100 futures bet.
The Middleweight championship match is set for September 16 in Las Vegas between Mexico's Saul "Canelo Alvarez and 's Kazakhstan's unbeaten Gennady (GGG) Golovkin. As popular as Alvarez through the western United States, Golovkin opened as the -160 favorite, with Alvarez as a +140 underdog. Alvarez, a national hero in Mexico, is 49-1-1 in 51 fights, with 34 knockouts. He is 27 years old. Golovkin is 37-0, with 33 knockouts, and has never been knocked out or knocked down in any amateur or professional bout. His knockout rate of 89.8% is the highest in the history of middleweight boxing.
--The Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies and New York Yankees are proving to be money machines for bettors. Those who have bet at the $100 level on the Yankees are up $1,110 for the season, while the figure for Baltimore is plus $1,090 and for Colorado plus $970.
--The surprising money burners in the majors are the San Francisco Giants (minus $1,320) and the Toronto Blue Jays (minus $1,020)
--If you like to bet baseball totals make a note of the fact Coors Field in Denver leads the majors in runs scored, averaging 11.92 per game. That compares with an average of 9.04 runs in other National League Parks. The home of the Green Monster in Boston is also a hitter's paradise, averaging 10.57 runs per game.
--If you are an "under" player make a note of the fact the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum belongs to the pitchers. A major league low of 8.27 runs per game are is scored there.
AND ALWAYS, THE HARD TO BELIEVE
It is understood by all bettors it is foolish to bet a lot to win a little. Maybe not always, the Westgate Super Book placed a $50,000 at -10,000 that the Golden State Warriors would beat the Utah Jazz in their best-of-7 series. He was right (4-0) and for risking that $50,000 he showed a profit of $500. Nuts!
