THE NBA IS BACK - WE WEIGH IN ON THE "VALUES" OUT THERE AND THE "OVERPRICED" TEAMS TOO

COLLEGE BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: THURSDAY'S MARQUEE MATCHUP

Welcome back, NBA!

The All-Star Game break is in everyone's rear-view mirror by now and so we immediately hit the hoops ground runnin' with Trade Deadline talk - what teams are really gonna be beefing up their roster by 3 p.m. ET today? - and chatter about what's gonna happen in these final seven weeks or so of regular-season play.

One thing we've always liked to do is examine what NBA teams may or may not present good "value" from…

THE COLLEGE B-BALL MID-WEEK UPDATE:

THE "GOTTA-HAVE-A-WIN TONIGHT" TEAMS ...

NFL DRAFT NEWS & NOTES: HOW MANY QUARTERBACKS ARE 1ST-ROUND BOUND?

No doubt we're getting your vibes - everyone's getting all hot-and-bothered over the upcoming "brackets" and, sure enough, NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday is just around the corner on March 12th. So just chill!

The fact of the matter is the 68-team NCAA Tournament field may already have 40-plus "definites" as we pointed out in our earlier-week Jim Sez column but you better believe there's some real jostling for a handful-plus at-large bids and keeping with this late-season theme we'll concentrate here on a…

Richie Baccellieri: Can You Beat Vegas Fading Bad Teams?

The last time we were together I talked about how difficult it is to anticipate which teams are going to be great against the pointspread. Even if you find an early surprise, the market will typically adjust fairly quickly.

What about the other end of the spectrum? Does it make sense to fade bad teams all through a season? Unfortunately, many of the same issues apply.

*Not all teams who are projected to be bad turn out to be bad.

*Many of those ugly teams are already on people’s “bet against” list anyway

*If you’re ahead of the curve at first, the line should…

How Good Are The Florida Gators?

The Florida Gators are coming on strong after an 81-66 thumping of South Carolina last night. The Gators have won nine in a row and are set up for a big game at Kentucky on Saturday (2 PM ET, CBS) where they will meet for the lead in the SEC race and to move up in the fight for NCAA Tournament seed position. More importantly, Florida is still a potential value bet in the race for the national championship.

Florida is priced at 28-1 to win the NCAA title in Phoenix on April 3. They’re at an interesting spot…

Network Notebook: TV Preview…#7 Louisville at #8 N. Carolina

There are so many good teams in the ACC right now that college basketball fans and sports bettors are treated to marquee matchups on almost a daily basis. Everyone should really be looking forward to Wednesday Night’s class on ESPN featuring #7 Louisville and #8 North Carolina. Those two are currently on the short list of legitimate National Championship threats. Just yesterday, Joe Lunardi of ESPN moved North Carolina up to a #1 seed because of their impressive recent form.

Carolina did look great last Saturday when dominating fading Virginia. Louisville has been a money team all season as you’ll see…

Since this is the week that UCLA plays Arizona again (this coming Saturday night on ESPN), let’s check in on what’s been happening in the Pac 12 as we prepare for the coming postseason. You regulars know I pay particular attention to the only major conference with proximity to Las Vegas. It’s been so great having the Pac 12 postseason tournament here in Las Vegas in recent years!

March Madness was a relative disaster for the Pac 12 back in 2016. We talked about it a lot at the time. Here’s a quick review. Outside of Oregon…it was HUMILIATING!

College Hoops: Best of the SEC 2-21-2017

by Jim Feist

The SEC has a bunch of teams loaded with talent, depth and athleticism.  Kentucky won national championships in 1998 and 2012 and the title game in 2014, Florida knocked on the door in 2000 getting to the title game against Michigan State, then won it all with back-to-back titles. Here's a look at some of college basketball's best teams in the SEC.

Kentucky: The Wildcats have another powerhouse young team for coach John Calipari, who likes to groom them for one year before they head off to the NBA. The backcourt leads the way for Kentucky with freshmen guards…

Richie Baccellieri: Tough to Beat Vegas “Riding Hot Horses”

Every season there are a relative handful of teams who post excellent records against the Nevada pointspreads. It can be easy for gamblers, after the fact, to start thinking “if only I had been riding those teams since the beginning of the season, I’d have made a fortune.”

While technically true, it’s virtually impossible to anticipate in advance who those teams are going to be. First, nobody’s psychic. Second, oddsmakers and sharps tend to react quickly to teams who consistently play better than expected out of the gate. So, the strategy of “riding a hot horse” through the whole season is…

The New-Look New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans were certainly the story of All-Star weekend, and not just because they hosted the event and Anthony Davis went off for a record 52 points in last night’s defensively-challenged display. The Pelicans made the league’s big move off the court as well, acquiring Demarcus Cousins from Sacramento in exchange for a modest package highlighted by rookie shooter Buddy Hield. Talk in the media was alive this morning that the Pelicans are on their way to the playoffs and even that Golden State needs to be concerned about a potential 1 vs. 8 matchup in the…

Because all of the current powers in college basketball have at least one exploitable weakness, 2017 could be a year where an off-the-radar team gets hot in March and pulls off a SHOCK THE NATION championship run.

If the tournament were being held right now, a team like Oklahoma State would seem to be the ideal candidate. The Cowboys won for me as a PERFECT PLAY Wednesday night on the road at TCU. Richie Baccellieri: How Sharps Grind Out Profit

The heart of college basketball season is a great time to review how sharps (professional wagerers) make their living. Too many casual bettors have a “big score” or a “get rich quick” mentality. Sharp betting in the modern era is much more about playing every edge you can find as you grind out a profit with something even as conservative as a 53-55% win rate. Build your wealth slowly and surely rather than letting everything ride on one or two big bets.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Sharps do make some big bets! But those are relatively rare because:

Don’t Hand James Harden The MVP Just Yet

James Harden has pulled out to a decisive lead in the race to be NBA MVP, at least if we measure the race by the sentiments of the betting market. Harden is the (-110) favorite, having surpassed Russell Westbrook, who now sits at (+125). There may be money to made in this race for the NBA’s highest individual honor.

Make no mistake—if the season ends today, Harden is a slam-dunk choice for MVP. He’s averaging 29ppg. That’s impressive enough on its face, but it’s also expected from Harden. What hasn’t been expected is the improved rebounding he’s offered from…

Michigan is embarrassed to be seen nationally as a “bubble” team given the recent history of the program. Though, an impressive win over Indiana at least pushed them aggressively to the right side of the bubble.

College Hoops: Best Big 10 Teams

Wayne Root: Can Gonzaga Shock the Nation in Big Dance?

It’s very odd to ask this about a team that’s undefeated in mid-February, and is very likely to be a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament next month. But, because Gonzaga continues to be so DIS-RESPECTED by the national media and oddsmakers….I have to ask…can Gonzaga shock the nation in the Big Dance and win a national championship?

You see…Gonzaga isn’t thought of as a “real” threat to go the distance because they play such a weak regular season schedule. The West Coast Conference is pretty pathetic these days. Nobody there is capable of scaring Gonzaga any more. I, myself, thought…

That will be the toughest game of the season for Gonzaga until the NCA Tournament (possibly until the Sweet 16 round of the Dance!). Wichita State basketball has been front and center for some moneymaking opportunities in March the past several years. What The Film Says About Super Bowl LI

The quarterback matchup for Super Bowl LI is fantastic. The storyline of the league’s top offense (Atlanta) facing it’s best defense (New England) is compelling. Atlanta’s defense has come on, both down the stretch and in the NFC playoffs. They’ve used edge pressure to completely…

OUR SUPER BOWL LI NOTEBOOK:

THE COUNTDOWN TO THE BIG GAME IS ON AND WE PRESENT "ALL THINGS SUPER BOWL" HERE WITH LOTS OF POINTSPREAD GOODIES ...

THE COLLEGE BASKETBALL REPORT: WHAT TEAMS OUTSIDE THE TOP 10 ARE LURKING WHEN IT COMES TO THIS YEAR'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP?

Okay, so the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons had their "touch down" on Sunday in Houston ... now both teams will be looking for lots of "touchdowns" come Sunday when they square off in Super Bowl LI:

Hey, scoring touchdowns has not been a real problem for either one of these teams this post-season as…

Inside The Marquette Basketball Roller-Coaster

On the surface, Marquette basketball looks like a banal, middling program. They’re projected as an 8-seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. They’re 10-10-1 against the spread. That all screams “middle of the road.” But the path the Golden Eagles take to the middle of the road is unpredictable, with all the opportunities for moneymaking that chaos provides.

The events of the past nine days tell the story. Marquette went to Creighton as a (+6) dog and came home with a 102-94 outright upset. Last Tuesday, the Golden Eagles hosted #1-ranked Villanova and as a (+5) dog,…

A Week and Counting Until The Super Bowl

THE NFL REPORT:WE'RE ONE WEEK OUT FROM SUPER BOWL LI AS PATRIOTS-FALCONS MATCHUP GROWS NEAR - WHAT TO WATCH WHEN ATLANTA HAS THE BALL..

COLLEGE HOOPS WEEKEND GOODIES

Let's face it ...Aside from those usual "personal stories" that gobble up newspaper/internet space such as how folks like Atlanta head coach Dan Quinn and New England WR Chris Hogan have made it to this point, the fact of the matter is this week-before-the-Super-Bowl is always a real yawner.

Everyone - and we mean everyone - wants to get to Super Bowl LI as soon as possible but the reality is it's a waiting game…

Jim Sez Has More Super Bowl Analysis and NBA Trade Rumors

HEY FOLKS, JUST BE PATIENT! SUPER BOWL 51 WILL BE HERE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT AND WE STILL HAVE LOTS OF ANALYSES TO DROP ON Y'ALL.

PLUS THE NBA RUMOR MILL IS STAYIN' HOT

Why does it always feel as if the two weeks between NFL Championship Game Day and Super Bowl Sunday is way loooonger than just 14 days?

Gotta say that we've wished for a long time that the NFL would go straight from the NFC/AFC title games to the Super Bowl - if nothing else, history has proven that the Super Bowl games are better when played one week after…

The Philadelphia 76ers Are No Longer An NBA Joke

The Philadelphia 76ers have been the butt of jokes in the NBA for several years now, as they’ve deliberately tanked seasons to get high draft picks. The 76ers have been below 20 wins per year each season since the strike-shortened year of 2012. They haven’t had a winning season in a full 82-game schedule since 2005. That latter streak likely won’t change this year, but at 17-27, the 76ers are moving back to respectability. And, from the standpoint of an NBA bettor they’ve turned into a profitable investment.

Philadelphia is 26-17-1 against the spread and have been particularly tough…

Can Northwestern Basketball Stay A Moneymaker?

Northwestern basketball has been in existence since 1904 and they’ve never made the NCAA Tournament. This year’s Wildcats team has the look of one set to make history—they’re 16-4, projected as a 7-seed by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi if the bracket were released today and they’re even in the mix for the Big Ten championship.

More important for college basketball bettors, Northwestern has been a moneymaker. Their ATS record is a profitable 12-4-1, They’ve been especially tough to handle in Evanston where they’ve covered the number twelve times in fourteen games and they even offer the edge of being somewhat…
