Network Notebook: Texas A&M/S. Carolina Preview

Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 7:00 AM

The mainstream media is making a big deal about who ISN’T in uniform for Texas A&M and South Carolina as those two SEC contenders open big time college football for the 2014 season. Yes, it’s the team that doesn’t have Johnny Manziel any more visiting the team that doesn’t have Jadeveon Clowney any more. Handicappers need to focus on who IS going to be on the field!

To help you do that for this relatively early Thursday start (6 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. Las Vegas time, televised nationally by the new SEC Network), we’ve grabbed the information boxes from our summer…

Network Notebook: Yanks/Tigers MLB Series Preview

Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 7:00 AM

A few weeks ago, the Detroit Tigers were a virtual lock to make the playoffs. In fact, all the respected “stathead” projection systems were assuring everyone it was a done deal. So much for stats! Since then…

*Detroit’s pitching has collapsed (outside of a couple of studs)

*Kansas City’s caught fire

*Kansas City’s been exploiting an easy schedule (that remains easy)

*Seattle has lifted its play

Those developments knocked Detroit out of first place in the AL Central, and then dropped them behind Seattle in the fight for the second Wildcard spot behind whoever draws the short straw in the Oakland/LA Angels battle at the…

Kelso’s Advanced Sports Betting: Handicapping College Football Openers

The first week of college football action is always a volatile one for the major betting market. Generally speaking, nobody is going to be as DUMB this season as they are NOW regarding knowledge of teams across the nation. No matter how much work you’ve done to prepare, there are still elements of the unknown in all corners of the landscape.

*Many new head coaches

*Many new starting quarterbacks

*Many offensive and defensive coordinators

*Many relatively experienced “units” at the point of attack or in the secondary

*Many quirky schedule situations that haven’t come up before

You’ll know more about what Charlie Strong is doing at…

We’re now just a few days away from the start of the 2014 college football season. You can bet that THE KING OF UPSETS is looking to unleash some shockers in this week’s openers. I have more documented UPSET CALLS than any other handicapper in history! I’m very excited that I can start adding to that lifetime total very soon.

I’m not going to talk about specific teams today because I have to protect that information for my clients. There’s still time for the lines to move two or three points against us if word gets out early. But, I can…

The Cards and neck-and-neck with Milwaukee at the top of the NL Central (and one of those two teams is likely to get at least a Wildcard spot). Pittsburgh has drifted back a bit into a battle for the second Wildcard spot with San Francisco and Atlanta.

There’s still well over a month left in the season for new developments to shake the foundations of the pennant race. What’s clear right now is that…

How Sharps are Betting Sunday’s NFL Preseason TV Doubleheader

Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 11:30 AM

We’re down to the final two games of dress rehearsal weekend. And sharps (professional wagerers) are still trying to get a feel for the new season at hand. They generally misjudged the impact of the newly aggressive enforcement of defensive holding (scoring hasn’t gone up when sharps were sure it would go WAY up). And, many teams just aren’t playing to expectations even when it’s starter vs. starter (as you saw last night when sharps moved games away from key numbers).

Will their luck turn Sunday? It always turns eventually because you can’t be a sharp unless you win! Let’s see…

Network Notebook: Chargers/49ers NFL TV Preview

Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 8:00 PM

The fact that the San Francisco 49ers had to change out the turf in their brand new stadium this week was an apt metaphor for the start of their 2014 season. They can’t get any footing! The Niners have looked utterly inept through two weeks of the exhibition slate.

Baltimore 23, San Francisco 3

Denver 34, San Francisco 0

That’s the wrong side of 57-3 for a team that’s been a championship pick from many pundits!

If San Francisco plays well in their dress rehearsal, nobody will remember what happened when they weren’t trying. But, if those results represent an early red flag…then we…

How Sharps are Betting Saturday’s NFL Preseason Games

Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 12:00 PM

A good night for power favorites on Friday, as New England, Green Bay, and Seattle all jumped to double digit leads at halftime on the way to pointspread cashes. The “public” teams made the public very happy!

Three of the five games stayed Under, continuing the month long trend that ISN’T seeing a huge increase in scoring even though officials are calling a zillion more defensive holding penalties. A few games are exploding (particularly when backups are producing). We’ll we see more points tonight with more quarterbacks having to make their case?

It’s the busiest day of dress rehearsal weekend with EIGHT…

Network Notebook: Saints/Colts NFL TV Preview

Friday, August 22, 2014 at 8:00 PM

Saturday Night’s nationally televised game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts on CBS matches a pair of teams who must be taken seriously as playoff threats but aren’t really seen as Super Bowl teams entering the 2014 season. A look at their postseason losses from January shows why:

*New Orleans lost 23-15 to eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle (off earlier 34-7 loss)

*Indianapolis lost 43-22 to eventual AFC runner-up New England

There’s still some work to do…in a field that has other contenders chasing the elites of the league. Saturday’s potential thriller will help handicappers determine if either (or both) are…

The Green Bay Packers are still a serious Super Bowl threat when quarterback Aaron Rodgers is healthy. But, the past couple of seasons, they’ve clearly fallen behind Seattle and San Francisco in the NFC hierarchy. Bad defense doesn’t win championships!

Green Bay’s dress rehearsal game with the Oakland Raiders Friday Night will be televised nationally by CBS, which will set up the official league-wide regular season opener between the Packers and Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night September 4 (televised by NBC). Wayne Root: What I’ll Be Looking For in Jets/Giants

Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 5:00 PM

Because I was born in New York as a true S.O.B. (son of a butcher), I always love watching the annual Jets/Giants Preseason game on TV. Even though it’s not a game that counts in the standings, both teams do take the rivalry somewhat seriously. And, they’re glad to get added intensity like that during the dress rehearsal portion of the game when it’s starter vs. starter.

I still have great connections in the Big Apple. As a result, I’ll probably be releasing a selection in this Friday Night showdown. It’s not fair to my paying clients to post that play…

Everyone remembers that the up-and-coming Philadelphia Eagles won their division and made the playoffs last year…and that the Pittsburgh Steelers missed the postseason after another disappointing campaign. But, that does that automatically mean the Eagles will rule the state of Pennsylvania once again in the 2014 season?

The betting markets say “maybe but just barely!”

Summer “regular season win totals” centered around 9 for Philadelphia (after a 10-6 performance last year), and either 8.5 or 9 for Pittsburgh (after a pedestrian 8-8 run). That’s surprisingly close considering that Philadelphia is a young team positioned to improve even further under second-year head coach…

But, they were in the same division. Seemed automatic that Oakland would earn the top seed in the AL and home field advantage, while the Halos would be forced into a coin flip Wildcard game just to join the A’s in the brackets.

If you’re like most recreational football bettors, you’re chomping at the bit to bet FAVORITES during this week’s dress rehearsal games in the NFL Preseason. All the teams are going to be trying for at least a half, and possibly up to three quarters. That means the BEST teams are going to dominate. Right?

While it’s true that favorites did go 10-6 ATS a year ago this week, that’s no guarantee we’ll see a replay in 2014. And, some of last year’s favorites covered in the fourth quarter (or in overtime) with backups.

That still only lifted them to four games over .500 entering their current series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. And, they didn’t pick up any ground over the weekend on NL East leading Washington because the Nats were busy sweeping the Bucs.

Kelso’s Advanced Sports Betting: Handicapping Dress Rehearsals

It’s been months since we’ve had some real football to handicap. By real…I mean teams going all out to execute at acceptable levels. We’re still several days away of REAL football where wins and losses count in the standings. But, at least this coming weekend in the NFL dress rehearsals, offenses are trying to get to the end zone rather than just working on timing…and defenses are trying to stop them rather than just clarifying work assignments on the fly.

With that in mind, it’s the perfect time for a refresher course on how KELSO STURGEON handicaps football. If you’re new…

Kelso’s Advanced Sports Betting: Using NFL Preseason “Trends”

As a general rule, I shy away from using what are commonly called “trends” or “angles” when handicapping sports. You longtime students here in my College of Advanced Sports Betting and Handicapping know that I emphasize PLAYMAKERS and GAMEBREAKERS on the field, and THE EMOTION FACTOR as an intangible that can magnify advantages at the point of attack.

But, the NFL Preseason arguably provides the best opportunity to use “trends” and “angles” in your handicapping. I’m not going to list any that I’m currently using myself because those will be influencing client selections over the next few weeks. But, I’ll be…

There is no dispute the National Football League pre-season presents many additional challenges to handicappers but they can be overcome by putting in a few extra hours doing all the work that produces winners. As most of you know I have contended for years the pre-season can be a major profit…

Network Notebook: Tigers/Pirates Series Preview

Sunday, August 10, 2014 at 8:00 PM

In some years, a series like Detroit/Pittsburgh wouldn’t even get noticed. Pittsburgh was off-the-radar for a couple of decades. And, the media tends to focus on Interleague matchups “on the coast” rather than in the midsection of the country. This week’s four-game set (two in Pittsburgh, followed by two in Detroit) suddenly looms very large because BOTH teams are in tight Central divisional races.

*Detroit has once again seen its lead trimmed in the AL Central because the Kansas City Royals got red hot. What had been the safest lead in the majors is now in nailbiter mode.

*Pittsburgh is in a…

Network Notebook: MLB TV Preview Nats/Braves

Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 9:00 PM

That devastating 0-8 Western swing for the Atlanta Braves has put them in a virtual “must-win” spot Sunday Night against NL East leading Washington in a game you can watch on ESPN. Winning a blowout in the series opener put an end to the long losing streak. But, unless Washington has their own long losing streak coming up in the very near future…Atlanta must take whatever action they can to stay within striking distance.

If you weren’t paying attention because you were gearing up for football…

*Atlanta went 0-3 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers

*Atlanta went 0-3 in San Diego against the…

How Sharps are Betting Saturday’s NFL Preseason Games

Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 11:00 AM

Friday was a better night for sharps on their most aggressive plays, as Buffalo covered the early numbers on the road at Carolina with a one-week head start, and the Over in Philadelphia/Chicago was never in doubt. The general tendency to play ALL of the “Overs” is still under water for the Preseason, and was lucky to go 3-3 last night (late TD from Carolina prevented 2-4). But, the biggest Over moves in Kansas City and Chicago represented a pair of fireworks shows.

Let’s see what the Wise Guys have been betting in Saturday Night’s Grand Slam of pro football action…

Jim Sez: NFL Preseason Update + Looking at the Big 10

Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 12:00 AM

One thing about these NFL Preseason Week 1 games is that “shooting stars” can appear at any moment:

Take the Thursday night game out west between the Dallas Cowboys and the host San Diego Chargers:

There were the Chargers all hyped up about their so-called three-headed running back system that included Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown, and yet it was rookie RB…

Network Notebook: NFC North Preview

Friday, August 8, 2014 at 7:00 PM

Though the media is enthralled with all the quality in the NFC West division (home of the defending league champion Seattle Seahawks), the NFC North could arrive very quickly this year as a true power division in pro football:

*Green Bay went 8-7-1 even though Aaron Rodgers missed a lot of time

*Chicago went 8-8 even though Jay Cutler missed games and played hurt

*Detroit went 7-9 with a -12 turnover differential that’s due to improve

*Minnesota went 5-10-1, but made a head coaching change that should help

Green Bay is a serious Super Bowl threat with Rodgers on the field. Chicago under second-year head…

Wayne Root: Will “Johnny Football” be an August Sensation?

Friday, August 8, 2014 at 2:00 PM

Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M (and seemingly right here in Las Vegas over the summer!) takes the field as a Cleveland Brown for the first time Saturday Night in Detroit. As a fan of iconoclasts (and one myself!) I have to say that I’m very excited to see how this summer is going to play out for the hyperactive young quarterback.

There’s a chance that Manziel’s energy and scrambling ability could turn the Browns into a “preseason juggernaut” against vanilla defenses who aren’t interested in spending all night trying to chase him down. But, there’s also a chance that he’ll be…

How Sharps are Betting Friday’s NFL Preseason Games

Friday, August 8, 2014 at 11:00 AM

Sharps haven’t been particularly pleased with their early results in the 2014 Preseason. Their huge support of Buffalo in the Hall of Fame game wasn’t rewarded. Nor was their heavy investments in the Seattle Seahawks Thursday Night in Denver (though there was some buy back before kickoff). Plus, the “blanket” coverage for Overs has been a poor choice to this point. Though, the biggest move to the Over Thursday in the Cincy/Kansas City game proved to be a very easy winner.

Let’s see how the Wise Guys have been betting Friday’s sextet of NFL exhibition games. We’ll take them in schedule…
