Spurs Open -130 Favorite To Beat Heat For NBA Championship…3.5-Point Favorite In 1st Game
I'll Open With A 50-Unit Side/Total Parlay Thursday Night
Soccer May Be Most Corrupt Sport Ever And I Would Not Bet It With Counterfeit Money
By Kelso Sturgeon
The betting public has made the San Antonio Spurs the solid -130 favorites to win the NBA championship, with the defending champion Miami Heat the underdog at +110. The first game of the best-of-seven series begins Thursday night in Texas with the Spurs a 3.5-point favorite, with a total of 198.5.
This is a rematch of last year’s championship round which was won 4-3 by Miami, giving the Heat its second straight title and is loaded with drama. The Spurs have been to the championship round five times and last year was the first time they lost but believe they should have won and been 5-0.
In last year’s game, San Antonio had it all wrapped up in game six but blew a five-point, 94-89, lead with 28 seconds to play and then lost in overtime. Miami won the final game95-88 for the title.
In handicapping the game, you should know:San Antonio’s superstar guard Tony Parker (16.7 points, 5.7 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game) is suffering from an ankle injury but is expected to play.
- The teams split their two games this season with San Antonio winning at home, 111-87, and with the Heat winning in Miami, 113-101.
- The Spurs really go after it when the reach the championship round. Other than losing the series 4-3 last season, in 2007 beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-1, in 2005 knocked out the Detroit Pistons 4-1, in 2003 took care of New Jersey 4-2 and knocked out the New York Knicks 4-1 in 1999.
- San Antonio is 74-26 Straight Up (SU), Miami is 66-31.
- San Antonio is 41-10 at home, Miami 40-9.
- San Antonio is 33-16 on road, Miami 26-22
- San Antonio is 54-46-0 against the spread (ATS), Miami 47-48-2.
- In the totals department, both have played to the over. The Spurs are 54-45-1 to the over while Miami is 55-42-0.
I closed out the divisional championship round with a nice 25-unit upset win by the Spurs over the Oklahoma City Thunder and will open the championship round with a 50-unit side/total parlay. All selections will be available on this site and toll free at 1-800-755-2255.
Professional Soccer Most Corrupt Sport - Millions Spent Fixing Games
The events of this past weekend confirmed what I have believed for years—that soccer is the most corrupt of all and that so many games are fixed it has less credibility than professional wrestling. The New York Times published a story that proves hundreds of soccer matches have been fixed in recent years, including many leading up to the World Cup played in South Africa in 2010.
The revelations in the story named names, revealed millions of dollars were spent by a company in Singapore to fix matches and that as many as 680 games were suspicious enough to merit an investigation—something that was seldom done because too many important soccer people were in on the deal. FIFA, the organization which controls soccer and the World Cup, says it is looking into things, but….
This certainly is going to be a cloud over the coming World Cup which opens June 12 in Brazil with Brazil (-325) hosting Croatia (+1215).
The World Cup is the biggest sports betting event in the universe, with billions of dollars changing hands in wagers. According to the Times story, the fixing was left in the hands of bought and sold referees but there was no doubt that Singapore was calling the shots.
Against this brief background, I would not bet a single match with counterfeit money. That’s my decision. You can make your own.
Meantime in London The Sunday Times reported a high-ranking FIFA executive from Qatar, Mohamed Bin Hammam, paid more than $5 million in bribes to land the 2022 World Cup for his country. The newspaper also alleges he headed the effort to get the World Cup to be held in Russia in 2018 but does not discuss the amount of money that changed hands in that successful endeavor.
It’s time for the world to take off the rose-colored glasses.
All any bettor wants to know is that the game is on the level. Once that is in doubt, the sport dies. Just ask the former band leaders in harness racing.
