Richie Baccellieri: Tough to Beat Vegas “Riding Hot Horses”

Monday, February 20, 2017 at 4:00 PM

Every season there are a relative handful of teams who post excellent records against the Nevada pointspreads. It can be easy for gamblers, after the fact, to start thinking “if only I had been riding those teams since the beginning of the season, I’d have made a fortune.”While technically true, it’s virtually impossible to anticipate in advance who those teams are going to be. First, nobody’s psychic. Second, oddsmakers and sharps tend to react quickly to teams who consistently play better than expected out of the gate. So, the strategy of “riding a hot horse” through the whole season is…

The New-Look New Orleans Pelicans

Monday, February 20, 2017 at 1:42 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans were certainly the story of All-Star weekend, and not just because they hosted the event and Anthony Davis went off for a record 52 points in last night’s defensively-challenged display. The Pelicans made the league’s big move off the court as well, acquiring Demarcus Cousins from Sacramento in exchange for a modest package highlighted by rookie shooter Buddy Hield. Talk in the media was alive this morning that the Pelicans are on their way to the playoffs and even that Golden State needs to be concerned about a potential 1 vs. 8 matchup in the first…

Network Notebook: NCAA TV Preview…S. Carolina at Florida

Monday, February 20, 2017 at 12:00 PM

College basketball fans have gotten used to thinking of the SEC as “Kentucky and a Bunch of Dwarfs.” But, Florida and South Carolina are definitely threats to make headlines in March. Florida already did that in February with a huge home win over Kentucky!Heading into Tuesday Night’s huge TV matchup featuring South Carolina at Florida…the Gators hold a tie-breaker lead over Kentucky at the top of the SEC standings (both 12-2). South Carolina is in third place, just two games back. Can the Gamecocks make it a three-way race? Let’s see what JIM HURLEY’S key indicators stats have to say!…

Jim Sez First Half NBA Report Cards - West

Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 10:31 AM

NBA REPORTS CARDS - HERE'S THE WESTERN CONFERENCEOne thing about the unofficial first half of this 2016-17 NBA season ... there are lots of teams that haven't exactly "stepped up to the plate" as our Jim Sez NBA Eastern Conference Report Cards included a half-dozen squads with marks of C- or worse. Ugh!Now, as you'll see in today's column space where we have graded the NBA's Western Conference clubs, there are another six teams that get what we'd call inferior marks. The NBA has superstar power on display this weekend in New Orleans but there's some real dreg teams out there…

Richie Baccellieri: Get Ready for A Lot of Pick-em Games!

Friday, February 17, 2017 at 2:00 PM

One thing that’s become crystal clear within the past few weeks is that late season college basketball and the postseason tournaments are going to feature a lot of toss-ups. There are no obvious superpowers this season. Members of the elite tier of teams are hard to differentiate. In fact, you still see a lot of disagreement between the various computers, the polls, the selection committee, and betting market Power Ratings even though we’re past mid-February!Things are supposed to be sorted out by now. But…that’s the deal. Things HAVE sorted out and THIS is the way it’s going to be. Everyone…

Jim Sez NBA First Half Report Cards - East

Friday, February 17, 2017 at 11:40 AM

IT'S OUR NBA FIRST-HALF REPORT CARD GRADES - TODAY'S THE EASTERN CONFERENCEWanna have a little fun?Add up the first-half-of-the-season records for the last two NBA champions - the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors - and you get a composite won/loss mark of 86-25 (a sizzling .775 winning rate).Needless to say, the Cavs and "Dubs" once again appear to be on a collision course to meet in this year's NBA Finals for a third consecutive June but does that mean they're the only ones getting "straight A's" from the staff here at Jim Sez?Hey, we'll answer that beginning with…

Network Notebook: Another Great Superpower Showcase

Friday, February 17, 2017 at 7:00 AM

The buzz has really started to build for what’s shaping up as very exciting MARCH MADNESS melodrama in 2017. This Saturday’s schedule features two more head-to-head TV showcases involving teams that are expected to be serious championship contenders next month. Last Saturday, Gonzaga and Villanova passed what were expected to be challenging road tests (didn’t turn out that way!). They stay high atop the short list. What about these next four powers…#3 Kansas at #4 Baylor, 1 p.m. ET on CBS,#14 Virginia at #10 North Carolina 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN(Note that Virginia/North Carolina has been time-changed to prime time…

Wayne Root: Is Stage Set for an Off-the-Radar Dance Shocker?

Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 3:00 PM

Because all of the current powers in college basketball have at least one exploitable weakness, 2017 could be a year where an off-the-radar team gets hot in March and pulls off a SHOCK THE NATION championship run.If the tournament were being held right now, a team like Oklahoma State would seem to be the ideal candidate. The Cowboys won for me as a PERFECT PLAY Wednesday night on the road at TCU. You could make the case that nobody’s playing better basketball over the past few weeks than Okie State. In their last 8 games…Oklahoma State (+6.5) won at Texas…

Richie Baccellieri: How Sharps Grind Out Profit

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 5:00 PM

The heart of college basketball season is a great time to review how sharps (professional wagerers) make their living. Too many casual bettors have a “big score” or a “get rich quick” mentality. Sharp betting in the modern era is much more about playing every edge you can find as you grind out a profit with something even as conservative as a 53-55% win rate. Build your wealth slowly and surely rather than letting everything ride on one or two big bets. Now, don’t get me wrong. Sharps do make some big bets! But those are relatively rare because:*The softest lines…

Don’t Hand James Harden The MVP Just Yet

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 4:43 PM

James Harden has pulled out to a decisive lead in the race to be NBA MVP, at least if we measure the race by the sentiments of the betting market. Harden is the (-110) favorite, having surpassed Russell Westbrook, who now sits at (+125). There may be money to made in this race for the NBA’s highest individual honor.Make no mistake—if the season ends today, Harden is a slam-dunk choice for MVP. He’s averaging 29ppg. That’s impressive enough on its face, but it’s also expected from Harden. What hasn’t been expected is the improved rebounding he’s offered from the two-guard…

Network Notebook: NCAA TV Preview…Wisconsin at Michigan

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 12:00 PM

Wisconsin is embarrassed that they didn’t qualify for any of the top 16 seeds in the first national “unveiling” of the tournament committee’s rankings last week…and REALLY embarrassed about losing soon after to Northwestern as 11-point favorites!Michigan is embarrassed to be seen nationally as a “bubble” team given the recent history of the program. Though, an impressive win over Indiana at least pushed them aggressively to the right side of the bubble.Wisconsin visits Michigan Thursday night on ESPN in a game that could loom very large over potential tournament seedings the rest of the way. Both have to shine! If…

THE COLLEGE B-BALL MID-WEEK UPDATEYOU ASKED FOR IT, YOU GOT AS WE GET YOU THE SEASON'S FIRST LOOK AT "BUBBLE TEAMS"PLUS NBA POINTSPREAD NEWS/NOTESHey, NCAA Tournament Committee folks, your job is gonna be tougher than ever this year when it comes to sorting through the final at-large teams. No doubt one of the real dilemmas for the committee is do you reward top-of-the-line mid-major squads ... or do teams finishing in the back-half of their major-conference standings get the nod instead? For years and years, we've offered up our opinion here at Jim Sez ... let's get more mid-major teams into the…

College Hoops: Best Big 10 Teams

Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist    A Big 10 representative hasn't won college basketball 's national championship since 2000 (Michigan State), but Indiana got to the title game in 2002, as did Illinois (2005), Ohio State (2007), MSU (2009), Michigan (2013) and Wisconsin (2015), so they've been knocking on the door. Here's a look at some of the best of the Big 10 with the March tournaments on the horizon.  Maryland: The Terrapins have star power behind junior guard Melo Trimble (17 ppg), 6-7 freshman Justin Jackson (11 ppg) and freshman guard Anthony Cowan (11 ppg). They are in the Big 10's Top 5…

Wayne Root: Can Gonzaga Shock the Nation in Big Dance?

Monday, February 13, 2017 at 4:00 PM

It’s very odd to ask this about a team that’s undefeated in mid-February, and is very likely to be a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament next month. But, because Gonzaga continues to be so DIS-RESPECTED by the national media and oddsmakers….I have to ask…can Gonzaga shock the nation in the Big Dance and win a national championship? You see…Gonzaga isn’t thought of as a “real” threat to go the distance because they play such a weak regular season schedule. The West Coast Conference is pretty pathetic these days. Nobody there is capable of scaring Gonzaga any more. I, myself, thought…

Richie Baccellieri: Big 10 Embarrassed by Seed Projections

Monday, February 13, 2017 at 12:00 PM

There wasn’t nearly as much hype for the “unveiling” of early NCAA basketball tournament seed projections this past Saturday as there was back during football for the weekly Final Four standings. But, fans and bettors here in Nevada were certainly paying attention. Amongst sharps and oddsmakers, the biggest surprises seemed to be…*Gonzaga only being the fourth rated #1 seed heading into their game at St. Mary’s (it was assumed an undefeated team with some good non-conference wins would sit at the very top!)*No teams from the Big 10 registering in the top 16 teams.Sure, it’s a down year for the…

Duke Discrepancy Highlights Top 16 NCAA Seeds Release

Monday, February 13, 2017 at 11:00 AM

The NCAA Selection Committee took a page from their football brethren this weekend and released what the national top 16 seeds in the coming NCAA Tournament would be if the bracket had to be made today. As you can expect, there were some areas where opinions differed significantly from the numbers posted in Las Vegas. And as you can expect, the Duke Blue Devils were at the heart of the discrepancy.Duke has started to play better basketball of late, winning five in a row. That includes a victory at Notre Dame and last week’s high-profile home win over North Carolina.…

Network Notebook: NCAA TV Preview…W. Virginia at Kansas

Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 12:00 PM

There just isn’t one SUPER-TEAM this year in college basketball that’s likely to run roughshod over the Big Dance next month. All the major conferences have at least a few teams capable of getting hot and running the table. The loaded Big 12 has more than a few! Two of those square off again Monday night when West Virginia visits Kansas in a rematch that all college basketball fans should be watching very closely. Here’s what happened in the first meeting in Morgantown a few weeks ago… West Virginia 85, Kansas 69Two-Point Shooting: Kansas 40%, West Virginia 53%Three-Pointers: Kansas 13/29, West Virginia…

The Washington Wizards May Glitter But They Haven’t Been Gold

Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 8:38 AM

The Washington Wizards are on the move in the NBA’s Eastern Conference playoff race. The Wizards have won 16 of their last 19 and moved into the #3 spot in the East. That stretch of games includes wins over Boston and Atlanta, two teams Washington is jousting directly with for playoff position in the battle to be the prime challenger to Cleveland. And speaking of the Cavs...the Wizards took LeBron & Co to overtime on Monday before dropping a thrilling 140-135 final. All that glitters isn’t necessarily gold though, especially in the cutthroat world of NBA betting that I’ve navigated for…

Jim Sez College Basketball Report

Friday, February 10, 2017 at 1:20 PM

THE COLLEGE ROUNDBALL REPORT NO ONE'S ASKING BUT HERE'S OUR "#1 SEEDS" FOR NEXT MONTH'S NCAA TOURNAMENT THE NBA NOTEBOOK: TRADES WE'D LIKE TO SEE BEFORE THE DEADLINEGuess it all depends on the "eyes of the beholder":After all, some college basketball folks believe that the real cream-of-the-crop teams this year - such as #1 Gonzaga (now 25-0 following last night's 90-60 romp at 17-point pup Loyola-Marymount) and defending champion #2 Villanova - may not be as good as some of those other teams in power conferences. In other words, is the loaded Pac-12 - a league that includes three top 10…

Network Notebook: #1 Gonzaga, #2 Villanova Face Big Road Tests

Friday, February 10, 2017 at 12:00 PM

The top two college basketball teams in the country will face very tough tests Saturday when #1 Gonzaga visits #20 St. Mary’s (8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN) and #2 Villanova travels to #24 Xavier (2:30 p.m. ET on FOX).That will be the toughest game of the season for Gonzaga until the NCA Tournament (possibly until the Sweet 16 round of the Dance!). Villanova is in a tougher conference…but won’t have any taller mountains to climb in the Big East than a road battle against the Muscateers (who are currently second in the league standings).Let’s run JIM HURLEY’S key indicator stats…

Richie Baccellieri: Kentucky a Conundrum for Oddsmakers

Friday, February 10, 2017 at 7:00 AM

The surprising fade of the Kentucky Wildcats is causing headaches for oddsmakers here in Nevada and offshore. It’s not a disaster for the bottom line because the public tends to bet Kentucky year-after-year. But, how is the market supposed to price a team that’s suddenly playing nowhere near expectations? If you’ve been watching TV games now that the nation’s sports betting attention is on college hoops after the Super Bowl…you surely know that Kentucky’s struggling. But, did you realize that they’ve just missed the spread by DOUBLE DIGITS at the end of regulation for FIVE GAMES IN A ROW?!Kentucky (-25) only…

Wayne Root: The Knicks are Imploding Before Our Eyes

Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 3:00 PM

Things were going bad enough for the New York Knicks even before they made the wrong kind of headlines Wednesday Night. Sure, they lost (again) to the Los Angeles Clippers in a national TV game on ESPN. But, everybody was talking about what happened to Charles Oakley in the stands and in the tunnel. You’ve probably read all about it already. James Dolan had his security team go after a legendary NBA enforcer and fan favorite with predictable results. Charles Oakley is the one guy nobody should mess with! The media has been all over it. And, they’re going to be…

Wichita State Basketball Aims For Another March Run

Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 1:54 PM

Wichita State basketball has been front and center for some moneymaking opportunities in March the past several years. The Shockers were a value play in years like 2013, when they made the Final Four or 2015, when they upset Kansas and made the Sweet 16. Or even last year when they started in the play-in round and won two games. And on the flip side, there was money to be made in 2014 going against a then-undefeated Wichita team in a marquee Round of 32 game against Kentucky. The bottom line? Make sure you have a handle on the Shockers. This…

College Hoops: Best the ACC

Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist    The ACC is a basketball powerhouse again despite an erratic year from Duke team. After all, the Blue Devils won national titles in 2015 and 2010, with North Carolina copping a championship in 2009 and getting to the title game last season. Here's a look at some of the best of the ACC with the tournament time on the horizon.North Carolina: Roy Williams has another talented team that crushed Wisconsin in an early season showdown, 71-56.  Junior guard Joel Berry (14.8 ppg) run the break while 6-8 junior Justin Jackson (18.7 ppg), 6-10 senior Kennedy Meeks (12.7…

Be Cautious When Betting Oregon Basketball

Monday, February 6, 2017 at 6:03 PM

The Oregon Ducks are flying high after an 85-58 dismantling of Arizona this weekend. The Ducks are tied with the Wildcats for first place in the Pac-12 and will surely move into the Top 10 in the polls when new rankings come out. They’re projected for a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN bracket guru Joe Lunardi. All is good in Eugene, but that doesn’t mean college basketball bettors can jump blindly on the bandwagon.Let’s start with the positives. Oregon is an exceptionally well-balanced team. They have five players scoring in double-figures and the per-game averages range closely from…

What The Film Says About Super Bowl LI

Friday, February 3, 2017 at 4:40 PM

The quarterback matchup for Super Bowl LI is fantastic. The storyline of the league’s top offense (Atlanta) facing it’s best defense (New England) is compelling. Tom Brady’s chase for history and Matt Ryan’s quest for vindication are enough to make anyone watch. But for those of interested in turning the Patriots-Falcons Super Bowl matchup (6:30 PM ET, Fox) into money there are other great personnel battles that will make a big difference in determining who wins and who covers.Atlanta’s defense has come on, both down the stretch and in the NFC playoffs. They’ve used edge pressure to completely disrupt two…

Maryland Basketball Faces Key Stretch

Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 12:18 PM

The Maryland Terrapins are 20-2 and tied for first in the Big Ten with Wisconsin, each two games ahead of the field. Yet the Terps aren’t getting a lot of respect, be it from the pollsters or the bookmakers. They’ve spent much of the year unranked and even now are only #17 in the polls. Las Vegas has Maryland priced at 52-1 to win the NCAA title. By comparison, Wisconsin is 27-1. Purdue is 40-1 while trailing the Terps by two games. Maryland’s price is closer to that of underachieving Indiana at 65-1, then it is to Wisconsin, much less…

Could The Minnesota Timberwolves Be A Moneymaker?

Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 3:00 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves are only 19-29 as they come into tonight’s nationally televised game with the Cleveland Cavaliers (7 PM ET, ESPN). The T-Wolves’ record against the spread is only marginally better, at 21-27. But recent form says something else. Over the last eight games, Minnesota is 6-2, straight-up 5-3 ATS and there’s every reason to believe that this team is rounding into form for last 2 ½ months of the regular season. The Timberwolves are an exceptionally young team, with three 21-year-olds all playing significant minutes. And two of those kids, Karl Anthony-Towns and Andrew Wiggins, are easily the two…

Super Sunday!

Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist  What a difference a year makes! Last year the Super Bowl pitted two talented defenses, with the Denver Broncos triumphing under a barrage of sacks on MVP Cam Newton. This year it's a pair of ace quarterbacks in Matt Ryan and Tom Brady leading high octane passing attacks.    It's a change of pace as defense certainly has led the way of late.  Denver last year, the Patriots two years ago coming up with a goal-line stand with Malcolm Butler's interception and Seattle's crushing defense taking apart Peyton Manning's record setting offense three years ago.   This is…

Inside The Marquette Basketball Roller-Coaster

Monday, January 30, 2017 at 12:23 PM

On the surface, Marquette basketball looks like a banal, middling program. They’re projected as an 8-seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. They’re 10-10-1 against the spread. That all screams “middle of the road.” But the path the Golden Eagles take to the middle of the road is unpredictable, with all the opportunities for moneymaking that chaos provides. The events of the past nine days tell the story. Marquette went to Creighton as a (+6) dog and came home with a 102-94 outright upset. Last Tuesday, the Golden Eagles hosted #1-ranked Villanova and as a (+5) dog, pulled off…

The Philadelphia 76ers Are No Longer An NBA Joke

Friday, January 27, 2017 at 9:45 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers have been the butt of jokes in the NBA for several years now, as they’ve deliberately tanked seasons to get high draft picks. The 76ers have been below 20 wins per year each season since the strike-shortened year of 2012. They haven’t had a winning season in a full 82-game schedule since 2005. That latter streak likely won’t change this year, but at 17-27, the 76ers are moving back to respectability. And, from the standpoint of an NBA bettor they’ve turned into a profitable investment.Philadelphia is 26-17-1 against the spread and have been particularly tough at home,…

Can Northwestern Basketball Stay A Moneymaker?

Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 1:58 PM

Northwestern basketball has been in existence since 1904 and they’ve never made the NCAA Tournament. This year’s Wildcats team has the look of one set to make history—they’re 16-4, projected as a 7-seed by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi if the bracket were released today and they’re even in the mix for the Big Ten championship.More important for college basketball bettors, Northwestern has been a moneymaker. Their ATS record is a profitable 12-4-1, They’ve been especially tough to handle in Evanston where they’ve covered the number twelve times in fourteen games and they even offer the edge of being somewhat predictable—their games…

Florida State Basketball Looks To Take The Next Step

Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 1:46 PM

Florida State basketball has traditionally taken a back seat to the school’s more powerful football program, but this year’s Seminole hoops squad has spent the early part of the ACC schedule letting the country know they’re a threat to be in Phoenix for the Final Four come April.FSU’s 18-2 record overall, 6-1 in the conference, is impressive enough on its face. Then you look at who they’ve beaten—a win at Virginia, and three more home Ws against Duke, Notre Dame and Louisville. The only ACC loss is at North Carolina. If you look at the non-conference resume, there’s a win…

In this case, it's two weeks, as the teams have two weeks to prepare for the Big Game.  For example, you can bet on the exact score of the game by each team, who will score first, or how many yards a player has.  A common prop on all the NFL playoff games is "The shortest TD will be over/under 1.5 yards." If you had OVER in the Super Bowl two years ago you would have been pulling your hair out after Pete Carroll/Darrell…

Arizona Basketball Aims For Final Four Breakthrough

Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 5:37 PM

Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller carries with him the somewhat dubious reputation of the best coach to never reach the Final Four. I suppose there’s worse things one could be called since this presumes Miller is an awfully good coach to begin with. But those four career losses in the regional finals, three since coming to Arizona in 2010, undoubtedly rankle. Miller’s young 2017 basketball team sent the country a loud and clear message that they might be the ones to break through. The Wildcats went to UCLA on Saturday and not only won, but did do decisively, 96-85. The win…

IT'S FINALLY HERE - THE NFC & AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES TAKE CENTER STAGE ON SUNDAYOkay, so if this was one of those old Sesame Street shows where they asked you "which one didn't belong" you'd go straight to QB Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons, right? After all, here we are on the brink of NFL Championship Games Sunday and the other teams - the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots on the AFC side, the Green Bay Packers on the NFC side - all are "regulars" when it comes to playing for a Super Bowl berth. In fact, go back the…

What The Film Says About NFL Championship Sunday

Friday, January 20, 2017 at 8:08 PM

Championship Sunday is almost here. We know about the big storylines—Aaron Rodgers looking to secure his legacy with a second Super Bowl appearance, with Matt Ryan trying to build a legacy by getting there for the first time. Or two great organizations in the Steelers and Patriots, with a couple future Hall of Fame quarterbacks looking to get yet another ring. Those stories and a few more are in the media every day. But there are some more subtle battles taking place that a careful review of game film shows, and those battles will also play a big part in deciding…

OUR AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PREVIEW:STEELERS-PATRIOTS SQUARE OFF SUNDAY WITH SUPER BOWL LI BERTH ON THE LINEGeez, enough of this social media nonsense that’s dominated the week-long headlines leading into this otherwise fascinating AFC Championship Game matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots – time for everyone to put their phones down and get to work!Meanwhile, it’s been a while since these two AFC powers clashed at playoff time as you have to go all the back to the 2004 season when a very young QB Tom Brady and Company went into the Steel City and bashed Pittsburgh…

The Keys To Betting Notre Dame Basketball Games

Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 12:25 PM

Notre Dame basketball has made the Elite Eight two years running and in both years lost to a team widely believed to be the best in the country at the time (undefeated Kentucky in 2015, North Carolina in 2016). The Fighting Irish are at it again this season, with a 16-3 record and emerging as a key contender in the ACC.More important for college basketball bettors, Notre Dame is cashing tickets. Even though the Irish dropped a tough 83-80 decision at 10th-ranked Florida State last night, it was still an ATS cover as a (+5.5) dog. It marked the fifth…

How To Bet The Butler Bulldogs

Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2:46 PM

The Butler Bulldogs are the poster child for the underdog opportunities that are supposed to reign supreme in March. In a college basketball world where the Cinderellas usually fade away by the Sweet 16, Butler captured everyone’s attention when they reached the NCAA final two straight years. It’s been a while—since 2011 to be exact, since the Bulldogs were on the national stage, but the team they have this year could get them there.Butler is 16-3 in what’s shaping up to be a good Big East Conference this season. More than the quantity of the wins is the quality of…

NFL Playoffs: Conference Champions at Stake!

Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim FeistThis is it, the final weekend of games before the Super Bowl. The last month we've been hearing about playoff seedings, bye weeks and home field advantage. Are all those things really important? Historically it has been during the second round of the playoffs. Teams with the bye have home field advantage and two weeks to prepare, both of which are usually important edges this time of year.    However, during the conference championship games that kick off this weekend, history shows us that the two remaining teams in each conference are often on fairly equal footing, both straight…

Is Kentucky Basketball A Deserving NCAA Title Favorite?

Monday, January 16, 2017 at 2:03 PM

Another year, another loaded class of freshmen in the Kentucky basketball program for John Calipari. The Wildcats are sitting on a 15-2 record with three of the top four players being freshman and the other being a sophomore. Calipari’s success with this – his NCAA title with all freshman in 2012 and his Final Four trips of 2014-15 with mostly young teams, mean the betting market is unmoved by Kentucky’s lack of experience. UK may be sixth in the polls, but they’re first in the hearts of Las Vegas – a 9-2 betting favorite to win the national championship in…

The National Championship Chances Of West Virginia Basketball

Sunday, January 15, 2017 at 3:05 PM

West Virginia basketball made the big splash this week, when the crushed then-undefeated and #1-ranked Baylor 89-68 on Tuesday. After a narrow 74-72 escape over Texas on Saturday, the Mountaineers stand ready to rise in the polls where they’re already ranked 10th. And it’s time to put them squarely in the discussion with fellow Big 12 contenders Baylor and Kansas when it comes to talking about national championship possibilities. The Mountaineers don’t have that individual star that jumps out at you. Esa Ahmad is the leading scorer and he gets 12 per game. Nathan Adrian is the top rebounder and he…

College Basketball Weekend

Sunday, January 15, 2017 at 12:00 AM

I’m in the business of taking notes. I don’t mean that just figuratively, I actually do write down notes for future reference while watching games. An example of this habit was on Saturday while New Mexico and Colorado State were battling it out in what turned out to be a pretty lopsided game at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colorado.I was following this game as I had a play on Colorado State, which never really had a chance as the Lobos were in control virtually the entire game. But there were some things worth noting. This was a pretty chippy affair…

What The Film Says About The NFL Divisional Playoffs

Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 12:52 PM

Smart NFL handicapping is comprehensive. Statistical data is a big part of it, but so are things like personnel matchups and that’s information that can best be gleaned from a studious breakdown of game tape. What follows are some things to take into consideration for each game of this weekend’s NFL Divisional Playoffs.Seahawks (+5, 49.5) Falcons (Saturday, 4:35 PM ET, Fox): Seattle’s offensive tackles, Gary Gilliam and George Fant are frankly about as bad as it gets in the NFL. On Saturday, these two have to block Atlanta’s Vic Beasley and Dwight Freeney. The latter might not be the player he…

How High Can The Boston Celtics Climb?

Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 3:45 PM

The Boston Celtics continue their steady upward progression under head coach Brad Stevens. Now in his fourth year, Stevens has overseen improvement every year. In his first year of 2014, the team started a rebuilding project and won 30 games. In 2015 they jumped up to 40-42 and stole a playoff spot in a weak Eastern Conference. Last year they became a legitimate playoff team, winning 48 games before making a first-round exit. This year they’re on a pace to get 50 wins and currently hold down the #3 spot in the East. How high can the Celtics climb? It’s a…

NFL Playoff Time!

Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist    As the playoffs begin, those who earned the top two seeds in each conference have a key edge, as they get a bye the first week while watching the others duke it out. Sitting at home this past weekend were the Patriots, Chiefs, Cowboys and Seahawk. Why is that significant?  A year ago the 4 bye teams were the Patriots, Broncos, Panthers and Cardinals. They went 4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS.  The rested Patriots had no trouble with the Chiefs while the Panthers jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead over Seattle on the way to a win…

Purdue Basketball Looks Like A Threat

Monday, January 9, 2017 at 3:57 PM

Away from the spotlight of the NFL playoffs, a plucky basketball team from the Midwest made its own statement on Sunday afternoon. The Purdue Boilermakers stepped up and beat Wisconsin 66-55, easily covering the short (-2) spread on their home floor and emerging as an early team to beat in the Big Ten. If you don’t have the Boilermakers on your national radar—and with their odds still 50-1 to win it all, not many do—then it’s time to put them there.Purdue has been a steady winner under head coach Matt Painter. They’ve made 8 of the last 10 NCAA Tournaments,…

The NCAA Title Chances Of Louisville Basketball

Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 6:47 PM

It might only be early January, but Rick Pitino’s Louisville basketball team has already experienced its share of ups and downs. The Cardinals enjoyed a strong run in non-conference play, their only loss coming to undefeated Baylor. Louisville beat good teams in Purdue, Kentucky and Indiana. When ACC play began though, the Cards stumbled. They lost to Virginia and Notre Dame before righting the ship earlier today, beating Georgia Tech 65-50 and getting a cover as a (-13) favorite. So what are we to make of this edition of Louisville basketball? Is this a vintage Pitino national title contender that offers…

Who Are The Real Chicago Bulls?

Friday, January 6, 2017 at 9:41 AM

Who are the real Chicago Bulls? Are they the mediocrity that’s sitting with an 18-18 record, is costing bettors money and is on the fringe of the Eastern Conference playoff picture? Or are they the team that’s twice knocked off LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers, including a 106-94 win on Wednesday?Of course the reality is that they’re both and NBA bettors face the challenge of targeting spots with the Bulls. This is a team with the first prerequisite for NBA success and that’s explosive, superstar talent with experience. Jimmy Butler is one of the league’s best players, averaging 25 points/7…

Basketball Dogs Getting No Respect!

Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 12:00 AM

by Jim Feist   Everyone wants respect. Aretha Franklin sung about it. Comedian Rodney Dangerfield made a comedy career out of it. And smart sports bettors can turn soft numbers into cash  looking at home dogs getting no respect.  Many teams in college basketball and the NBA play significantly better at home than on the road. Last season the Golden State Warriors won a record 73 regular season games. They lost two home games, seven on the road. The eventual champion Cleveland Cavaliers were 33-8 at home, but 24-17 away. And a team like the Memphis Grizzlies was good at home…

NFC Playoffs Preview

Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 11:33 AM

The NFC playoff bracket begins on Saturday night when Detroit goes to Seattle (8:15 PM ET, NBC) and it has the feel of being one where anyone could win it—or at least five of the six teams have a credible shot according to the Vegas market. Below are some initial thoughts on each playoff contender, with their odds of winning the NFC title and Super Bowl in parentheses. Dallas (3-2, 15-4)How much do you trust a rookie quarterback to lead a favorite through the playoffs? That’s the single biggest issue NFL bettors have to decide when assessing the Dallas Cowboys. The…

Inside The Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Championship Odds

Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 11:48 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers were one of the great stories of the year we’re about to say goodbye too tonight, with their NBA championship in June going right alongside the Chicago Cubs’ historic World Series title as the truly memorable sports moments of 2016. As expected, the Cavs have picked up where they left off, jumping out to a 24-7 record, leading the Eastern Conference and winning a 109-108 thriller over Golden State on Christmas Day.So what are we to make of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ NBA championship chances, given the short 2-1 price that’s currently on the board? There are good reasons…

Is This The Year For Baylor Basketball?

Friday, December 30, 2016 at 12:06 PM

The Baylor basketball team has been an unexpected force in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Starting the season unranked, the Bears have blown through a good schedule to remain undefeated and rise to #4 in the polls. The betting market isn’t as sold as the pollsters though. Baylor’s NCAA basketball championship odds are still 35-1,which puts them 13th—including behind two teams they’ve beaten in Louisville and Oregon.Baylor’s history offers good reason for skepticism. The program has been a pretty consistent winner since 2008 under the coaching of Scott Drew, but they’ve also been a tease team that under delivers…

The Super Bowl Path Is There For The Atlanta Falcons

Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 1:15 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have a clear path to the Super Bowl. If they beat New Orleans at home on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, Fox), the Falcons lock up the 2-seed and first-round bye, thereby setting themselves up as the primary challenger to the heavily favored Dallas Cowboys on the NFC side of the bracket.Opinion among football bettors varies as to whether the Cowboys are vulnerable because of their reliance on rookies or if their offensive line and #1 seed position makes them virtually impervious to upsets. I won’t weigh in on that here because the ultimate wagering decision I make…

Breaking Down The San Antonio Spurs NBA Championship Odds

Golden State and Cleveland electrified the country with the great show they put on Christmas Day afternoon. The Warriors and Cavs are quite understandably the love of the betting market as well. But if you’re looking any chance at real value in the NBA futures scene, your best hope lies with the San Antonio Spurs, at a 10-1 price. The Spurs are 25-6, with two more wins than the Cavs and only one back of the Warriors in the loss column. Is San Antonio worth a flyer to win it all in June? There’s a level of basic respect that has…

The Golden State Warriors Take The Christmas Day Stage

Friday, December 23, 2016 at 4:24 PM

The NBA puts on its now-traditional Christmas Day showcase with five games on Sunday and the marquee game is unquestionably the Finals rematch between Golden State and Cleveland (2:30 PM ET, ABC). I won’t try and tell you how “big” this game, at least regarding its long-term consequences—there’s a long way between now and the playoffs. What I will say is that there aren’t too many occasions in the regular season where these teams playing comparable competition and now is the time to do some careful analysis.Golden State may have lost last year’s Finals, but they won the offseason when…

The Case For The Oakland Raiders As A Super Bowl Team

Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 12:03 PM

The Oakland Raiders are currently in the 2-seed for the AFC playoffs. It’s possible they could clinch that spot as early as Christmas night, with a win at home over Indianapolis on Saturday and a Kansas City loss to Denver. Yet, in spite of this favorable position, the Raiders are still a relatively healthy 14-1 to win the Super Bowl. To put that in perspective, it’s lower than Pittsburgh (10-1) and comparable to Atlanta, Green Bay and the New York Giants. None of those four teams have as clear a path to a first-round bye (or any path at all)…

Inside The Struggles Of Michigan State Basketball

Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 11:05 AM

It’s been a rough start to the season for Tom Izzo and the proud Michigan State basketball program. Coming off a stunning first-round exit in last spring’s NCAA Tournament, the Spartans had some rebuilding to do with a number of freshman being counted on for key roles. Then the best of those newcomers, Miles Bridges, got hurt. Most of all though, the losses have simply piled up for Sparty.Michigan State lost three high-profile neutral-site games to Arizona, Kentucky and Baylor all with Bridges in the lineup. Another loss came on November 29 at Duke. The bigger loss came when Bridges,…

by Jim Feist As 2016 draws to a close, we find ourselves smack in the middle of the bowls. You shouldn't be bowled-out, either, as they slowly build to the crescendo until Alabama, Ohio State, Washington and Clemson duke it out. San Diego Bowl (Wed, Dec. 21): A pair of teams with different styles clash as BYU and Wyoming pair off.  Wyoming lost three of four down the stretch as the defense fell apart, allowing 69, 33, 56 and 27 points. They were an 8-point favorite and lost to UNLV, 69-66. At least they can score points behind QB Josh Allen (26…

AARON RODGERS REVIVES THE GREEN BAY PACKERS SUPER BOWL CHANCES

Monday, December 19, 2016 at 12:18 PM

The Green Bay Packer are alive and kicking. With four straight wins, the Packers have climbed off the mat to get their record to 8-6 and now control their own destiny to reach the playoffs. Their season finale at Detroit is taking on the feel of one that could end up chosen as the Sunday Night finale with the NFC North on the line—maybe even a first-round bye. How did the Packers do it?We all know the cliché in football that the quarterback gets the glory when you win and the blame when you lose. And we all know as…

Friday, December 16, 2016 at 12:40 PM

North Carolina will be in the college basketball spotlight early Saturday evening when they play Kentucky in a neutral-site game in Las Vegas (5:45 PM ET, CBS). The Tar Heels came within a basket of a national championship last season and even though dynamic point guard Marcus Paige is gone, there’s plenty of talent left on hand for Roy Williams to make another run at the brass ring.UNC has something we don’t always see from nationally elite programs anymore and it’s an experienced lineup, stocked with upperclassmen. Across the frontline, Justin Jackson is a junior while Isaiah Hicks and Kennedy…

NITPICKING THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS SUPER BOWL BETTING ODDS

Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 1:29 PM

The New England Patriots are in a familiar December spot, a solid 13-5 betting favorite to win the Super Bowl in February. When a price is that short and public respect for a team as high as it is for the Patriots, it becomes necessary for NFL bettors to cast a more jaundiced eye. Before jumping on the bandwagon, a critical look at a favorite’s failings become necessary. It’s become easy in recent years to dismiss any New England shortcomings by saying the three magical words of the pro football language—Brady and Belichick. That’s understandable and it’s respect that’s been 100…

WHERE KANSAS BASKETBALL NEEDS TO IMPROVE

Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 1:17 PM

If there’s anything that’s predictable in the often crazy world of college basketball, it’s the status of Kansas in the national elite. The Jayhawks have won or shared twelve straight conference titles. Since head coach Bill Self arrived in 2004, the program has at least reached the Elite Eight six times, the Final Four twice and won it all once. For college basketball bettors that can make the task of finding value tougher—there’s no sliding under the radar with this program—and this year is no exception, where oddsmakers are offering a stingy 9-1 price on KU to win a national…

NBA Early Season Surprises

Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 12:00 AM

By Jim FeistPreseason prognosticators and handicapping analysis focuses in on what they expect to happen, based on the draft and offseason moves, but there are always surprises at the start of each season.  Here's a look at some of the early NBA surprises.Bulls: Chicago had a makeover, letting go of longtime stars Joakim Noah and Derrek Rose. However, the new-look Bulls are Jimmy Butler's team, helped out in the backcourt by newcomers veterans Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo.  Most impressive is that this team plays excellent defense for Coach Fred Hoiberg, Top 11 in points allowed and field goal shooting…

THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS SUPER BOWL BETTING ODDS

Monday, December 12, 2016 at 1:13 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers might have a tough fight ahead to reach the playoffs, but they have no shortage of backers in Las Vegas. The Steelers are a short 8-1 shot to win the Super Bowl, the fifth-best in the league. Pittsburgh is considered in a class with New England, Dallas, Seattle and Kansas City, the four other teams with comparably low prices to win it all. Unlike those four teams however, the Steelers have a slight problem—they don’t even control their own destiny to reach the postseason.Of course if the chalk holds tonight in Foxboro and the Ravens lose to…

IS IT TIME FOR A LOS ANGELES RAMS REVIVAL?

Friday, December 9, 2016 at 12:14 PM

In spite of a miserable season for the Rams in their first year back in Los Angeles, head coach Jeff Fisher picked up a two-year contract extension. The Rams are 4-8 on the field and only narrowly better at the betting window, with a 4-7-1 ATS showing. Fisher’s hold on an NFL coaching job is a source of some mystery to most observers, but it is worth noting that it was in this same spot last year that the Rams took off.The 2015 edition of the Rams, then in St. Louis, were also 4-8 when they suddenly took off and…

Cokin’s Corner, Thursday 12/8/16

Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 12:00 AM

Another day at the Winter Meetings, and another blockbuster deal. Baseball fans have to be loving the action taking place off the field. The Red Sox/White Sox swap featuring Chris Sale will end up being the headliner of the week. But there was nothing under the radar about the Wednesday trade between the Nationals and those very busy White Sox. The White Sox have transformed their organization in the space of roughly 24 hours with these two big deals. The farm system, which was not good at all, is suddenly the picture of good health. They’re pretty likely to be close…
