I’ve always been known as THE KING OF UPSETS because I have more documented upset calls than any other handicapper in history. So, I was on the lookout for possible “shock the system” underdog opportunities the minute the NFL Wildcard matchups were set in stone. Will we have a big upset this weekend? Will we have multiple big upsets?

I’m not going to post my official plays because that wouldn’t be fair to paying clients. But, I can tell you what I look for when trying to find upset specials or “Dog of the Year” plays during Wildcard Weekend. Historically, this is a strong weekend for underdogs because seeds 3-6 in both conferences are often evenly matched. Will that history repeat itself this weekend?

Here’s what to look for:

*I always start by looking for super-surging underdogs who are playing their best football of the year right now. I’m not going to step out on a dog that limped into the playoffs and probably doesn’t deserve to be there. I want a team that’s playing well enough to be a favorite, but is getting points because oddsmakers are slow to adjust their Power Ratings. The four underdogs this weekend are Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Minnesota, and Washington. I’d say there are certainly some intriguing possibilities in that mix in terms of this angle.

*Next I go on the lookout for false favorites. You’ve heard me say often that the key to making a “shock the system” upset call is having both a great dog AND an overrated or flat favorite. You can cover with underdogs who have motivation…but WINNING OUTRIGHT with them typically involves flaws with the favorite too. Do any of Houston, Baltimore, Green Bay, or Seattle strike you as false favorites? I’m already getting too close to showing my hand just by running that list! Just remember throughout the playoffs…the best underdog bets involve live dogs and vulnerable favorites matched up against each other.

*The third main point I want to make today is that your underdogs need to score points. There are no moral victories in sports betting. They don’t pay anything for “my defense played great, too bad the team lost 17-6.” You can’t win outright without the ability to get points on the board. Plus, it’s always great to have backdoor insurance just in case some breaks go against you. Maybe you don’t get credit for an outright upset call with a seven-point dog that scores in the final minute to trim an 11-point deficit to four. You still cash your ticket. Betting is about making money. Productive offenses put you in position for outright upsets, and often help make up for bad breaks by beating the spread in tough losses.

I have big plays for Wildcard Weekend. Not only will I be attacking the NFL for my clients. But, we also have two additional bowl games leading up to Monday’s BCS Championship game featuring Alabama and Notre Dame…and we also have a huge basketball schedule. You can always purchase my top plays or extended service here at the website with your credit card.
