Pacers, Suns Big NBA Money Makers For Bettors
Standing A Combined 46-18-1 Against Spread
And That Means 72.0% Winners
Linemakers, College Basketball Bettors Missing
The Boat On 4 Outstanding Teams That Are 67-2 SU
And 42-16-2 ATS, Covering 72% Of Time
By Kelso Sturgeon
College and NBA basketball is shifting into high gear while many linemakers and bettors—obviously deeply rooted in history—appear to ignore reality in a sport where dramatic changes take place with each new season. If that were not the case, teams such as Arizona, Iowa State, Massachusetts, San Diego State and Wichita State, who are 67-2 straight up this season, would not be 46-16-2 against the spread.
Winning 97% of one’s games straight up (SU) and covering 72% of the time should attract the attention of bettors, but it seems the public still finds its comfort zone in wagering on traditional power-house teams such as Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, New Mexico and North Carolina—teams that are 50-17 SU and 28-33 (46.0%) ATS.
One does not need a match degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cal Poly or Rice to figure out 72% winners is better than 46% winners.
The situation is much the same in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers and the Phoenix Suns being the best friends of bettors. The Pacers—27-6 SU and 23-10 ATS and the Suns 20-12 SU and 23-8 ATS—have replaced teams such as the Celtics and the Lakers as teams on which bettors can count when the chips are down.
Indiana and Phoenix are a combined 47-18 SU and 46-18-1 ATS, also covering at a combined 73%.
Basketball certainly has many challenges for bettors, but it is obvious there are teams one can follow—at least at this moment in time—and cash a high percentage of their bets. All it takes is forgetting what happened even last year and betting teams for what they are right now.
Betting The NBA
--Charlotte expects forward Michael Kidd-Gilcrest, who is recovering from a broken left hand, to return in about a week. He averages 9.1 points per game and certainly will give the Bobcats a big boost offensively.
--The New Orleans Pelicans—at the Miami Heat tonight—went through weather hell in getting to Florida. New Orleans played at Indiana Saturday night and was stranded in Indianapolis until late last night. Will this be a case where the hazards of travel beat a team?
--Chicago hosts the Phoenix Suns, who have won their four of their last five on the road, and will be without forward Luol Deng (19.4 points and 6.87 rebounds per game), who was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a deal too complicated to explain here.
--The Los Angeles Lakers are 6-10 on the road this season and play 10 of their next 11 on road.
--Denver hosts Boston tonight and stands 8-1 in its last nine home games against the Celtics.
--Golden State, at Milwaukee tonight, is looking for its 10th consecutive victory and its 6th straight on the road against a Bucks team that is 2-10 in their last 12.
