Network Notebook: NCAA Preview…N. Carolina vs. Kentucky

Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 4:00 PM

It turned out that UCLA didn’t have the horses to run with Kentucky for a full 40 minutes in the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins faded down the stretch Friday night in a double digit loss. North Carolina is better than UCLA (allegedly), which gives fans a shot for an Elite 8 thrill ride Sunday afternoon when the Tar Heels and Wildcats meet in Memphis. You’re going to watch. You want to know who’s going to win and cover! Before getting to JIM HURLEY’S key indicator stats, let’s run through Friday night’s boxscores… North Carolina 92, Butler 80 2-point Shooting: Butler 56%, N.…

Network Notebook: NCAA Preview…Kansas vs. Oregon

Friday, March 24, 2017 at 8:00 PM

The Kansas Jayhawks sure picked the right time to peak. After a disappointing “one-and-out” in the Big 12 tournament two weeks ago, the Jayhawks truly hit the ground running in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Thursday night’s win over Purdue featured one of the most impressive stretches of basketball ever. Kansas closed the game on a 73-33 spring against a #4 seed. Hard to find stuff like that in the history books! Now Kansas must come back two days later ready to win again. And, this time, they’re not facing a Big 10 foe (Michigan State and Purdue were the last two…

Wayne Root: Arizona Finally Exposed, Who’s Next?!

Friday, March 24, 2017 at 11:00 AM

The only game I didn’t have a selection in this past Thursday night in the Sweet 16 of the 2017 NCAA Tournament was the Arizona/Xavier matchup. As skeptical as I was about Arizona laying a price as high as -7.5 points….it was very tough to pull the trigger on a Xavier team that was due to fall back to earth after playing so far over its head.I should have pulled the trigger. Xavier exemplified that “us against the world” chip on their shoulder mentality that underdogs have to have in this big event. I can’t say I was shocked that…

Sweet 16: The Value of Senior Leadership

Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist It's important to understand and closely examine the schedule and the roster of college hoop teams. Some teams start off the season playing a bunch of cream puffs, while others face a mixture of good and bad teams.   Some schools want to get a few cheap victories over smaller schools and fatten up their won/lost record early in the season, while others want to test their teams early to toughen them up for conference play. Now it's the final stretch run for the title. This is where the weak links drop off, while the better teams advance, though…

THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: THURSDAY'S SWEET 16 MATCHUPS PLUS OUR TOURNEY POINTSPREAD CHARTOkay, so it's hard to find a bigger story in Thursday's pair of NCAA Tournament doubleheaders than this still-scorching Michigan Wolverines' team - the Big 10 Tournament champs already have dunked Oklahoma State and Louisville in this "Big Dance" and now they're actually a slight betting favorite over mighty Oregon - but might a couple of other teams in action here on this first night of Sweet 16 play be ultra-dangerous as they operate under the proverbial radar?Take West Virginia, who have a shot to bop #1 West seed…

When the brackets for the 2017 NCAA Tournament were first announced, many eyes were looking ahead to a potential Sweet 16 matchup between historical hoop powers UCLA and Kentucky. Sure, we all know that upsets can wreak havoc with Dance plans. And, both UCLA and Kentucky were capable of getting taken out by dangerous second round foes. Now you know why!Since this past Wednesday, my Big Dance selections are an incredible 17-4 against the pointspread, with an undefeated 4-0 record on my vaunted PINNACLE plays. Nobody in the country is on that kind of tear. Bettors celebrate records like 6-4 (60%) or 8-4 (67%)…but 17-4 is on a whole different level. This is why WAYNE ALLYN ROOT is the only man in the sports betting industry with a star on the “Walk of Fame” in Las Vegas! Here’s a quick recap…Cal-Davis +3 beat NC Central outright 67-63Middle…

Richie Baccellieri: How Sharps Are Betting Sunday’s Dance Card

More great matchups Sunday because there so few upsets in first round action. Cinderella rarely no-shows a Big Dance. So, maybe we’ll have some shockers on this eight-game card.Let’s see how sharps (professional wagerers) have been betting so far. As we’ve been doing this week, we’ll use the Nevada rotation order for the regions, but then tipoff order at each region so it’s easier for you to follow along throughout the day. Network Notebook: NCAA Preview…UCLA vs. Cincinnati

Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 3:00 PM

Cincinnati might be the LAST team the UCLA Bruins wanted to face in the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. And, the kids from the City of Angels already had an unlucky draw getting stuck up front in the same region with North Carolina and Kentucky!Cincinnati plays very slow, UCLA likes it very fastCincinnati plays tough physical defense, UCLA wants to put on a showCincinnati has improved its offense, which matches up well vs. UCLA’s soft defenseIt’s not quite Kryptonite across the board. UCLA is still a market betting favorite after all. But, the Bruins must shine in a style…

Richie Baccellieri: How Sharps Are Betting Saturday’s Dance Card

Friday, March 17, 2017 at 7:00 PM

There were so few outright upsets in Thursday’s first round action that lines solidified very quickly for Saturday’s second round matchups. Oddsmakers knew where the lines should open because so many pairings featured known TV programs. Almost every game is within a bucket or two from pick-em because there’s so much parity amongst the major conference contenders this season. Let’s go game by game to see if sharps have been able to find a way to shave of some edges. As we’ve been doing all weekend, we’ll go in schedule order of the locations, but tipoff order at each location.   IN…

Network Notebook: NCAA Preview…Arizona vs. St. Mary’s

Friday, March 17, 2017 at 4:00 PM

One of the most compelling games on the Saturday “Round of 32” card in the 2017 NCAA Tournament is the St. Mary’s/Arizona showdown in the West Region brackets. Not only could the game loom very large over the whole event. But, both teams played their conference tournaments in Las Vegas…which means the BETTING handle could be huge. The locals want to get involved after watching both last week. Each team has a meaningful following in terms of market support this season (Arizona always does, St. Mary’s does THIS YEAR because they’re playing so well and cashing tickets). And, we can’t leave out…

Network Notebook: NCAA Preview…Wichita State vs. Dayton

Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 7:00 PM

It’s truly one of the most interesting stories of the modern sports era. We have a consistently successful mid-major college basketball program that proves itself time and time again, yet the NCAA selection committee thinks they’re chopped liver!A year ago, Wichita State was seeded #11 in the Big Dance. It was kind of a co-crime of the century along with Gonzaga getting the same seed. Both teams were market FAVORITES over their sixth-seeded opponents when they first took the floor. After winning, both teams were market FAVORITES over the third-seeded teams they took on next.Did the selection committee learn anything?…

Network Notebook: NCAA Preview…Nevada vs. Iowa State

Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 1:00 PM

The TV networks seemed to stack the Day One schedule with daytime Cinderella possibilities. They may find out that the most exciting game of the whole card will be in prime time when Mountain West tournament winner (and regular season champ) Nevada tries to upset Big 12 tournament winner Iowa State. Both teams are obviously in great form. But, Iowa State may be due to let down because winning the Big 12 tournament is so hard! A great run from the Cyclones last weekend included wins over late-charging Oklahoma State, and computer favorite West Virginia. Nevada got to stay in its…

Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 1:00 PM

What a difference a week makes! Heading into the semifinals of the Pac 12 tournament last weekend here in Las Vegas…*Oregon fans (and many in the local media) were thinking a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament was within reach for the Ducks. If they won the Pac 12 tourney, their resume would certainly measure up with the best in the nation. Teams who watch a lot of basketball out West believed Oregon is better than Gonzaga.*UCLA fans (and many in the local media) were thinking the Bruins would be in line for a #2 seed in the West if…

Tourney Wagering Tips: Goliaths and Guard Play

Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim FeistMarch basketball is one of the most exciting times of the sports betting calendar. A seemingly endless stream of games, at times running morning, noon and night, will test the nerves and cognitive powers of fans and bettors. It can be a time of highs and lows, with streaks, exciting finishes and surprising upsets.    What has taken shape the last few months, though, is largely conference play. Since conferences are purposely made up of schools with a similar level of talent, you need to pay attention to how teams start the season and what their schedule has…

Wayne Root: Finding Cinderellas in the 2017 Big Dance

Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 1:00 PM

Every year at this time, I outline strategies for you in terms of finding Cinderella possibilities in the NCAA Tournament. The 2017 Dance is set up to launch a relative surprise all the way to the Finial Four because there’s so much relative parity in the upper echelons this year. Now, I’m not going to tell you right here that we’re going to have a replay of somebody like George Mason or VCU reaching the Final Four this year (though that’s possible!). Brad Stevens is coaching in the NBA…so the back-to-back greatness of Butler from not too long ago won’t likely…

Network Notebook: SEC Preview…Kentucky vs. Arkansas

Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 6:00 PM

It seems like everyone’s forgotten the Kentucky Wildcats. They’re usually on the short list of national championship hopefuls. Some years you get the idea they’re the ONLY team on the media’s short list! This season, though, Kentucky has dropped into a kind of purgatory…they’re not good enough to be a #1 seed, but they’re not disappointing enough to be labelled a bust.Sunday’s SEC Championship matchup with Arkansas will give us one last look at John Calipari’s team heading into the Big Dance. Some pundits were suggesting that Kentucky had a shot to storm to a #1 seed after both Kansas…

Network Notebook: Big 10 Preview…Michigan vs. Minnesota

Friday, March 10, 2017 at 5:00 PM

The Big 10 has come under a lot of fire this season for mediocre basketball. But, two teams who appear to be peaking at the right time will meet Saturday in the semifinals in Washington, DC. If the nation’s sports media and statheads only focused on the second half of conference seasons, everyone would be RAVING about Michigan and Minnesota! Both are in the Final Four of the Big 10 tournament…and either could make big headlines next week in the Dance. Let’s start our preview of this showcase semifinal with a quick review of Friday’s boxscore statistics… Michigan 74, Purdue 70 (in…

Richie Baccellieri: Use Caution With Powers From Weak Conferences

Friday, March 10, 2017 at 3:00 PM

I’ve compiled some bonus Power Ratings for you for teams who won automatic bids in some of the lesser conferences. Before I run through those, I wanted to let you know about something I do with my personal ratings just before the Big Dance starts. For teams who ran roughshod over a weak conference all season, particularly if they won their conference tournament in impressive fashion, I pull the rating back at least a half a point. Great examples this year are Gonzaga and Wichita State. It was easy to keep lifting their rating during strong stretches. Then, they both won…

Wayne Root: Dogs Rule Quarterfinals of Power Tournaments

Friday, March 10, 2017 at 10:00 AM

For years I’ve been telling you to focus on underdogs in the strongest conference tournaments because the best teams will likely get caught looking ahead to the Big Dance. Thursday’s results bore that out in fairly dramatic fashion. Not only did projected #1 national seed Kansas lose in a shocker to TCU…but:*Underdogs in the Big 12 went 4-0 against the spread, including other outright upsets by Kansas State (a millionaire play on my Root Trust) over Baylor and Iowa State over Oklahoma State.*Underdogs in the ACC went 3-1 against the spread, including outright upsets by Duke over Louisville and Notre…

Network Notebook: Championship Week Notes

Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 7:00 AM

Earlier this week, we provided in-depth statistical looks at the two strongest college basketball conferences in the nation. We hope you’ll refer often to those ACC and Big 12 tournament previews.Today, we’re going to discuss the other for “major” conferences that will be all over your TV screen this week, and all over the Big Dance brackets next week. That of course means the three other “Power 5” football conferences (Big 10, Pac 10, and SEC), and the oft-overlooked Big East (home of the defending champs Villanova!)Big 10: This league has made a lot of headlines for NOT having anybody…

Richie Baccellieri: Reviewing How Sharps Time the Market

Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 4:00 PM

With the conference tournaments upon us, and the NCAA Tournament less than a week away, I wanted to spend some time reviewing for you how sharps (professional wagerers) time the market with their bets.New lines will be popping up at a relatively random but furious pace these next few days in particular. A result today sets up a new matchup tomorrow…and that new matchup needs a pointspread! Here’s what you need to remember.*If sharps like a favorite, they bet EARLY. They know the general public prefers betting favorites to an extreme degree. The best line you’re going to get on a…

Wayne Root: Vegas Buzzed About Pac 12 Tourney

Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM

Las Vegas has hosted the Pac 12 postseason college basketball tournament for a few years now. But, there’s never been quite this amount of buzz. Don’t get me wrong, the city is always electric for this event. This season, though, avid fans of three teams who travel well are all very confident they have the best team. And they’re not being shy about expressing it!*Oregon is the top seed, and their fans are convinced that they’ll earn the #1 seed in the West in the NCAA’s if they win this tournament. Don’t tell Oregon fans they’re not as good as…

Network Notebook: Big 12 Tournament Preview

Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 7:00 PM

The Kansas Jayhawks have already celebrated a well-hyped regular season championship. They’ve already congratulated their point guard on his “Player of the Year” award. They’re already a lock for a #1 seed because they were so impressive in a power conference. Will that leave them complacent for this week’s Big 12 tournament? It should help that the event is being held in Kansas City, a virtual home-away-from-home for the Jayhawks. But, this is a talented conference, and KU had to sweat a few regular season games even back when they were motivated! We hope you enjoyed our ACC preview yesterday. Let’s…

Jim Feist: Big 12 Title Contenders

Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist    The Big 12 is loaded with rebounders, fast-pace attacks and teams capable of making runs to the Final Four. However, there has only been two national championships out of the conference in the last 40 years: Kansas (1988, 2008).  Several will be knocking on the door again, though.Kansas: Bill Self's team is loaded with balance and experience behind 5-11 senior Frank Mason (20 ppg, 4 rpg, 5 apg), 6-8 freshman Josh Jackson (16.5 ppg, 7 rpg) and junior G Deonte Graham (13 ppg, 4.5 apg).  They've already taken down Duke (77-75) as a dog and has run…

Network Notebook: ACC Tournament Preview

Monday, March 6, 2017 at 7:00 PM

Though there was some debate midseason about whether the ACC or the Big 12 was the nation’s strongest conference…it now seems pretty clear that the ACC is well clear of the field. They are currently projected to get 10 teams into the Big Dance. There are only 10 teams in the entire Big 12! It’s possible that more from the ACC will be added if bubble teams like Clemson and Georgia Tech get good results this week in the league tournament. We’re going to preview the ACC today, and the Big 12 tomorrow here in JIM HURLEY’S HANDICAPPING NOTEBOOK. We’ll start…

Wayne Root: How to Find PINNACLE Plays in Tourneys

Monday, March 6, 2017 at 2:00 PM

Last time, I talked about general handicapping principals for the tournaments. If you missed that article, go back and read it! Today I’m going to talk about how to narrow down your options to find the very best choices that are worthy of PINNACLE caliber bets.I hope you won with me this past Saturday night when North Carolina got the money at -6.5 at home against Duke. Yeah, we had to sweat that one. But, you know what? We had to sweat that one because the refs kept sending Duke to the free throw line all night! That’s not supposed…

Richie Baccellieri: How Sharps Profit From Futures

Monday, March 6, 2017 at 7:00 AM

One of the biggest misconceptions about betting Futures prices is that you have to win your bet to win money. It’s true that…IF THAT’S YOUR ONLY BET…then you have to win it to cash. But, sharps don’t bet Futures that way. Sharps bet futures to position themselves to guarantee profits with later bets.Let’s say you have your eye on an “off-the-radar” team that you believe has a good chance to reach at least the Sweet 16. Maybe they’re playing great of late and the media hasn’t noticed. Maybe they’re a veteran team with a solid point guard who’s just been…

Network Notebook: Colonial Championship Preview

Sunday, March 5, 2017 at 7:00 PM

March Madness has barely begun, and already several prominent seeds from lesser conferences have suffered heartbreak. Teams Joe Lunardi had been penciling into the brackets for weeks WON’T be going to the Dance. Sorry Belmont, Oakland, and Monmouth! But, in the Colonial Conference, form has prevailed so far. Championship Week kicks off Monday night with #1 seed NC Wilmington battling #2 seed College of Charleston for the only CAA bid.We won’t have a chance to spend too much time in the mid-majors this week here in JIM HURLEY’S HANDICAPPING NOTEBOOK. But, the light Monday schedule lets us check in on…

Wayne Root: Handicapping Tournament Basketball

Friday, March 3, 2017 at 12:00 PM

As I write this Friday morning Las Vegas time, we’re just hours away locally from the start of the West Coast Conference Tournament over at the Orleans Arena. Sure, a few minor tournaments have already started. And, the major conferences don’t really get going until next Tuesday and Wednesday. But, here in the sports betting capital of the world, March Madness arrives TONIGHT because there are tournament games in town. The KING OF LAS VEGAS and the only man in the handicapping industry with a star on the “Walk of Fame” has some thoughts on handicapping tournament basketball I’d like to…

Richie Baccellieri: My Current College Hoop Power Ratings

Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 7:00 PM

March has arrived! I’ve decided to devote my first article of the month to a review of my current college basketball Power Ratings. I’ve talked in the recent past about ways that you can develop your own ratings. Through the month, you can compare your ratings to mine as we study all the tournaments.I’ll also use these for additional context as we cover the Big Dance brackets, and look at how the sharps are betting round by round. You regulars know that college basketball is my favorite sport to watch and handicap. I’m really looking forward to this month!Let’s get…

Network Notebook: TV Preview…#17 Duke at #5 North Carolina

Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 12:00 PM

Yes! March has begun…and the annual season finale for Duke and North Carolina in the ACC Saturday night is a reminder that it’s about to be WALL-TO-WALL BASKETBALL from this point forward in the sports betting world.Hopefully many of you have already jumped into the water since last month’s Super Bowl. But…this is the weekend EVERYONE starts really paying attention. It’s GO TIME in college basketball…and there won’t even be time to come up for air until Final Four week. Will Duke or North Carolina be in the Final Four? How about BOTH?! Let’s see what JIM HURLEY’S key indicator stats…

Richie Baccellieri: Scan the Board for Edges

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 5:00 PM

As I write this up for you, my service selections are 9-2 the last few days. Now, honestly, there’s no way I’m going to maintain THAT pace because nobody can stay at 80-plus percent for very long. We try to grind along and make a run at 55% to 60% over the long haul, hopefully a bit better on the strongest plays. There’s plenty of room to cool off from 82% and still make a profit. But, the list of winners might surprise many of you who are just now gearing up for college hoops because the tournaments are almost here.…

Network Notebook: TV Preview…Michigan at Northwestern

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 1:00 PM

Fortunes can change very quickly in college basketball. Just a few weeks ago, everyone was talking about how Northwestern was a LOCK for the Big Dance…which would make HISTORY because the Wildcats had never crashed the Brackets! Though still in good shape overall, the Wildcats are on the verge of falling onto the bubble if they don’t break a recent skid.By the same token, Michigan was off the radar in terms of being a team that “mattered.” Sure, they were still on TV all the time because of network contracts. But, they were only 4-6 straight up in a Big…

College Hoops: Best Pac 12 Teams

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist    There's the Big 3 in Pac 12 in basketball with a string of teams battling for the top spot, Arizona, Oregon and UCLA.  Here's a look at the strengths and weaknesses of some of college basketball's best teams in the Pacific 12. Arizona:  The Wildcats are a Pac 12 and national powerhouse with exceptional balance, top five in the conference in scoring and points allowed.  7-foot freshman Lauri Markkanen (15 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and fellow 7-footer junior center Dusan Ristic (11.5 ppg, 6 rpg) are a handful in the low post.   Freshmen guards Rawle Alkins (11.8 ppg) and…

Richie Baccellieri: Don’t Trust Poll Rankings for Your Power Ratings

Monday, February 27, 2017 at 5:00 PM

If you’re like most sports bettors…you’re starting to watch A LOT of college basketball on TV now as you gear up for March Madness. Telecasts of marquee matchups always show the current AP poll ranking for each team. Don’t fall into the trap of letting those poll rankings influence how YOU rate the teams!*First of all, it’s a big mistake to think of college basketball teams being on a “ladder” that starts at one and works its way down to 25. There’s so much parity in this sport right now that many of the top teams are fairly even. You…

Inside Wichita State’s 100-Unit Statement Win

Monday, February 27, 2017 at 11:43 AM

I racked up another 100-Unit winner on Saturday when Wichita State (-15) easily handled Missouri State in an 86-67 rout. I wanted to share with you what made the Shockers such a strong play on Saturday, what makes them a potentially value bet going forward and what pitfalls could lead me to reverse course and perhaps go against them if I believe that’s where our money is best invested.Wichita State was a hot basketball team coming into Saturday. They had won eleven games in a row and covered the spread in eight of those contests. They play exceptionally efficient basketball…

Network Notebook: Previewing Monday’s Blockbusters

Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 4:00 PM

It’s another BIG MONDAY in the ESPN family of networks. But, it’s not a blockbuster doubleheader this week. Two great games are on at the same time!7 p.m. ET on ESPN: North Carolina at Virginia7 p.m. ET on ESPNU: West Virginia at BaylorAll four of those teams could end up being seeded for the Sweet 16. It’s not inconceivable that all four of those teams could survive until the Elite Eight once the tournament begins next Month! But, this is definitely a season where any power program is vulnerable to a bad game under playoff pressure.Let’s see what JIM HURLEY’S…

Wayne Root: Gonzaga’s Loss Shows ANYTHING Can Happen!

Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 1:00 PM

The last time we were together, I alerted you to the possibility of upsets in these final days of the college basketball regular season. Then, late Saturday night saw one of the biggest upsets EVER!Number one and previously undefeated Gonzaga fell as a 20-point favorite to BYU. And, that’s after jumping ahead to an 18-2 lead out of the gate! A situation like that has a 99% win rate according to the computers. But, computers still don’t realize how quickly even the best sports teams can lose their focus. Now…that loss may not end up meaning much in the big picture.…

Wayne Root: Be Ready for Late Season Upsets

Friday, February 24, 2017 at 5:00 PM

As the undisputed KING OF UPSETS (more documented upset calls than any other handicapper in history), I want to alert you to a field that’s ripe for the picking right here in the final few days of the college basketall regular season. We are going to see A LOT of upsets between now and the start of postseason tournaments. Why is that? All the top teams are looking ahead to the tournaments! It’s very hard to get young players motivated for relatively meaningless late season games when the excitement of the tournaments is just around the corner. They know the stuff that REALLY…

An Exciting College Basketball Weekend Ahead

Friday, February 24, 2017 at 3:03 PM

We’re coming down the stretch of the college basketball regular season and this weekend has an exciting slate of TV games. I’m handicapping all of these games thoroughly and will be prepared with an excellent package of betting opportunities. I strongly encourage you to join me in the moneymaking In the meantime, here are some of the noteworthy games and factors for all of us to be thinking about regarding the best college basketball games of Saturday and Sunday…Florida-Kentucky (2 PM ET, CBS)I touched on Florida yesterday and this game is a key litmus test of their national championship-readiness. It’s…

Richie Baccellieri: Preparing Your Conference Tourney Power Ratings

Friday, February 24, 2017 at 12:00 PM

If you’re a sports bettor, you’re going to be spending a lot of time the next few days watching great games on TV. Be sure you take advantage of this opportunity to really pin down your Power Ratings in the major conferences so you’re ready for the conference tournaments that begin in early March. You’re probably going to watch Florida/Kentucky Saturday afternoon. Why wouldn’t you?! What would the pointspread be if those two teams met in the SEC Championship game in a couple of weeks? Well, that’s actually pretty easy to figure out. Just look at Saturday’s settled line (once sharps…

Network Notebook: TV Preview…#5 UCLA at #4 Arizona

Friday, February 24, 2017 at 7:00 AM

This could be one of the most fascinating showdowns in the final days of the 2016-17 college basketball regular season. Yes, everyone’s waiting for Duke/North Carolina next week (a game we’ll preview for you right here a week from right now!). But, UCLA/Arizona has something that matchup won’t have...HUGE arguments about how good these teams really are…or AREN’T!Here’s what we mean (note that all computer data in this preview is updated through Wednesday night’s games)… Current Rankings#5 UCLA is #18 at Kenpom, #14 at Sagarin, projected for a #4 seed#4 Arizona is #21 at Kenpom, #20 at Sagarin, projected for a…

The NBA Is Back - Who Is Overpiced and Underpriced

Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 12:01 PM

THE NBA IS BACK - WE WEIGH IN ON THE "VALUES" OUT THERE AND THE "OVERPRICED" TEAMS TOOCOLLEGE BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: THURSDAY'S MARQUEE MATCHUPWelcome back, NBA!The All-Star Game break is in everyone's rear-view mirror by now and so we immediately hit the hoops ground runnin' with Trade Deadline talk - what teams are really gonna be beefing up their roster by 3 p.m. ET today? - and chatter about what's gonna happen in these final seven weeks or so of regular-season play. One thing we've always liked to do is examine what NBA teams may or may not present good "value" from…

Jim Sez: Gotta Have A Win Teams

Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 3:51 PM

THE COLLEGE B-BALL MID-WEEK UPDATE:THE "GOTTA-HAVE-A-WIN TONIGHT" TEAMS ...NFL DRAFT NEWS & NOTES: HOW MANY QUARTERBACKS ARE 1ST-ROUND BOUND?No doubt we're getting your vibes - everyone's getting all hot-and-bothered over the upcoming "brackets" and, sure enough, NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday is just around the corner on March 12th. So just chill! The fact of the matter is the 68-team NCAA Tournament field may already have 40-plus "definites" as we pointed out in our earlier-week Jim Sez column but you better believe there's some real jostling for a handful-plus at-large bids and keeping with this late-season theme we'll concentrate here on a…

Richie Baccellieri: Can You Beat Vegas Fading Bad Teams?

Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 1:00 PM

The last time we were together I talked about how difficult it is to anticipate which teams are going to be great against the pointspread. Even if you find an early surprise, the market will typically adjust fairly quickly. What about the other end of the spectrum? Does it make sense to fade bad teams all through a season? Unfortunately, many of the same issues apply.*Not all teams who are projected to be bad turn out to be bad.*Many of those ugly teams are already on people’s “bet against” list anyway*If you’re ahead of the curve at first, the line should…

How Good Are The Florida Gators?

Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 12:42 PM

The Florida Gators are coming on strong after an 81-66 thumping of South Carolina last night. The Gators have won nine in a row and are set up for a big game at Kentucky on Saturday (2 PM ET, CBS) where they will meet for the lead in the SEC race and to move up in the fight for NCAA Tournament seed position. More importantly, Florida is still a potential value bet in the race for the national championship.Florida is priced at 28-1 to win the NCAA title in Phoenix on April 3. They’re at an interesting spot on the…

Network Notebook: TV Preview…#7 Louisville at #8 N. Carolina

Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 12:00 PM

There are so many good teams in the ACC right now that college basketball fans and sports bettors are treated to marquee matchups on almost a daily basis. Everyone should really be looking forward to Wednesday Night’s class on ESPN featuring #7 Louisville and #8 North Carolina. Those two are currently on the short list of legitimate National Championship threats. Just yesterday, Joe Lunardi of ESPN moved North Carolina up to a #1 seed because of their impressive recent form.Carolina did look great last Saturday when dominating fading Virginia. Louisville has been a money team all season as you’ll see…

Wayne Root: Feast or Famine for the Pac 12?

Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 7:00 AM

Since this is the week that UCLA plays Arizona again (this coming Saturday night on ESPN), let’s check in on what’s been happening in the Pac 12 as we prepare for the coming postseason. You regulars know I pay particular attention to the only major conference with proximity to Las Vegas. It’s been so great having the Pac 12 postseason tournament here in Las Vegas in recent years!March Madness was a relative disaster for the Pac 12 back in 2016. We talked about it a lot at the time. Here’s a quick review. Outside of Oregon…it was HUMILIATING!*Oregon was a…

College Hoops: Best of the SEC 2-21-2017

Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim FeistThe SEC has a bunch of teams loaded with talent, depth and athleticism.  Kentucky won national championships in 1998 and 2012 and the title game in 2014, Florida knocked on the door in 2000 getting to the title game against Michigan State, then won it all with back-to-back titles. Here's a look at some of college basketball's best teams in the SEC.Kentucky: The Wildcats have another powerhouse young team for coach John Calipari, who likes to groom them for one year before they head off to the NBA. The backcourt leads the way for Kentucky with freshmen guards…

Richie Baccellieri: Tough to Beat Vegas “Riding Hot Horses”

Monday, February 20, 2017 at 4:00 PM

Every season there are a relative handful of teams who post excellent records against the Nevada pointspreads. It can be easy for gamblers, after the fact, to start thinking “if only I had been riding those teams since the beginning of the season, I’d have made a fortune.”While technically true, it’s virtually impossible to anticipate in advance who those teams are going to be. First, nobody’s psychic. Second, oddsmakers and sharps tend to react quickly to teams who consistently play better than expected out of the gate. So, the strategy of “riding a hot horse” through the whole season is…

The New-Look New Orleans Pelicans

Monday, February 20, 2017 at 1:42 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans were certainly the story of All-Star weekend, and not just because they hosted the event and Anthony Davis went off for a record 52 points in last night’s defensively-challenged display. The Pelicans made the league’s big move off the court as well, acquiring Demarcus Cousins from Sacramento in exchange for a modest package highlighted by rookie shooter Buddy Hield. Talk in the media was alive this morning that the Pelicans are on their way to the playoffs and even that Golden State needs to be concerned about a potential 1 vs. 8 matchup in the first…

Network Notebook: NCAA TV Preview…S. Carolina at Florida

Monday, February 20, 2017 at 12:00 PM

College basketball fans have gotten used to thinking of the SEC as “Kentucky and a Bunch of Dwarfs.” But, Florida and South Carolina are definitely threats to make headlines in March. Florida already did that in February with a huge home win over Kentucky!Heading into Tuesday Night’s huge TV matchup featuring South Carolina at Florida…the Gators hold a tie-breaker lead over Kentucky at the top of the SEC standings (both 12-2). South Carolina is in third place, just two games back. Can the Gamecocks make it a three-way race? Let’s see what JIM HURLEY’S key indicators stats have to say!…

Jim Sez First Half NBA Report Cards - West

Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 10:31 AM

NBA REPORTS CARDS - HERE'S THE WESTERN CONFERENCEOne thing about the unofficial first half of this 2016-17 NBA season ... there are lots of teams that haven't exactly "stepped up to the plate" as our Jim Sez NBA Eastern Conference Report Cards included a half-dozen squads with marks of C- or worse. Ugh!Now, as you'll see in today's column space where we have graded the NBA's Western Conference clubs, there are another six teams that get what we'd call inferior marks. The NBA has superstar power on display this weekend in New Orleans but there's some real dreg teams out there…

Richie Baccellieri: Get Ready for A Lot of Pick-em Games!

Friday, February 17, 2017 at 2:00 PM

One thing that’s become crystal clear within the past few weeks is that late season college basketball and the postseason tournaments are going to feature a lot of toss-ups. There are no obvious superpowers this season. Members of the elite tier of teams are hard to differentiate. In fact, you still see a lot of disagreement between the various computers, the polls, the selection committee, and betting market Power Ratings even though we’re past mid-February!Things are supposed to be sorted out by now. But…that’s the deal. Things HAVE sorted out and THIS is the way it’s going to be. Everyone…

Jim Sez NBA First Half Report Cards - East

Friday, February 17, 2017 at 11:40 AM

IT'S OUR NBA FIRST-HALF REPORT CARD GRADES - TODAY'S THE EASTERN CONFERENCEWanna have a little fun?Add up the first-half-of-the-season records for the last two NBA champions - the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors - and you get a composite won/loss mark of 86-25 (a sizzling .775 winning rate).Needless to say, the Cavs and "Dubs" once again appear to be on a collision course to meet in this year's NBA Finals for a third consecutive June but does that mean they're the only ones getting "straight A's" from the staff here at Jim Sez?Hey, we'll answer that beginning with…

Network Notebook: Another Great Superpower Showcase

Friday, February 17, 2017 at 7:00 AM

The buzz has really started to build for what’s shaping up as very exciting MARCH MADNESS melodrama in 2017. This Saturday’s schedule features two more head-to-head TV showcases involving teams that are expected to be serious championship contenders next month. Last Saturday, Gonzaga and Villanova passed what were expected to be challenging road tests (didn’t turn out that way!). They stay high atop the short list. What about these next four powers…#3 Kansas at #4 Baylor, 1 p.m. ET on CBS,#14 Virginia at #10 North Carolina 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN(Note that Virginia/North Carolina has been time-changed to prime time…

Wayne Root: Is Stage Set for an Off-the-Radar Dance Shocker?

Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 3:00 PM

Because all of the current powers in college basketball have at least one exploitable weakness, 2017 could be a year where an off-the-radar team gets hot in March and pulls off a SHOCK THE NATION championship run.If the tournament were being held right now, a team like Oklahoma State would seem to be the ideal candidate. The Cowboys won for me as a PERFECT PLAY Wednesday night on the road at TCU. You could make the case that nobody’s playing better basketball over the past few weeks than Okie State. In their last 8 games…Oklahoma State (+6.5) won at Texas…

Richie Baccellieri: How Sharps Grind Out Profit

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 5:00 PM

The heart of college basketball season is a great time to review how sharps (professional wagerers) make their living. Too many casual bettors have a “big score” or a “get rich quick” mentality. Sharp betting in the modern era is much more about playing every edge you can find as you grind out a profit with something even as conservative as a 53-55% win rate. Build your wealth slowly and surely rather than letting everything ride on one or two big bets. Now, don’t get me wrong. Sharps do make some big bets! But those are relatively rare because:*The softest lines…

Don’t Hand James Harden The MVP Just Yet

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 4:43 PM

James Harden has pulled out to a decisive lead in the race to be NBA MVP, at least if we measure the race by the sentiments of the betting market. Harden is the (-110) favorite, having surpassed Russell Westbrook, who now sits at (+125). There may be money to made in this race for the NBA’s highest individual honor.Make no mistake—if the season ends today, Harden is a slam-dunk choice for MVP. He’s averaging 29ppg. That’s impressive enough on its face, but it’s also expected from Harden. What hasn’t been expected is the improved rebounding he’s offered from the two-guard…

Network Notebook: NCAA TV Preview…Wisconsin at Michigan

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 12:00 PM

Wisconsin is embarrassed that they didn’t qualify for any of the top 16 seeds in the first national “unveiling” of the tournament committee’s rankings last week…and REALLY embarrassed about losing soon after to Northwestern as 11-point favorites!Michigan is embarrassed to be seen nationally as a “bubble” team given the recent history of the program. Though, an impressive win over Indiana at least pushed them aggressively to the right side of the bubble.Wisconsin visits Michigan Thursday night on ESPN in a game that could loom very large over potential tournament seedings the rest of the way. Both have to shine! If…

Jim Sez Mid Week Update

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 11:56 AM

THE COLLEGE B-BALL MID-WEEK UPDATEYOU ASKED FOR IT, YOU GOT AS WE GET YOU THE SEASON'S FIRST LOOK AT "BUBBLE TEAMS"PLUS NBA POINTSPREAD NEWS/NOTESHey, NCAA Tournament Committee folks, your job is gonna be tougher than ever this year when it comes to sorting through the final at-large teams. No doubt one of the real dilemmas for the committee is do you reward top-of-the-line mid-major squads ... or do teams finishing in the back-half of their major-conference standings get the nod instead? For years and years, we've offered up our opinion here at Jim Sez ... let's get more mid-major teams into the…

College Hoops: Best Big 10 Teams

Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist    A Big 10 representative hasn't won college basketball 's national championship since 2000 (Michigan State), but Indiana got to the title game in 2002, as did Illinois (2005), Ohio State (2007), MSU (2009), Michigan (2013) and Wisconsin (2015), so they've been knocking on the door. Here's a look at some of the best of the Big 10 with the March tournaments on the horizon.  Maryland: The Terrapins have star power behind junior guard Melo Trimble (17 ppg), 6-7 freshman Justin Jackson (11 ppg) and freshman guard Anthony Cowan (11 ppg). They are in the Big 10's Top 5…

Wayne Root: Can Gonzaga Shock the Nation in Big Dance?

Monday, February 13, 2017 at 4:00 PM

It’s very odd to ask this about a team that’s undefeated in mid-February, and is very likely to be a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament next month. But, because Gonzaga continues to be so DIS-RESPECTED by the national media and oddsmakers….I have to ask…can Gonzaga shock the nation in the Big Dance and win a national championship? You see…Gonzaga isn’t thought of as a “real” threat to go the distance because they play such a weak regular season schedule. The West Coast Conference is pretty pathetic these days. Nobody there is capable of scaring Gonzaga any more. I, myself, thought…

Richie Baccellieri: Big 10 Embarrassed by Seed Projections

Monday, February 13, 2017 at 12:00 PM

There wasn’t nearly as much hype for the “unveiling” of early NCAA basketball tournament seed projections this past Saturday as there was back during football for the weekly Final Four standings. But, fans and bettors here in Nevada were certainly paying attention. Amongst sharps and oddsmakers, the biggest surprises seemed to be…*Gonzaga only being the fourth rated #1 seed heading into their game at St. Mary’s (it was assumed an undefeated team with some good non-conference wins would sit at the very top!)*No teams from the Big 10 registering in the top 16 teams.Sure, it’s a down year for the…

Duke Discrepancy Highlights Top 16 NCAA Seeds Release

Monday, February 13, 2017 at 11:00 AM

The NCAA Selection Committee took a page from their football brethren this weekend and released what the national top 16 seeds in the coming NCAA Tournament would be if the bracket had to be made today. As you can expect, there were some areas where opinions differed significantly from the numbers posted in Las Vegas. And as you can expect, the Duke Blue Devils were at the heart of the discrepancy.Duke has started to play better basketball of late, winning five in a row. That includes a victory at Notre Dame and last week’s high-profile home win over North Carolina.…

Network Notebook: NCAA TV Preview…W. Virginia at Kansas

Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 12:00 PM

There just isn’t one SUPER-TEAM this year in college basketball that’s likely to run roughshod over the Big Dance next month. All the major conferences have at least a few teams capable of getting hot and running the table. The loaded Big 12 has more than a few! Two of those square off again Monday night when West Virginia visits Kansas in a rematch that all college basketball fans should be watching very closely. Here’s what happened in the first meeting in Morgantown a few weeks ago… West Virginia 85, Kansas 69Two-Point Shooting: Kansas 40%, West Virginia 53%Three-Pointers: Kansas 13/29, West Virginia…

The Washington Wizards May Glitter But They Haven’t Been Gold

Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 8:38 AM

The Washington Wizards are on the move in the NBA’s Eastern Conference playoff race. The Wizards have won 16 of their last 19 and moved into the #3 spot in the East. That stretch of games includes wins over Boston and Atlanta, two teams Washington is jousting directly with for playoff position in the battle to be the prime challenger to Cleveland. And speaking of the Cavs...the Wizards took LeBron & Co to overtime on Monday before dropping a thrilling 140-135 final. All that glitters isn’t necessarily gold though, especially in the cutthroat world of NBA betting that I’ve navigated for…

Jim Sez College Basketball Report

Friday, February 10, 2017 at 1:20 PM

THE COLLEGE ROUNDBALL REPORT NO ONE'S ASKING BUT HERE'S OUR "#1 SEEDS" FOR NEXT MONTH'S NCAA TOURNAMENT THE NBA NOTEBOOK: TRADES WE'D LIKE TO SEE BEFORE THE DEADLINEGuess it all depends on the "eyes of the beholder":After all, some college basketball folks believe that the real cream-of-the-crop teams this year - such as #1 Gonzaga (now 25-0 following last night's 90-60 romp at 17-point pup Loyola-Marymount) and defending champion #2 Villanova - may not be as good as some of those other teams in power conferences. In other words, is the loaded Pac-12 - a league that includes three top 10…

Network Notebook: #1 Gonzaga, #2 Villanova Face Big Road Tests

Friday, February 10, 2017 at 12:00 PM

The top two college basketball teams in the country will face very tough tests Saturday when #1 Gonzaga visits #20 St. Mary’s (8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN) and #2 Villanova travels to #24 Xavier (2:30 p.m. ET on FOX).That will be the toughest game of the season for Gonzaga until the NCA Tournament (possibly until the Sweet 16 round of the Dance!). Villanova is in a tougher conference…but won’t have any taller mountains to climb in the Big East than a road battle against the Muscateers (who are currently second in the league standings).Let’s run JIM HURLEY’S key indicator stats…

Richie Baccellieri: Kentucky a Conundrum for Oddsmakers

Friday, February 10, 2017 at 7:00 AM

The surprising fade of the Kentucky Wildcats is causing headaches for oddsmakers here in Nevada and offshore. It’s not a disaster for the bottom line because the public tends to bet Kentucky year-after-year. But, how is the market supposed to price a team that’s suddenly playing nowhere near expectations? If you’ve been watching TV games now that the nation’s sports betting attention is on college hoops after the Super Bowl…you surely know that Kentucky’s struggling. But, did you realize that they’ve just missed the spread by DOUBLE DIGITS at the end of regulation for FIVE GAMES IN A ROW?!Kentucky (-25) only…

Wayne Root: The Knicks are Imploding Before Our Eyes

Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 3:00 PM

Things were going bad enough for the New York Knicks even before they made the wrong kind of headlines Wednesday Night. Sure, they lost (again) to the Los Angeles Clippers in a national TV game on ESPN. But, everybody was talking about what happened to Charles Oakley in the stands and in the tunnel. You’ve probably read all about it already. James Dolan had his security team go after a legendary NBA enforcer and fan favorite with predictable results. Charles Oakley is the one guy nobody should mess with! The media has been all over it. And, they’re going to be…

Wichita State Basketball Aims For Another March Run

Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 1:54 PM

Wichita State basketball has been front and center for some moneymaking opportunities in March the past several years. The Shockers were a value play in years like 2013, when they made the Final Four or 2015, when they upset Kansas and made the Sweet 16. Or even last year when they started in the play-in round and won two games. And on the flip side, there was money to be made in 2014 going against a then-undefeated Wichita team in a marquee Round of 32 game against Kentucky. The bottom line? Make sure you have a handle on the Shockers. This…

College Hoops: Best the ACC

Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist    The ACC is a basketball powerhouse again despite an erratic year from Duke team. After all, the Blue Devils won national titles in 2015 and 2010, with North Carolina copping a championship in 2009 and getting to the title game last season. Here's a look at some of the best of the ACC with the tournament time on the horizon.North Carolina: Roy Williams has another talented team that crushed Wisconsin in an early season showdown, 71-56.  Junior guard Joel Berry (14.8 ppg) run the break while 6-8 junior Justin Jackson (18.7 ppg), 6-10 senior Kennedy Meeks (12.7…

Be Cautious When Betting Oregon Basketball

Monday, February 6, 2017 at 6:03 PM

The Oregon Ducks are flying high after an 85-58 dismantling of Arizona this weekend. The Ducks are tied with the Wildcats for first place in the Pac-12 and will surely move into the Top 10 in the polls when new rankings come out. They’re projected for a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN bracket guru Joe Lunardi. All is good in Eugene, but that doesn’t mean college basketball bettors can jump blindly on the bandwagon.Let’s start with the positives. Oregon is an exceptionally well-balanced team. They have five players scoring in double-figures and the per-game averages range closely from…

What The Film Says About Super Bowl LI

Friday, February 3, 2017 at 4:40 PM

The quarterback matchup for Super Bowl LI is fantastic. The storyline of the league’s top offense (Atlanta) facing it’s best defense (New England) is compelling. Tom Brady’s chase for history and Matt Ryan’s quest for vindication are enough to make anyone watch. But for those of interested in turning the Patriots-Falcons Super Bowl matchup (6:30 PM ET, Fox) into money there are other great personnel battles that will make a big difference in determining who wins and who covers.Atlanta’s defense has come on, both down the stretch and in the NFC playoffs. They’ve used edge pressure to completely disrupt two…

Maryland Basketball Faces Key Stretch

Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 12:18 PM

The Maryland Terrapins are 20-2 and tied for first in the Big Ten with Wisconsin, each two games ahead of the field. Yet the Terps aren’t getting a lot of respect, be it from the pollsters or the bookmakers. They’ve spent much of the year unranked and even now are only #17 in the polls. Las Vegas has Maryland priced at 52-1 to win the NCAA title. By comparison, Wisconsin is 27-1. Purdue is 40-1 while trailing the Terps by two games. Maryland’s price is closer to that of underachieving Indiana at 65-1, then it is to Wisconsin, much less…
