HERE ARE NEWS/NOTES FROM LAST NITE'S ACTION PLUS MORE KEY SATURDAY GAME PREVIEWS INCLUDING #1 ALABAMA VS. #20 USC
Three of your College Football Opening-Night double-digit underdog pointspread winners - Tulane, Oregon State and Appalachian State - made things real sticky last night for the respective likes of Wake Forest, Minnesota and #9 Tennessee - and then there was the make-or-miss outright win by 5-point underdog South Carolina over host Vanderbilt 13-10.
Now Carolina PK Elliott Fry can be BMOC (as in Big Man on Campus) for this holiday weekend and beyond after drilling a 55-yard FG moments after Vandy missed a 45-yarder.
Okay, so the story of the night was 22-point fav Tennessee surviving a 20-13 overtime win against gritty/gutty Appalachian State - didn't we tell you the other day here in a Jim Sez column that the Volunteers figured to be "overpriced" early in the season?
One other thing we wrote the other day is that the odds are some high-profile/highly-ranked team is indeed gonna go down in this so-called "Best College Football Kickoff Weekend Ever" and let's just say Tennessee avoided the early-season shocker - but what "name" team won't be able to do so this holiday weekend?

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKEND PREVIEWS
Here's some Saturday goodies to sink your teeth into and note we'll preview Sunday's showdown between #10 Notre Dame at Texas (on ABC) in tomorrow's jam-packed edition of Jim Sez, so don't dare miss out!
On Saturday late afternoon/evening, it's ...
#18 GEORGIA vs. #22 NORTH CAROLINA (at Atlanta/Georgia Dome) - 5:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Now that first-year Georgia Bulldogs boss-man Kirby Smart - the former defensive coordinator at Alabama -- has publicly tapped veteran Greyson Lambert over frosh phenom Jacob Eason for the starting assignment, you wonder how long that proverbial leash will be for the senior slinger who threw for just 1,959 yards and 12 TDs a year ago.
On the flip side, Carolina's gonna be "blue" if this defense that ranked a lowly 113th nationally against the run last year can't slow down Georgia RB Nick Chubb who claims he's good-to-go following knee woes a year ago. North Carolina QB Mitch Trubisky has paid his dues as a backup the past two years for the Heels - will he be the "real QB story" in Hot-lanta here?
Spread Notes - Georgia has covered six of its last nine games played against non-SEC foes while the UNC Tar Heels are just 12-19 ATS (against the spread) away since the start of the 2011 campaign.
#1 ALABAMA vs. #20 USC (at Arlington) - 8 p.m. ET, ABC
Hard to believe that these two college football legendary programs have not played one another in 31 years (see the 1985 Aloha Bowl!) but the Las Vegas oddmakers don't exactly think this one will be a classic ... the defending champion Crimson Tide (see four titles in the past seven years) have climbed up from a 10-point choice to being an 11.5-point fav at last check and no wonder thanks to this always-fierce defense that brings back a handful of sure-shot pros that allowed just 15.1 ppg last year. If Alabama ILB Reuben Foster jams up RB Ronald Jones II at the proverbial point of attack here, it could be a really long night for the Troy Boys who will be asking untested junior QB Max Browne to rescue 'em.
Spread Notes - Alabama's a dead-even but vig-losing 26-26 against the odds when placed in the favorite's role the past four years and that includes season-opening covers in three of the past four seasons. USC, meanwhile, failed to cover all three of its underdog appearances last year (versus Notre Dame, Oregon and Stanford).
#2 CLEMSON at AUBURN - 9 p.m. ET, ESPN
Again, so we wondered aloud in an earlier-week edition of Jim Sez ... are any of the nation's elite/top 10 teams gonna get beat right out of the proverbial starting gate? The Vegas odds say it's not gonna happen here - Clemson's a solid 7.5-point favorite - but if War Eagle is gonna pull this opening-week upset than the game plan is simple: Keep Clemson QB (and Heisman Trophy favorite or co-favorite) Deshaun Watson corralled to some degree and make sure the ground game can chew yards/clocks behind soph Kerryon Johnson and a band of newcomers.
Hey, how about this pointspread factoid? Clemson's covered all three of the head-to-head showdowns versus Auburn since the 2010 season.
Spread Notes - Clemson has failed to cover six of its last nine pointspread verdicts when in the role of road favorites while Auburn is a composite 7-16-1 ATS the past two years.
NOTE: Lots more holiday weekend College Football Reports plus more NFL goodies in the very next edition of Jim Sez - so don't miss out!
