The National Football League marches on towards the regular season and it's time for me to make my annual prediction as to which team I think will win the Super Bowl in February. Without hesitation I have penciled in the 7-1 Seattle Seahawks, a team that is about to reveal itself in "perfect storm" fashion.
The Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots are the 5-1 co-favorites to win the big one and they certainly have my respect, as do the 6-1 San Francisco 49ers and the 8-1 Green Bay Packers. The defending champion Baltimore Ravens are listed at 30-1 and may well surprise and it is my suggestion to take a pass on the 300-1 Jacksonville Jaguars and 200-1 Oakland Raiders.
Why Seattle and not, say, the Houston Texans at 14-1 for the Atlanta Falcons at 18-1?
Handicapping is to say the least an inexact science, but there is no question the Seahawks last season sent a quiet and much-overlooked message that they have arrived-and they are certain to be better this season.
As noted earlier, Seattle is in a "perfect storm" position to win it all. All the pieces are in place to go the distance.
Just in case you missed it Seattle closed out the 2012 season going undefeated at home, winning seven of its last eight regular season games and came within 30 seconds of getting to the National Conference championship game, losing at Atlanta, 30-28. Had they beaten the Falcons, they would have been one win away from the Super Bowl, with only the San Francisco 49ers standing in their way.
Lost on many is the fact the Seahawks and the 49ers split during the regular season, with the 49ers winning at home, 13-6, and then getting crushed in Seattle, 42-13. The NFC West battle will again be between these two-and the Seahawks will be much better this season than last.
Seahawks Have Everything It Takes
After analyzing the chances of each of the 32 NFL to win the Super Bowl, Seattle took over the top spot by an impressive margin on the basis of these things:
- Seattle has the biggest upside of any contending team.
- All 11 offensive starters from last year's 12-6 team are back.
- Nine of 11 defensive starters return.
- No team has the chemistry of the Seahawks.
- Quarterback Russell Wilson excelled as a rookie last season and will be much better in 2013.
- Running back Marshawn Lynch rushed for 1,590 yards last season and is set for his best year ever and he is backed by very talented players. For the record, Seattle had the third best running attack in the NFL last season, averaging 161.2 yards per game.
- Seattle has outstanding wide-receivers.
- Seattle has a lockdown defense, one that ranked first against the score in 2012, giving up 15.3 points per game, and fourth in overall defense, surrendering 306.1 points per outing. It will be even better this season.
It does not take a genius to see where the Seahawks are going. They are going to run a ball-control offense that has all the elements in place to hang on to the ball all day. That, coupled with what could emerge as the best defense in the NFL places Seattle in a dominating position.
A controlled offense that will be run by very talented players and a defense that can stop anybody and everybody is rare in the NFL world. The "perfect storm" reigns in Seattle in 2013-and I am betting on it.
8 Games Kickoff College Season Next Thursday
The countdown to the opening of the football season is on, with eight college games-including the nationally televised North Carolina at South Carolina (ESPN) and Mississippi at Vanderbilt (ESPN)-launching it all in just eight days. The National Football League joins the chase one week later as the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos kickoff the NFL season.
The opening games on Thursday night, August 29, offers a sample of what college fans can expect this season-a big-time expansion of nationally televised games. Seven of the eight games that night will be on TV sets across the land, with only the Akron at Central Florida game missing. All three Friday night games will be on TV.
To offer a look at the future into this football bettors paradise, there are 32 games from Saturday to Monday night and 27 of them will be on national television.
For the record I am going to kick off the college season Thursday night with a 50-unit play on a team that grades out as a blowout winner-and a dominating cover.
As nice as it is to look forward to all this, there is work to be done beforehand and it begins Saturday with my 100-Unit NFL Pre-Season Game of the Year. For the record, this will be just my second big-game (50 units and up) release of the exhibition season. I won the first one-a 50-unit release-this past Saturday as the New York Jets (-2.5) ran off and hid from the Jacksonville Jaguars, 37-13.
