The National Football League and I are ready to begin the pro season tonight as the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers host the previous year's world champion New Orleans Saints. Green Bay is a 4 ½-point favorite in this nationally televised (NBC) prime-time game and I intend to again take down the money with a 50-unit bet.

No, it will not be as impressive a win as Mississippi State (-31) scored over Memphis, 59-14, in my 100-unit College Kickoff Blowout Game of the Year one week ago, but the figures say I should get the cash and the cover in a game that figures to become a three-hour chess match following the opening kickoff.

The challenges in this game are many. First of all, there is little dispute Green Bay is the best team in the NFL and may step up its chances to get even better if it as rumored runs a bit of the run-and-shoot, an offense that has seldom been used in the NFL. Green Bay has the blue-chip personnel to do and that would certainly be a factor that would keep the Saints from changing defenses with new specialty personnel.

This is not to suggest New Orleans will be anybody's pushover. Au contraire. The Saints have made several changes from last year's 11-5 team, all of them to improve their running game and to add more team speed to the equation. That means superstar quarterback Drew Brees will be getting plenty of residual support as he throws to the deepest set of receivers in the NFL.

This chess match will be is won by the defense which does a better job of keeping the opposing offense off the field. Needless to say, the Packers also have a great offensive superstar in quarterback Aaron Rodgers and when he gets into rhythm he is deadly.

Both Teams Strong Openers

The past does not have much to do with the present in the NFL or college football but for those interested in history, these teams have met four times in the past 10 years and New Orleans went 3-1 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in those games. They last met in New Orleans in 2008 and the Saints won, 51-29, in a game that left the gate as a pick'em.

Both these teams have started quickly and powerfully in their respective rolls over the past two seasons. In that time frame, Green Bay is 13-3 SU and 10-5-1 ATS in its last 16 home games. New Orleans is 14-4 SU and 8-10 ATS on the road in that time frame.

Green Bay has gone 4-0 straight up and ATS in its last four season-openers while New Orleans has gone 4-1 and 3-1-1 in those categories in its last five openers.

An in-depth study of the analytical data for this game indicates it will live up to its hype, but hidden beneath everything are three factors that will decide the pointspread outcome and I am confident I am in possession of them.

The weather in Green Bay tonight will be as good as it gets for football-game-time temperatures in the mid-50s and with winds of 6-8 miles out of the northeast.
