Cokin’s Corner, Thursday 12/8/16

Another day at the Winter Meetings, and another blockbuster deal. Baseball fans have to be loving the action taking place off the field. The Red Sox/White Sox swap featuring Chris Sale will end up being the headliner of the week. But there was nothing under the radar about the Wednesday trade between the Nationals and those very busy White Sox. The White Sox have transformed their organization in the space of roughly 24 hours with these two big deals. The farm system, which was not good at all, is suddenly the picture of good health.

They’re pretty likely to be close…

WILL UCLA BASKETBALL GO THE DISTANCE?

UCLA basketball came into the season on a downward trend under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Steve Alford. After starting his tenure in Westwood with a 26-8 season followed by a Sweet 16 trip, Alford regressed to 20-13 the following year. Fortunate bracket breaks in the NCAA Tournament allowed him to get to the Sweet 16 again and cover it up, but there was no covering up last year’s 15-17 debacle. Alford followed the modern method of rebuilding a program—he got himself a couple of dynamic freshmen and suddenly UCLA looks like the real deal again.

NFL Juggernauts and Fading Has Beens

by Jim Feist

NFL parity is alive and well in 2016!  The Vikings were the only undefeated team at 5-0 in October....then lost four in a row along with their offensive coordinator. The Eagles and their rookie quarterback were the talk of the NFL, starting 3-0 SU/ATS in September...followed by a 1-4 SU/ATS skid, losing twice as chalk t the delight of money-line underdog bettors.  Even the 49ers looked like world beaters opening night a 28-0 win as a home dog...before a 0-8/1-7 ATS run brought them quickly back to earth.   Every team has flaws that can be exploited. The Broncos…

THE REPEAT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP CHANCES OF VILLANOVA BASKETBALL

Villanova basketball has picked up this season right where they left off in Houston last April. The defending national champs have opened with eight consecutive wins, are ranked #2 in the country and have a high-profile non-conference game coming up Saturday against Notre Dame (Noon ET, CBS). The Wildcats are a 12-1 shot to do what no one has done in a decade and its repeat as NCAA Tournament champs. Can they do it?

In this age of early NBA entries, Villanova is unusual in one respect and it’s that they have three seniors in the starting lineup. Normally…

WHICH WAY WILL THE DENVER BRONCOS SEASON TURN?

The Denver Broncos season can break either way as we head into the final quarter of the regular season. The Broncos are 8-4, and while they trail both Oakland and Kansas City in the division, they are head-to-head games against both still looming. On the other hand, Denver is only a game ahead of Miami and the Pittsburgh/Baltimore runner-up for the final wild-card spot. The Broncos could rise as high as the 2-seed or they could miss the postseason altogether.

A look at the schedule shows how combustible Denver’s situation is right now. They go to Tennessee on Sunday…

Will The Alabama Pass Defense Hold Up In The Playoff?

Alabama has played the entire season of free drama. There have been no unexpected slipups like they had in the title runs of 2012 and 2015. The Crimson Tide opened the season at #1 and save for one game against Ole Miss in September, they haven’t been seriously challenged. It’s with good reason the Tide are a 4-7 favorite to win the College Football Playoff for the second straight year, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some interesting warning signs to keep an eye on.

The secondary of Alabama hasn’t been consistently tested against top-quality passing games. The one…

THE CRAZY START OF INDIANA BASKETBALL

Has any college basketball team in the country had a wilder start to the season than the Indiana Hoosiers. They opened with a game against Kansas on a military carrier and pulled out a 103-99 overtime win. Earlier this week, the Hoosiers knocked off defending NCAA runner-up North Carolina 76-61. In between, they paid a visit to a little IP-Fort Wayne and went home with an overtime loss. Who are the real Hoosiers?

It’s a pertinent question, because it’s not often that a team capable of knocking off two national powers this quickly is priced at a long 40-1…

CAN THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS CLIMB OFF THE MAT?

The demise of the Minnesota Vikings as a playoff contender continued last night. They lost for the sixth time in seven games, fell to 6-6 and realistically gave away their last bit of margin for error. Those that bet on the Vikes and grabbed the (+3) were able to collect in the 17-15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. But that’s small consolation for a team that was once the toast of the NFC and for futures bettors who may have invested in them.

What Minnesota does have going for them is a manageable schedule down the stretch. They go…

NFL Quarterback Shuffle

by Jim Feist

2016…The Year of the Quarterback...Are you kidding? While the numbers that Matt Ryan, Tom Brady and Drew Brees are putting up are sizzling, the last five NFL seasons have been the Year of the Quarterback Shuffle, too.  The number of NFL quarterbacks teams have been forced to throw in has been astounding. The Patriots had Brady suspended the first four games, then lost both backup QBs Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Jacoby Brissett to injuries. That all came to bear in a 16-0 home loss to the Bills.   Dallas has been battling injuries to QB Tony Romo…

OHIO STATE’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS: IS 5-2 A GOOD PRICE?

Ohio State is priced at 5-2 odds to win college football’s national championship, the second-lowest price in the country after 5-8 favorite Alabama. It’s a reflection of the regard the market has for the Buckeyes’ body of work this season, the quality of their personnel and the certainty that they will be included in the College Football Playoff when the final pairings are announced on Sunday morning.

But is that confidence misguided?

There’s considerable evidence to suggest that it is. Let’s begin with Ohio State’s body of work. The Buckeyes’ early-season credibility was built on their decisive 45-24 win…

THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS SURGE INTO CONTENTION

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have surged into the playoff picture with three straight wins. The Bucs now stand at 6-5, one game in the NFC South and just a half-game back in the wild-card race. If you believe in this surge, there’s money on the table—Tampa is still a healthy 7-2 price to win a division where Atlanta remains the top-heavy (-400) favorite. And in an NFC that could produce postseason surprises, the Bucs are 50-1 to reach the Super Bowl and 125-1 to win it. Just how much is this Tampa team worthy of confidence?

Turkeys, Turnovers and TV Showdowns!

It's Thanksgiving week, which means the middle of the NFL campaign while winding down the college football regular season. Late season college football means heated races for conference titles and bowl berths, plus rivalries that span decades. These games can have far more importance for players than September/October clashes. Oklahoma/Ok-State, USC/UCLA, Florida/Florida State, Georgia/Georgia Tech, Michigan/Ohio State and Auburn/Alabama bring out extra intensity and emotion.  A year ago this week Michigan State and Ohio State locked horns in a Big 10 rivalry thriller, with the Spartans pulling the 17-14 upset on the road as a +16 dog, altering…

WHAT AILS THE ARIZONA CARDINALS?

It’s been a rough season thus far for the Arizona Cardinals. They’re 4-5-1 and with a three-game margin separating them from the Seattle Seahawks, any NFC West title hopes are all but gone. The Cardinals are two games back of the Washington Redskins for the final wild-card spot. There’s hope there, but time is running short and a visit to NFC South-leading Atlanta looms as a must-win. It’s been a definite drop down for fourth-year head coach Bruce Arians, who won double-digit games in each of his first three seasons in the desert.

The season has been even worse…

IS DUKE BASKETBALL A FLAWED FAVORITE?

Duke opened the college basketball season in a familiar role—that of favorite to win the national championship. The Blue Devils are a 7-2 bet to win the Final Four in Phoenix next April. Now let’s be clear—we would never suggest wagering a team at those odds on the futures market, at least not this far out. We do think it’s important to do careful analysis of Duke’s national championship chances though, in order to make a better assessment of whether there’s value further down the card.

Something else we would never do would be to encourage overreaction to one…

THE WISCONSIN BADGERS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP CHANCES

But the Badgers picked themselves up, started ripping through the softer opponents of the Big Ten West and are now on the cusp of winning the Big Ten title, with the real possibility of making the Playoff. The odds of Wisconsin doing what was once unthinkable—winning the national championship—have now shortened to 12-1, or the same price as Michigan.

IS THERE MONEY TO BE MADE ON WASHINGTON STATE?

Washington State controls their own destiny for the Pac-12 title with a 7-0 league record. Their 8-2 mark overall is on a par with College Football Playoff contenders like Wisconsin, ranked seventh in the most recent CFP rankings. Yet the Cougars aren’t given much respect, in their league or in the nation overall.

Even with their path to the conference championship clear, college football bettors can still get a 13-2 price on Washington State to win the Pac-12, not bad for this late date. If you’re looking for a longshot at a national championship, the number there…

THE MIAMI DOLPHINS HAVE BEEN A LIVE DOG

The Miami Dolphins have played their way back into the hunt for a postseason spot by thriving on the underdog role. While the Dolphins’ overall ATS record matches their 5-4 straight-up record, it’s the six games where they’ve been a dog that stand out. Miami has covered the number in four of those games, won three outright and should have won all four.

The trend started in Week 1 when Miami went to Seattle getting (+10.5), had the outright win seemingly in the bag before the Seahawks stole a 12-10 win. But Fish bettors got the money. In their…

THE NEW YORK GIANTS SUPER BOWL CHANCES

In the wake of the New York Giants’ 21-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals yesterday on Monday Night Football, Giants’ wide receiver Odell Beckham proclaimed his team was on their way to the Super Bowl. Las Vegas is a little more skeptical—the Giants’ are a 35-1 shot to win it all. Who’s right, Odell or the oddsmakers?

Beckham’s comments were standard fare for a flamboyant receiver, but he does have a leg to stand on. A simple glance at the standings show New York sitting at 6-3, trailing only Dallas and Seattle among NFC teams. The defense ranks 11th…

NFL Offensive Lines + Home/Road Disparity

by Jim Feist

Years ago former NFL head coach John Madden was asked if he had one player to draft to build his team around, who would it be?  Everyone expected him to take the top quarterback of the day, such as Terry Bradshaw or Roger Staubach. Instead he replied, “John Hannah,” the Patriots Hall of Fame offensive guard.  Madden explained, “What good is having a star quarterback if you can’t protect him and he’s running for his life?”  Madden could have been talking about the 2016 NFL season. The Dallas Cowboys drafted Ezekiel Elliot and announced back in preseason that…

PENN STATE’S BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP CHANCES

On Saturday morning, if you wanted to bet Penn State to win the Big Ten title, a 65-1 price was waiting for you. Those odds have dropped sharply in the wake of Saturday’s chaos. There’s another team in the Midwest, one that’s never won a Super Bowl and whose fans are desperate for something big to cheer about. I refer to the Detroit Lions—who, as it turns out, are a coming on strong in an NFC that looks wide-open.

Detroit started the season 1-3 and it looked like business as usual. On October 9, they began to turn it around and…

But with four wins already under their belt this year and only a game back in the AFC South, this could be the year the Titans stay on everyone’s radar for reasons other than the #1 draft pick. Football Totals and Coaching Philosophies

by Jim Feist

There are many factors to examine when studying football totals. Defensive and offensive statistics need to be examined, of course. Some of the questions a good handicapper asks: Is there speed in the defensive secondary? Does a club have a one-dimensional offense? Do they prefer a powerful running game or wide-open passing attacks? What kind of weather conditions will there be?    Another area that is correlated to totals is coaching philosophy. Coaches build their teams around a combination of the style they want to play, plus the personnel on the field. The Ravens, for example, have had an abundance…

BETTING THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

The first rankings of the College Football Playoff will come out on Tuesday and every pundit will have an opinion on who the top four teams should be. I’m less concerned with that at this stage of the game, then I am with finding good value on the national championship betting odds. If a team is genuinely good enough, things will probably work out for them to make the Playoff. If they’re not, a loss usually finds them even if the schedule seems to line up.

Any discussion about the national championship has to begin with Alabama, the 8-5…

NFL WEEK 7 WRAPS UP WITH TEXANS AT BRONCOS PLUS WE DISSECT SUNDAY’S WILD/WACKY ACTION INCLUDING 6-6 DRAW BETWEEN ‘HAWKS & CARDS …COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKEND NOTES: BUCKEYES SHOCKED AT HAPPY VALLEY …AND OUR 2016 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW: WHO SNAPS THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP DROUGHT, CUBS OR INDIANS?

Fit to be tied!

Whoa, what in blazes was going on Sunday night in that kooky Seattle Seahawks at Arizona Cardinals game?

Not only did both ace kickers miss chip-shot field goals that would have won the game in overtime but truth is neither team deserved to win in that 6-6 draw:

The Seahawks generated next-to-no offense as QB…

UTAH’S PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP CHANCES

The Utah Utes took a big step forward in the Pac-12 race when they rolled up a 52-45 win over UCLA. The win puts Utah in a tie for first in the Pac-12 South and they control their own destiny for reaching the conference championship game. While Washington is the decisive (-200) favorite to capture the Pac-12 crown, Utah’s 11-4 price tag isn’t far behind.

The toughest part of the Utah schedule is still ahead though and it begins next Saturday with a home date against Washington. The Utes are a (+10.5) dog on their homefield. And while much…

DON’T FORGET THE DALLAS DEFENSE

Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott has become one of the big storylines in the NFL this season and with good reason. Prescott has played at an MVP level in leading the Cowboys to five straight wins, both straight-up and ATS. Three of those wins came as underdog, including last Sunday’s decisive 30-16 win in Green Bay as a (+5) dog. But as the Cowboys take a well-earned bye week, don’t forget that they’re also playing some pretty good defense.

Three short years ago the Dallas defense was one of the worst in the NFL. They made a change at…

NEBRASKA’S BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are enjoying a bounceback season. After a miserable 2015 year where they finished 6-7 with at least five of those losses meriting the label “gutwrenching”, the Cornhuskers have already matched last year’s win total with their 6-0 start in 2016. As the race for the Big Ten title heats up in these coming weeks, is there any money to be made investing in Nebraska?

The Cornhuskers are a short 2-1 price to win the Western Division, a race where the stiffest competition likely comes from Iowa (the 5-4 favorite) and Wisconsin (5-1). Nebraska’s odds to win…

WHY THE NEW YORK JETS OFFENSE IS AWFUL

To say the New York Jets’ offense has been awful is an insult to awful offenses everywhere. This Jets’ offense is establishing an entirely new level of ineptitude. They’re averaging 15.8 points per game, the worst in the NFL and more than a touchdown below the league average. They’ve failed to score a touchdown in two different games, including Monday Night’s 28-3 loss in Arizona. This was a game me and my clients cashed in to the tune of 25 Units, as we took the Cardinals, gave the (-7) and watched the Jets founder all night long.

It’s one…

Gotta say the best part of the Monday Night Football broadcast was watching those terribly bored New York Jets’ fans in the crowd at Arizona – the Cardinals’ workmanlike 28-3 win/cover against the hapless J-E-T-S happened to be a major snore-fest filled with penalty flags but it was amusing to see the NYJ fans decked out in the team colors roll their eyes with every bad QB…

Turnovers Can Turn the Tide (SU and ATS)

by Jim Feist

Last month the Patriots and Dolphins an AFC East rivalry game. The Dolphins finished with 447 total yards, as QB Ryan Tannehill had 387 passing and was not sacked once. Miami even knocked Pats' QB Jimmy Garappolo out of the game with an injury. So, a big Miami road win? A point spread cover? Actually, neither. The Dolphins never led, down 31-3 on the way to their eighth straight loss in Foxboro.  So what was the difference? It was simple: Miami lost the turnover battle 4-1. Another  division clash one year ago at this time was when…
