As I write this Friday morning Las Vegas time, we’re just hours away locally from the start of the West Coast Conference Tournament over at the Orleans Arena. Sure, a few minor tournaments have already started. And, the major conferences don’t really get going until next Tuesday and Wednesday. But, here in the sports betting capital of the world, March Madness arrives TONIGHT because there are tournament games in town.
The KING OF LAS VEGAS and the only man in the handicapping industry with a star on the “Walk of Fame” has some thoughts on handicapping tournament basketball I’d like to share with you.
*First, the ability for players to handle fatigue looms very large in conference tournaments in a way that just doesn’t come up much during the regular season. If you win today, can you be ready to play again tomorrow? Most elite teams will have to win three games in three days to win their tournaments. Some may have to win four games in four days. It’s one thing to be focused on a Wednesday night…and then show up again Saturday ready to play. In the tournaments, it’s about clearing hurdles every single day.
With that in mind, smart handicappers will look at roster depth, tempo, and the ability to score even as legs are getting tired. Regular season stats and computer ratings will have a tendency to mislead you during conference tournaments because the numbers were compiled when everyone was fresh. YOU have to anticipate how everyone will play when tired. (Or, how a tired team can cope when challenging a superior seed that had the prior day off).
*Second you want to isolate teams who have established that they can play well away from home. Almost all conference tournament games are played at neutral sites. Some have unique shooting backdrops. Some are played in NBA arenas that will feel much bigger to the players than what they’re used to. Teams who have already proven they can win anywhere will have an edge over those who need a boost from a boisterous home crowd or friendly officials (who like to play to boisterous home crowds!).
Before each tournament begins, review the road/neutral performance for all teams in the brackets. Be sure you also look at pointspread results. Teams who cover road games in the regular season have already shown that the market has underestimated them. Take advantage of that in March. The games have barely begun, but I can already assure you now that many of my upcoming selections will involve underdogs (with talent depth) who have established that they can play well away from home. You only have to find a few each day on these busy schedules to build your bankroll quickly.
*Finally today, I want to talk again about the importance of investing in teams with offenses that can score. The media loves touting “Defense Wins Championships” all through the month. There’s obviously some truth to that. But, most tournament games aren’t championships! They’re matchups that are likely going to be relatively tight most of the way until the more aggressive offensive team takes command in the final minutes. How do these teams win and cover?
By having scoring threats inside the paint and outside the arc
By earning trips to the line and making free throws
By hustling on the offensive board to extend possessions or get cheap put-backs
By having a go-to-guy who can get the job done when it has to be done
You are going to come across defensive-minded favorites over the next several days who have no idea what to do on offense late in a close game. These guys hang on for dear life and hope to catch a break. Think that’s going to cover a spread of -4 or higher? That’s not even going to win pick-em games enough for backers to cash their tickets.
