Coach Ron Meyer
In case the name Ron Meyer doesn't ring a bell, I'm a two-time AFC Coach of the Year - with the Indianapolis Colts, then with the New England Patriots. I coached Eric Dickerson and Craig James in the legendary Pony Express at SMU. I came up under Tom Landry at Dallas and won myself a Super Bowl Ring. I know every important person in football and they know me.
And they didn't load me up with honors because I look good with a chalkboard - but because I knew how to make...

Midmajor Moneymaker
Two good games go Friday night and three of the teams playing are from the ranks of the midmajors. UTEP takes on Houston in an interesting Conference USA game. The Cougars are facing some sizeable point spreads as Case Keenum passes his way into the record book. I watched the tapes of their opener, as well as UTEP's so I could know what to expect on Friday night. And Marshall takes on West Virginia. The film of Marshall's opener against Ohio State provided some real clues as to how this one will play out. One of these games is an excellent, rated play, a Midmajor Moneymaker that will bankroll you for the weekend

Saturday Mismatch Move
Saturday Mismatch Move
Last Saturday I opened up the college season with a huge win in my top game, as Oklahoma State (-17) routed Washington State 65-17, a game that proved my conviction that the talent mismatch was so strong that the Cowboys could virtually name the score. I've got another play ready for Saturday. I won't promise you this one will cover the line by 31 points, but I can tell you it grades out as strong as last week's, it has the same kind of mismatches as last week, especially when measured against the spread, and it will get the money! The same as last week!

My time of year is here and that's football season. But I haven't lost sight that baseball still has an exciting finish to the regular season ahead, in addition to the drama that is the playoffs and World Series. I've been picking winners all year in baseball and I sure don't intend to stop now! When I was coaching, I always emphasized the pursuit of excellence and hard work to my players, my assistant coaches and especially to myself. That's why when I hear other handicappers say they simply can't keep up with the task of handicapping both football and baseball simultaneously, I have to roll my eyes in disbelief. When you love sports, love picking winners and love making money, picking two sports is no more difficult than walking and chewing gum at the same time

'COACH'S CORNER' With Two-Time AFC Coach of the Year RON MEYER
IT'S BOB STOOPS OF OKLAHOMA VS.MARK STOOPS OF FSU THIS SATURDAY
As a former head coach, I love it when a coaching storyline is the one of the celebrated parts of a game build up.
Even though the name 'Stoops' has been prominent in college coaching circles for many years now, this Saturday's meeting between Bob Stoops (head coach of Oklahoma) and Mark Stoops (defensive coordinator of Florida State) will be the first time members of...

MANY CONFERENCE GAMES THIS WEEK WILL HAVE COACHES ON THEIR TOES
Many conferences in recent years have gotten smart about scheduling. When you play in a very physical league, finishing off the campaign with two months of non-stop conference wars is just too brutal. Yes, you can build a nice record in September by scheduling cupcakes. That will come back to haunt you in November when your team just got beat up four weeks in a row...

SEVERAL 'NEW FACES' IN COLLEGE COACHINGHAD VERY POOR DEBUTS THIS WEEK
I told you during my summer series on 'New Faces in New Places' in football coaching ranks that I'd be paying very close attention to early season results. Teams in transition have a lot of volatility. A new coach can turn a program around, and earn profits for Las Vegas bettors who had faith in him. A new coach can endure serious struggles in his first season,...

EARLY SEASON WINNERS WILL COME FROM YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF SCRIMMAGE LINE
Whenever I tell acquaintances in Vegas that they should focus on "the line" when handicapping football games, they think I'm talking about the Vegas line.
"Hey, I'm focused. The oddsmakers say so-and-so is a 7-point favorite."
I'm not talking about that line. I'm talking about the line of scrimmage, where the offensive line battles the defensive line in the single...

THINGS JUST KEEP GETTING WORSE AND WORSEFOR MISSOURI COACH GARY PINKEL
This past summer brought about the realization that nobody thinks Missouri's program is worth having in their conference.
*Missouri flirted as hard as they could with the Big Ten. It was like one of those reality shows where a girl who isn't as hot as she thinks she is overplays her hand. The Big Ten wasn't interested. The Big Ten bent over backwards to make it...

BE SURE YOU KNOW WHO'S READY TO THRIVETHIS WEEK IN THE COLLEGES
It's possibly the single biggest coaching challenge in all of sports...getting an inexperienced college football team ready for their season opener.
Sure, college basketball teams can be inexperienced too. That's only five starters you're talking about...and the plays you run on offense aren't very complicated at all. A freshman center knows how to post up. A freshman...

HOW DO YOU PREPARE
WITH A SUSPENDED QUARTERBACK?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are dealing with a complicated issue this summer. How do they prepare their team for the regular season knowing that star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will miss at least the first four games of the regular season, and possibly the first six games (if his six-game suspension isn't reduced).
Big Ben won't be playing in September. Byron Leftwich and...

THE COACHING ANGLE IS MOST IMPORTANTDURING DRESS REHEARSAL WEEKEND
Knowing a head coach's mindset is always important when you're trying to pick pointspread winners. I think I've made that case to you here at the website since I started writing articles. I hope you're taking that to hear whenever you try to handicap a game, in whatever sport happens to be in season at the time.
In terms of the NFL exhibition slate, Week Three is...

THREE NEW COACHES IN THE
MOUNTAIN WEST, AND WAC CONFERENCES
We wrap up our on-again, off-again series on new college coaches today with
a look at the three "new faces" in the Mountain West and WAC conferences. If
you missed my earlier reports on big name changes in the BCS leagues, and conference
rundowns in the other mid-majors, please check the archives.

TWO NEW COACHES MAY HAVE IMPACTIN OFTEN OVERLOOKED SUN BELT
Sometimes the best pointspread situations occur when there's a coaching change in a conference that hardly anyone is paying attention to. The media doesn't notice at first. Your buddies probably don't even know which teams play in some of these lesser conferences. If you're not paying attention, you're missing out an opportunity to win week after week for most of the season...
