The NCAA Tournament started with 68 teams, is now down to 12 and much of what bettors have witnessed thus far is that anything can and will happen. Number one seed Indiana, the 9-2 second choice to win it all, is out, having been destroyed by Syracuse (12-1). Wichita State (30-1) sent Gonzaga (12-1) packing last week and 15th-seeded and quite unheralded Florida Gulf Coast (100-1) has every opponent nervous after knocking off #2 Georgetown and #7 San Diego State.
Heading into tonight's two remaining regional semifinals, who could have guessed a team as talented as Indiana (29-7) would play its worst game of its season in getting buried by Syracuse, a 5-point underdog? What can one say about Miami (29-7) that as a 5.5-point favorite over Marquette looked almost clownish in losing, 71-61?
The two remaining number one seeds in their regional bracket-Kansas (31-5) is a mere 2-point favorite over #4 Michigan (28-7) and Louisville, the 3-1 favorite to win it all, is 10-point choice over an under-rated 12th-seeded Oregon (28-8) team.
As chaotic as it might appear to some, I am thankful-very thankful-that I continue to win and put two more in the book last night, taking down the money with a 50-unit play on 9th-seeded Wichita State (-4.5) with its dominating 72-58 victory over La Salle and a 10-unit move on Ohio State (+3.5) with its cover in a last second 3-point loss, 73-70, to Ohio State.
For the record, here is what I had to say about both those games when I released them on this website.
NCAA West Regional Semifinals
#9th Seeded Wichita State (28-8) -4.5 over 13th Seeded La Salle (24-9)
Prediction: Wichita State by 9-10
Comments: I have the greatest of respect for both these teams and, contrary to what the media says, neither is a "Johnny-Come-Lately" to big-time college basketball. Both have outstanding programs and prove it year after year. With that said, at this point of the NCAA Tournament, every game is a coach&'s game and Wichita State's Gregg Marshall is an absolute genius in developing game plans that neutralize the strengths of his opponents, as he proved in upsetting 6th-seeded Pittsburgh, 73-55, and top-seeded Gonzaga, 76-70, in the Shockers&' first two NCAA contests. Wichita State, a completely unselfish team that plays together with precision, may well be the most relentless team in college basketball and because of it puts so much pressure on its opponents they eventually blink and give it up. These edges should be enough to get it done.
NCAA West Regional Semifinals
8th Seeded Arizona (27-7) +3.5 over 2nd Seeded Ohio State (28-7)
Prediction: Arizona by 4-5
Comments: This game is a dead-even contest between two talented teams but Arizona has three specific edges that should put the Wildcats in the winner's circle. (1) Arizona is a much better defensive team, (2) the Wildcats have the ability to control the pace of the game and (3) they are playing close to home and will have the fans behind them. The +3.5 we're getting on the team with the edges makes the choice almost automatic
And the winning continues tonight.
