The reality of college basketball is there is no team deserving of the #1 spot in the national polls and next week additional proof of that will be the third different team to hold that ranking over the past three weeks. The college universe is loaded with some very good teams, but no dominating ones and that fact is supported on almost every single night when the mighty fall, mostly on the road but not infrequently at home.

Last night #1 Duke took a 16-1 record to 25th-ranked Miami and was destroyed, mauled, embarrassed, or whatever description one wants to use, 90-63 Hurricanes team - a result which went into the record book as the third-worst defeat in history for a #1-ranked team.

How bad was it? Duke hit 30% from the field (22-of-74), 17% of its 3-pointers (4-of-23), was down 42-19 at the half, at one point went more than eight minutes without a field goal and in one stretch was out-scored 25-1 by a Miami team that was beating the top-ranked team in the country for the first time in school history.

It goes without saying Miami played a game it will not repeat this season, hitting 57% of its field goals (33-of-58) and 47% of its 3's (9-of-19), but Duke has been in this spot many times in the past and at least made a game of it. For the Blue Devils there was nothing there - absolutely nothing - and there is no doubt in my mind Miami would have had a tougher time against Grambling State (0-16), Kennesaw State (2-17) or Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-13).

That is calling them the way I see them and this was just one of the big upsets last night. Twelfth-ranked Minnesota, an 8-point favorite at Northwestern, was knocked off, 55-48, and #17 Creighton, a 10-point favorite at Drake, lost, 74-69. Reality continued.

I had a good night in basketball last night after coming to grips with what was happening in college basketball - going 2-1 for my Best Bets Basketball Investment Club, winning another 25-unit Chairman's Club play with the Memphis Grizzlies over the Los Angeles Lakers and, most of all, taking down the money with another 100-unit college blowout win with San Diego State (-4) which scored a 21-point, 78-57, road win at Nevada.

That win was especially satisfying, since the wiseguys and insiders bet out on Nevada, driving the number down, first from San Diego State -6 to -5 ½, to -5, to -4 ½ before backing off at -4.

The San Diego State win means I am 10-1-1 in 100-unit college plays this season, all of which have been played in the last seven weeks. That is a rather remarkable win percentage of 91.0% but should be expected because all 12 of the aforementioned games graded out with at least a 90% chance to cover.

Next 100-Unit College Game Wins Saturday
I am coming right back Saturday with another 100-unit college play but first let me share some insight into what went into the San Diego State win. Here is exactly what my write-up of the game said as I released it on the Internet.

Mid-Week College Blowout
100 Units: San Diego State (14-4) -4 over NEVADA (10-7)
Prediction; San Diego State by 14-15
Played at Lawlor Events Center (11,536) in Reno, Nevada
Starting Time: 10:05
TV: CBS College Network
Results: San Diego State 70, Nevada 53 (W)
Comments: San Diego State has surprisingly lost its last two games - this past Saturday at Wyoming (15-2), 58-45, in a game in which it hit but 28.8% of its field goals and three days before that at home to UNLV (15-4), 82-75. This is absolutely uncharacteristic of one of the most talented, best-coached teams in the country and I do believe the Aztecs will bounce back tonight and bury a mediocre Nevada team that built up its record early in the season with a cream-puff schedule but which comes into this 1-3 in its last four games, all against legitimate teams. The talent level between these teams is so dramatic this one should never be close.

Winning is never an accident with me. There is a reason for every single release, whether it be a 10-unit play or a 100-unit game.

Bookmakers Getting One-Way Action On Super Bowl

I will cover the Super Bowl in more detail over the next few days but it is interesting Las Vegas bookmakers say they are getting one-way action on the game, and most of it is on the underdog Baltimore Ravens. As of Tuesday afternoon, San Francisco was the -3 ½-point favorite, with a total of 49.

The game opened with the 49ers -5 or -4 ½, depending on where one wagered, and the sharps jumped right in and book the points, forcing a drop to -4, a number that stood up for three days.

We are observing with a watchful eye, trying figure out where the wiseguys are going. Meantime, bookmakers are very nervous.
