Las Vegas bookmakers gave a big sigh of relief when 9th-seeded Wichita State knocked off top-seeded Gonzaga, 76-70, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The books were loaded with money on Gonzaga to win the national championship-some of it at odds as high as 60-1-and with the Bulldogs out of the Big Dance they were rid of one of their potential liabilities.
And, then, from nowhere, came Florida Gulf Coast, a complete unknown in the world of college basketball that only became eligible last season to even participate in the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles from Fort Myers were held in such little regard the Las Vegas Hotel Sports Book made them 1000-1 to win the South Regional.
Needless to say Las Vegas Hotel bookmaker Jay Kornegay is thankful he only had one taker at the 1000-1 odds with that individual buying a $10 ticket. Florida Gulf Coast is now 100-1 but continues to cause a real uproar among Vegas betting shops who can't seem to slow down the money line action on this NCAA newcomer.
Few paid any attention to FGCU in its first NCAA Tournament game ever and bookmakers cleaned up when it knocked off 2nd-seeded Georgetown, 78-68, in a contest in which 90% of the money was on the Hoyas. The sharps and the general public liked what they saw and completely surprised the books by jumping all over the money line (+300) on FGCU in its 3rd-round game against 7th-seeded San Diego State. Florida Gulf Coast won that one, 81-71, and the books took their first big hit of the tournament.
Florida Gulf Coast was a 13.5-point underdog to Georgetown and a 7.5-point 'dog to San Diego State-and is a 13-point 'dog to 3rd-seeded Florida Friday night. The money line on the Eagles in this one is +700, which means bettors collect $7 for each $1 wagered, or $700 for each $100 bet, and the sports books are already loaded with money on the underdog.
What has bookmakers nervous is the fact the wiseguys and the insiders have joined the general public in placing money line wagers on Florida Gulf Coast. Bookies casually dismiss the public wagers in a situation such as this, figuring they are just taking a romantic shot with a Cinderella team. Wiseguy play is quite another matter-something taken seriously, very seriously.
It goes without saying the gentlemen on the other side of the counter will be pulling for Florida Friday night. To them, it is enough of this nonsense-but is it?
