That’s right, four of the top five college basketball teams in the country are featured in a Tuesday Night TV doubleheader set for the Chicago Bulls home court in the Windy City. ESPN will provide national coverage of one of the biggest November nights of college hoops EVER!
#1 Kentucky vs. #2 Michigan State at 7 p.m. ET
#4 Kansas vs. #5 Duke at 9:30 p.m. ET
Don’t worry #3 Louisville…you’ll get your shot at TV time later!
All four teams in action already have at least one game under their belts. Here are quick stat reviews of their most recent performances.
#1 Kentucky 93, Northern Kentucky 63
Field Goal Pct: N. Kentucky 33%, Kentucky 55%
Three-Pointers: N. Kentucky 9 of 35, Kentucky 7 of 22
Free Throws: N. Kentucky 12 of 15, Kentucky 26 of 38
Rebounds: N. Kentucky 23, Kentucky 52
You longtime readers know that we’re going to LOVE a boxscore like that. You see the fantastic defense that John Calipari always coaches. Amazing that he can always get newcomers defending with that level of intensity so quickly each season. You also see an offense that attacks the basket given the huge differential in free throw attempts. Rebounds? Kentucky owned the boards.
Nobody expects that level of dominance when the Wildcats step up in class. You can obviously see the skill sets on display. The volume of MISSED free throws may be something that matters down the stretch Tuesday.
# 2 Michigan State 98, McNeese State 56
Field Goal Pct: McNeese 27%, Michigan State 52%
Three-Pointers: McNeese 9/34, Michigan State 10/26
Free Throws: McNeese 7/11, Michigan State 4/5
Rebounds: McNeese 29, Michigan State 66
Extremely similar to what we just read with Kentucky. Substitute Coach Izzo’s name in the copy, and it’s the same story. The only real difference between these teams is that Kentucky has a lot more “one-and-done” guys. So, Michigan State is always more experienced. And, that may be an ace up their sleeve in this early season test tonight. Kentucky’s players are still getting to know each other.
#4 Duke 111, Davidson 77
Field Goal Pct: Davidson 42%, Duke 70%
Three-Pointers: Davidson 3/21, Duke 13/21
Free Throws: Davidson 22/25, Duke 22/32
Rebounds: Davidson 31, Duke 27
Unsurprisingly…the issues we have with Duke are even apparent when they win blowouts. The Blue Devils lost rebounding, and inflated the victory margin with a 30-point edge from behind the arc. It’s easier to hit treys on your home floor, and this was a home game. So…a 34-point win was mostly caused by treys…and the team will look mortal when the treys aren’t falling. That being said, Duke does often start the season very well because Coach K is a master or preparation. Many of his recent teams have peaked early before disappointing in market terms in March. Keep that in mind Tuesday Night.
#5 Kansas 80, Louisiana Monroe 63
Field Goal Pct: Monroe 43%, Kansas 54%
Three-Pointers: Monroe 3/10, Kansas 5/18
Free Throws: Monroe 18/29, Kansas 27/43
Rebounds: Monroe 27, Kansas 36
Andrew Wiggins is supposed to be the next Michael Jordan or LeBron James. The Jayhawks better remember to play TEAM ball or they’ll end up falling short against top competition. We like what we see there in pure shooting percentage. But, that’s a poor night from long range on your home floor. And, attacking the basket aggressively doesn’t help all that much if you’re going to miss 16 free throws. The least impressive of the four boxscores in context.
That sets the stage for a great night of college basketball. You’re seeing some of the best college basketball talent in the country…as well as many guys who are destined for NBA stardom. You’re seeing coaching legends who are still winning at a very high level. And it’s all capping off an amazing ROUND-THE-CLOCK session of WALL-TO-WALL BASKETBALL that will offer handicappers an opportunity to make a great early season score.
