Things were going bad enough for the New York Knicks even before they made the wrong kind of headlines Wednesday Night. Sure, they lost (again) to the Los Angeles Clippers in a national TV game on ESPN. But, everybody was talking about what happened to Charles Oakley in the stands and in the tunnel.

You’ve probably read all about it already. James Dolan had his security team go after a legendary NBA enforcer and fan favorite with predictable results. Charles Oakley is the one guy nobody should mess with! The media has been all over it. And, they’re going to be all over it for awhile longer because…

*New York hosts the San Antonio Spurs this Sunday afternoon in a game that will be nationally televised by ABC (after the Knicks host Denver Friday night).

*New York visits the Oklahoma City Thunder Wednesday night in a game that will be nationally televised by ESPN. That’s the last Knicks game before the All-Star Break.

*New York visits the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first game after the All-Star Break on Thursday February 23 in a game that will air on TNT.

Before the season began…it was assumed that New York would be an important team in the league again. Newcomer Derrick Rose was saying that they’d be one of the super-teams! As a result, the TV networks stacked their schedules with Knicks games right around the All-Star Break. Get ready to see A LOT of replays of the Oakley confrontation between now and late February.

You longtime readers know I’m a native New Yorker. I was born as a true S.O.B. (son of a butcher!) in Mt. Vernon, NY. I follow the Knicks and all the New York area teams very closely even though I’ve lived out here in Las Vegas for many years now. My sources in the Big Apple are still great! I’m not surprised the Knicks have imploded.

*General Manager Phil Jackson has lost touch with the modern NBA game, making it difficult for any team he builds to be truly competitive.

*Carmelo Anthony is still a fantastic scorer (when he wants to be), but isn’t a team leader you can respect because he doesn’t always hustle on defense or on the boards. He’s just not going to carry a team to consistent greatness on his shoulders.

*Derrick Rose isn’t as good as his ego any more, which is a problem on a team where egos have to blend together. If you watch a lot of game footage, you’ve noticed that his pick-and-roll defense is among the worst in the league too.

*The owner is still James Dolan!

What’s getting lost in the shuffle about New York falling out of the playoff picture (22-32 after the loss to the Clips), is that the team is a disastrous 6-19 since Christmas! You may have watched that Xmas day loss to Boston. That loss started this 6-19 run. You have to be REALLY bad to go 6-19 during a midseason stretch when many opponents are inclined to take games off. It’s not like the franchise is tanking for draft position. They were supposed to be a playoff lock, but have played like a 20-62 caliber team for six weeks.

I have to give oddsmakers some credit. They’ve adjusted fairly quickly. New York is 11-14 ATS during that 6-19 straight up run. Still some value in fading the Knicks. But, it’s not necessarily a printing press. I have noticed though that the team stopped playing defense! That’s driving some recent Overs…and it might take the line awhile to get to the right place. New York is 1-4 ATS its last five games but 6-1 to the Over their last seven.

I’ll definitely be watching the side and total possibilities very closely through the rest of the month. Football is behind us (congrats to all of you who won with me in the Super Bowl!), but there are fortunes to be made in February and March basketball! Whether it’s in the NBA or college hoops…whether it’s with underdog upset calls, favorite blowouts, or terrific totals…WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is THE KING OF LAS VEGAS because he knows how to find winners!
