Kelso:Ravens At Broncos Kicks Off NFL Season Thursday Night With 1st Of Three 50-Unit Plays This Wee
Submitted by Kelso Sturgeon on Monday, September 2, 2013 at 3:14 PM
I have had a dynamite weekend in college football and will kick off the National Football League Thursday night with a 50-unit play on the nationally-televised (NBC) showdown that finds the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens at the Denver Broncos in a true showdown game that was supposed to be played in Maryland but was moved because of a scheduling conflict with the Baltimore Orioles.
By the way, Las Vegas bookmakers said their biggest losing game of the day was the Northwestern at California contest, with 90% of the money on the Wildcats. Make of it what you will, and now back to the NFL.
The number has Denver favored by 8.5 points, down from the nine that was up Sunday, and this unexpected road game is certainly a negative for the Ravens who stand 35-7 straight up (SU) at home over the past five seasons with Coach John Harbaugh running the show. It certainly is no way for a defending champion to begin defense of its title.
But enough of this, because I really want to speak with you about joining my Best Bets Football Investment Club for the season for two basic reasons-(1) it wins and (2) at $199 for the entire college season it is the investment of the season.
Before getting into all the details of signing up, it is of note my Best Bets Club went 5-0 Saturday and Sunday, with all five games being blowouts and with my choices winning by an average of 31.6 points per game. It's real; it happened and it is just the beginning of what I believe will be my best football season.
Here is my commentary on each game, as posted with the release on the Internet.
Best Bets Football Investment Club 3-0 Saturday
Alabama (13-1) -20.5 over Virginia Tech (7-6)
Prediction: Alabama by 28-31
Results: Alabama 35, Virginia Tech 10
Comments: It is no secret two-time defending champion Alabama is loaded with talent and has one goal this season-to become the first team in NCAA history to win three consecutive national championships. In years past I would not even have considered laying 20.5 points against a team such as Virginia Tech but I watched the Hokies last season and was shocked to see they definitely had lost their mojo. They are outclassed at every position in this contest, have an injury list a mile long and my figures say they face the same fate Michigan faced when it opened last season against Alabama. In that one, the Crimson Tide was a 13.5-point favorite and crushed the Wolverines, 41-14. In that game, Alabama raced to a 35-0 halftime lead and there is no doubt in my mind the team could have scored 60 points had they kept the pedal to the metal. Now-the encore.
MARYLAND (4-8) -22 over Florida International (3-9)
Prediction: Maryland by 27-28
Results: Maryland 43, Florida International 10
Comments: Maryland and Coach Randy Edsall have a lot to prove and the Terrapins will never find a bettor spot to do it than this outing against a decimated FIU team that lost 30 seniors and 16 starters from last year's team, including 10 on the offensive side of the ball. The Golden Panthers also will be without their 1-2 running backs-one who just became ineligible and the other who was dismissed from the team last month. Edsall has been an absolute failure a Maryland and knows he needs a fast start to take off some of the heat. As noted there is no better chance to do that than this game.
WASHINGTON (7-6) -4 over Boise State (11-2)
Prediction: Washington by 7-10
Results: Washington 38, Boise State 6
Comments: Sometimes one just has to go with his gut and my gut tells me Washington, a much better team than most believe, will make a major statement with a big win in this spot.
Solid 2-0 Sunday
LOUISVILLE (11-2) -20.5 over Ohio (9-4)
Prediction: Louisville by 27-28
Results: Louisville 49, Ohio University 7
Comments: This is the best Louisville team in school history, even better than the one that undressed Florida, 33-23, as a 2-touchdown underdog in the Sugar Bowl last year, and has every single edge against a very respectable Ohio team. The Cardinals are a strong contender to win the national championship and are loaded with blue-chip skill players throughout the depth chart. Even though Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater gets all the hype it is the Cardinals defense that will make the difference in this one. They return 10-of-11 starters from last season and have the ability to put up lock-down numbers.
Colorado (1-11) +3 over Colorado State (4-8)
Prediction: Colorado by 3-4
Comments: Both teams are in major rebuilding modes and an in-depth analysis makes this game a dead-even affair, making taking the points almost an automatic. It also is of note Colorado has a real football coach in Mike McIntyre who arrived in Boulder this season after performing miracles in putting San Jose State football back on the map. His successor was a joke and all but buried this once-proud program. This one will go to the wire and my money says the Buffaloes will get the cash.
