Worst Super Bowl Ever Destroys Bettors
And Lines Pockets Of Vegas Bookmakers
Denver Bettors Can Get Enough Of Broncos
And Make Them 9-2 Favorites To Win Next Year
5-1 Last 6 NBA Plays…Another 25-Unit Winner Tonight
By Kelso Sturgeon
Please permit me to pause a moment and reflect on Sunday’s Super Bowl and offer a surprising peek into the future. First, without even a split-second hesitation Super Bowl XLVIII was not only the worst championship game in NFL history it was one of the worst played game of any genre of football I have ever witnessed.
Don’t misunderstand me. I took great delight in winning a 300-unit play on the underdog Seattle Seahawks (+2.5) who mangled the favored Denver Broncos, 43-8, in a game so ugly I thought for a moment I might be watching a rerun of Florida State’s 80-14 win over Idaho during this past college season.
The most shocking part of the game was the ineptness of Denver, which for reasons beyond a young child’s imagination was absolutely unprepared to play against a talented, quick, fast and brutally physical Seattle team that obviously came ready to play and to kick ass and take names. The Seahawks looked like the 15-3 team they were while Denver played as if it was 3-15, and not the 15-3 record it brought to the game.
I won the game in a big way but the analytical part of my football mind remain lost to account for the Denver performance, so will put the game to rest.
In the meantime, here are some interesting facts about the game.
--It was the most watched event in television history, with 111.5-million viewers, according to the Nielsen Ratings, edging out the then-record 111.3-million who watched the New York Giants beat New England two years ago.
--Sports books in Las Vegas handled a record $119,400,822 on the game, crushing the previous record set last year at $98,936,798.
--Sports books won a record $19,673,960 on the game, compared to $7,206,406 last year.
--Sports books win percentage (the hold) was 16.5%, the second highest figure in history.
In Las Vegas, bookmakers smiled all the way to the bank as the legions of Denver fans in Las Vegas were down and grumpy
Broncos Fans Can’t Get Enough, Make Them 9-2 Favorites To Win It All Next Year
I cannot speak for how the rest of the world reached to Seattle’s dominating victory over Denver but Las Vegas is overrun with Broncos lovers and they have already made them the 9-2 favorites to win next season’s Super Bowl.
When the Las Vegas Hotel Super Book posted the opening odds for Super Bowl XLIX (49)—a game that will be played February 1, 2015, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ, the Seahawks and the Broncos were 6-1 co-favorites to win it, with San Francisco opening as the third choice at 7-1 and New England in the fourth spot at 12-1.
But those numbers did not last long, because the Denver faithful stepped right up to the windows and made their beloved Broncos the 9-2 favorites to win it all, leaving Seattle and San Francisco at 6-1 and New England at 7-1.
Shades of those long-suffering Chicago Cubs fans who bet so much money in futures they take a 500- shot to win the World Series and end up with 10-1 odds.
