My 1,000-unit five-day Super Bowl Package gets underway tonight with my 200-unit College Basketball Game of the Year and the only surprise - to me at least - is the team I am releasing turned up the underdog while my figures say it should win in borderline blowout fashion. Strange, very strange sometimes - this world of basketball handicapping.
Meantime the San Francisco 49ers (13-4-1) remain a solid 4-point favorite over the Baltimore Ravens (13-6) in Sunday's Super Bowl. There are a limited number of books who have the number at -3 ½ but one must shop around for them. The total remains 47 ½, with a few 47's out there.
While for bettors most of the focus is on the picking the winning side, and then the total, it is of note some sports books in Las Vegas are offering as many as 300 proposition bets on the game. Even more interesting is the fact bettors are demanding more prop bets on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Jimmy Vaccaro, spokesman for the odds-makers at William Hill, told the Las Vegas Sun the interest in Kaepernick exceeds anything he has seen in his more than 35 years as a major fixture on the Vegas betting scene. He noted William Hill opened 10 proposition bets on the 49ers quarterback but the public literally asked for more and, now, there are 23 such wagering opportunities.
The Las Vegas Hotel, famous for its proposition bets, now offers 41 on Kaepernick.
There is no doubt Kaepernick will be the most bet-on quarterback in Super Bowl history, replacing both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady at the top of that list, Vaccaro said. It should be of interest to bettors bookmakers are in a get-even mode against the San Francisco signal-caller.
Beware - It's Get-Even Time For Bookmakers
In the National Football Conference championship game in which the 49ers beat the Green Bay Packers, 45-31, the books took several hundred thousand dollars in proposition bets on Kaepernick and got buried. Most bookmakers say he was most-bet quarterback ever in the world of proposition bets in a conference title game.
The bettors were all over Kaepernick in that game and solidly hit the books' bottom lines in three places.
The books put up over/under numbers of 219.5 yards for which he would pass. The public took the over and won when he passed for 263 yards.
The books also offered and over/under on the number 1.5 on the number of his touchdown passes, and he threw two. Chalk up another one for the public.
The books offered the over/under of 140.5 on Kaepernick's rushing yards and he ran for 181. Bingo, again.
As noted earlier, the bookmakers intend to get even this time. Beware!
200-Unit College Game Of Year Wins Tonight
It is somewhat ironic my 200-unit College Basketball Game of the Year is set to win tonight - just five days before the Super Bowl - but I never schedule these things in advance. They arrive when they arrive and when they do, it is send-it-in time. Tonight is send it in time.
