For many years the rule of thumb in the NCAA Tournament was to expect some upsets in the first round…but then assume that “form” would hold after that. Unprepared or overconfident teams would get shocked out of the gate. After everyone had their feet on the ground…the best teams would beat the worst teams.

That’s still true to a degree. But, there are still usually some upsets to find in the Round of 32. In fact, it’s become increasingly rare for all four #1 seeds to survive the first weekend. At least one superpower gets shocked before the Sweet 16 through much of the new century. And, a few more highly regarded teams get exposed as pretenders when it comes to playoff style basketball.

The reasons for this are as follows:

*There’s more parity than they’re used to be, so elite seeds aren’t as far ahead of the field now as they were back when the TV explosion of this event first started.

*Elite seeds are often there because their head coaches are great recruiters rather than great tacticians.

*Weekend underdogs are often there because their head coaches are great tacticians who can win without NBA type talent.

Mix it all up…and the great tacticians are going to score some upsets. Many of the super-talents will still sneak through. But, upsets WILL happen in most seasons. You have to handicap the card with that mindset. The general public usually wants to take all the favorites. Their “strategy” is to figure out which favorites to bet the most on, and which to cut back on. YOU need to think more about finding great dog bets…some of whom might be worth betting on the moneyline because their upset potential is so strong.

Now, I’m not going to tell you which dogs WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is thinking about for the weekend. That’s not fair to my paying clients. I will tell you what I’m prioritizing as I make my selections.

This is always the first priority for me, as I’ve told you often in the past. You have to score points to win games. “Defensive dogs” lose heartbreakers. Teams who can outscore their opponents get victories. Yale is a good example of this from Thursday when they knocked off Baylor. The Bulldogs were an incredible 21 of 33 on two-point shots, and also did a good job of earning free throws. They weren’t supposed to score 79 points on Baylor! But, they did because they ran a smart offense and made the most of their opportunities. Can they do that again against Duke? I’ll let my paying clients know Saturday morning! Just remember to focus on offensive skill sets when considering all of this weekend’s dogs (many of whom were favorites in their first game).

You saw how important this was Thursday and Friday. Dogs have to keep their wits about you in the final minutes of a competitive game. Favorites who lack composure should be faded. Underdogs who have composure are good investments. Which underdogs will be patient and get good looks while avoiding turnovers? Which favorites will panic when they see their season getting away from them? The most painful thing for underdog bettors is to watch their teams cover for 37 minutes then fall apart and send their opponent to a free throw parade that costs them the bet.

It amazes me every year. But, many big name coaches who are leading very talented teams do whatever it takes to keep the opponent in the game! They slow things down. They call too many timeouts. They try to micromanage each possession rather than just letting the best players exploit their advantages. This makes it very easy for the opponent to hang around. If the opponent is shooting well, it makes it easy for that opponent to score the upset. Look at all 16 matchups this weekend with an eye on how coaching strategies will or won’t lead to a potential upset.

As I write this, we’ve just enjoyed a winning Thursday with my service, and we’re about to tip things off on a very busy Friday. I’ve already circled some great possibilities on the opening Saturday numbers. I’m confident Sunday will provide money-making opportunities as well.
