The Army-Navy game is a great college football tradition that’s worth supporting even when the teams aren’t very good. The athletes are heroes. The history and tradition on display whenever Army and Navy take the field against each other is something to behold. Sports bettors will be trying to pick a winner in Saturday’s rivalry renewal even though neither team has been very good against Las Vegas expectations this season.
Army: 3-8 against the spread
Navy: 4-7 against the spread
In fact, it’s been a down year for all three military schools. Air Force is 3-9 against the spread this year (having failed to cover vs. both Army and Navy). That leads us to:
*Army, Navy, and Air Force are 10-26 against the spread!
*Army, Navy, and Air Force are 8-24 against the spread when not playing each other!
*Army and Navy are 5-15 against the spread when not playing Air Force!
Whoever you decide to root for in the Army-Navy game…you’ll be asking them to buck a trend that’s had them significantly overrated by oddsmakers this year.
If you’re looking for intangibles, it’s worth noting that THIS is Army’s bowl game. At only 2-9 straight up, they’ve failed to qualify for a bowl.
*Navy (7-4) will face Arizona State in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 29 (no line yet)
*Air Force (6-6) will face Rice in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 29 (currently favored by 1)
’12 HIGHLIGHTS FOR ARMY
Stunning Air Force 41-21 for a shot at the Commander-in-Chief Trophy
Upsetting Boston College
Losing by only 1 to highly regarded mid major Northern Illinois
If the Cadets can play at that level here, they’re certainly capable of pulling off an upset as an underdog of 6.5 points. They were sky high for Air Force. They’ll be similarly motivated here. That being said…Army also lost badly to Stony Brook, Eastern Michigan, and dropped decisions of more than 30 points to Temple and San Diego State. STONY BROOK!
’12 HIGHLIGHTS FOR NAVY
Upset Air Force 28-21 in overtime as a 9-point road underdog
Beat Indiana 31-30 to score a win over a Big Ten team (though it wasn’t a cover at -2.5)
Routed East Carolina 56-28 as a 3-point underdog
Navy has seven wins because they played a soft schedule this year. They are likely to be a sizable underdog vs. Arizona State in their bowl game unless they post a big result vs. Army Saturday in Philadelphia.
