Saturday Night’s nationally televised game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts on CBS matches a pair of teams who must be taken seriously as playoff threats but aren’t really seen as Super Bowl teams entering the 2014 season. A look at their postseason losses from January shows why:
*New Orleans lost 23-15 to eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle (off earlier 34-7 loss)
*Indianapolis lost 43-22 to eventual AFC runner-up New England
There’s still some work to do…in a field that has other contenders chasing the elites of the league. Saturday’s potential thriller will help handicappers determine if either (or both) are…

Five dress rehearsal games on the pro football exhibition calendar Friday Night, including the always entertaining “Battle of New York” featuring the Jets and Giants, and the nationally televised game between the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers. If you’re a night owl, Chicago at Seattle could be a thriller given the offensive aggression of the Bears and the defensive aggression of the Seahawks.
Let’s see how sharps have been betting this Friday quintet. Games are presented in rotation order…

The Green Bay Packers are still a serious Super Bowl threat when quarterback Aaron Rodgers is healthy. But, the past couple of seasons, they’ve clearly fallen behind Seattle and San Francisco in the NFC hierarchy. Bad defense doesn’t win championships!
Green Bay’s dress rehearsal game with the Oakland Raiders Friday Night will be televised nationally by CBS, which will set up the official league-wide regular season opener between the Packers and Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night September 4 (televised by NBC). The team has a chance to make a very clear statement about 2014 right off the bat. Struggle vs. Oakland…

THERE’S MORE NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 PREVIEWS AS WE TACKLE A SLEW OF WEEKEND GAMES…
PLUS WE WRAP UP OUR COLLEGE GRIDIRON REPORTSWITH A LOOK AT THE MOUNTAIN WEST & SUN BELT
By Jim Hurley
The NFL Preseason Week 3 games—those so-called “dress rehearsal” games—wrap up on Saturday/Sunday with 10 games in all…And we’re gonna get you our Jim Sez quick-hitter previews for half of ‘em in just a moment plus there’s College Football goodies comin’ your way too but first this key reminder as we draw ever-so-close to the start of the regular season:

Because I was born in New York as a true S.O.B. (son of a butcher), I always love watching the annual Jets/Giants Preseason game on TV. Even though it’s not a game that counts in the standings, both teams do take the rivalry somewhat seriously. And, they’re glad to get added intensity like that during the dress rehearsal portion of the game when it’s starter vs. starter.
I still have great connections in the Big Apple. As a result, I’ll probably be releasing a selection in this Friday Night showdown. It’s not fair to my paying clients to post that play…

Between now and late Sunday evening, sports bettors will get a very good look at the most important players on all 32 NFL teams. This is a RESEARCH opportunity that students in my College of Advanced Sports Betting and Handicapping absolutely, positively can’t pass up!
I strongly encourage you to watch as many games as you can on live TV. And, if you have the NFL Network (which you should), record all the others so you can watch them at your leisure between now and the start of the regular season. You actually have time to do that because next week’s…

Everyone remembers that the up-and-coming Philadelphia Eagles won their division and made the playoffs last year…and that the Pittsburgh Steelers missed the postseason after another disappointing campaign. But, that does that automatically mean the Eagles will rule the state of Pennsylvania once again in the 2014 season?
The betting markets say “maybe but just barely!”
Summer “regular season win totals” centered around 9 for Philadelphia (after a 10-6 performance last year), and either 8.5 or 9 for Pittsburgh (after a pedestrian 8-8 run). That’s surprisingly close considering that Philadelphia is a young team positioned to improve even further under second-year head coach…

THE NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 UPDATE:
THE "DRESS REHEARSAL" GAMES ARE HERE AND WE'RE CHECKING OUT STEELERS-EAGLES, RAIDERS-PACKERS & MORE
THE COLLEGE GRIDIRON REPORT: WE WEIGH IN ON THE AAC & C-USA
No doubt there is a certain segment of NFL fans that will be quick to voice their opinions and tell you these ongoing Preseason games don't mean a thing. But ask NFL head coaches/players and many will tell you these NFL Preseason Week 3 games—yes, the so-called "dress rehearsal" games where starters often go into the second half (and sometimes very deep into the second half) are ultra-valuable in shaping…

For the bulk of the 2014 Major League Baseball season, the Los Angeles Angels were locked into a Wildcard spot behind the amazing Oakland A’s. Those were the two best teams in the sport. But, they were in the same division. Seemed automatic that Oakland would earn the top seed in the AL and home field advantage, while the Halos would be forced into a coin flip Wildcard game just to join the A’s in the brackets.
But, after Oakland made news with some high profile trades to strengthen its starting rotation…something surprising happened. The Angels caught them from behind! At…

If you’re like most recreational football bettors, you’re chomping at the bit to bet FAVORITES during this week’s dress rehearsal games in the NFL Preseason. All the teams are going to be trying for at least a half, and possibly up to three quarters. That means the BEST teams are going to dominate. Right?
While it’s true that favorites did go 10-6 ATS a year ago this week, that’s no guarantee we’ll see a replay in 2014. And, some of last year’s favorites covered in the fourth quarter (or in overtime) with backups.
*Last year’s biggest dress rehearsal favorite…Denver -6.5 vs.…

Just when it looked like the Atlanta Braves were down for the count and out of the National League playoff picture, they up and swept the powerful Oakland A’s! That still only lifted them to four games over .500 entering their current series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. And, they didn’t pick up any ground over the weekend on NL East leading Washington because the Nats were busy sweeping the Bucs.
From the Pittsburgh’s perspective, THEY’RE now the team that may be down and out because of that lost weekend in the nation’s capital. They went from knocking on the door of…

It’s been months since we’ve had some real football to handicap. By real…I mean teams going all out to execute at acceptable levels. We’re still several days away of REAL football where wins and losses count in the standings. But, at least this coming weekend in the NFL dress rehearsals, offenses are trying to get to the end zone rather than just working on timing…and defenses are trying to stop them rather than just clarifying work assignments on the fly.
With that in mind, it’s the perfect time for a refresher course on how KELSO STURGEON handicaps football. If you’re new…

Hope you all haven’t had your fill of “Johnny Football” because tonight’s Cleveland Browns at Washington Redskins game will get you more about Browns’ rookie QB Johnny Manziel than you could ever possibly have hoped… we might even find out this evening what is Manziel’s all-time favorite movie!
The fact of the matter is Manziel-mania (that’s what they have been calling it in Cleveland for…
Sunday, August 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM
We have to admit that the hype was more intense a couple of weeks ago than it is right now for Monday Night’s Preseason battle between Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Manziel of the Cleveland Browns and Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins. On paper, this was going to be HUGE!
On the field…
*Manziel didn’t impress in is debut at Detroit last week
*Manziel has been outclassed in practice by projected starting quarterback Brian Hoyer
*Manziel made headlines by being late to a time-changed early morning meeting, extending the storyline that he lacks the discipline it takes to thrive at this level.

Still three games left in Week Two of the 2014 pro football Preseason. And, they’re three doozies! We have a potential Super Bowl preview starting things off Sunday afternoon with Denver at San Francisco in a game that will be televised by the NFL Network. That’s followed Sunday evening by Kansas City at Carolina in a battle of playoff teams who are both hoping to take another step forward this year. Then, Monday, the much-hyped battle between “Johnny Football” of the Cleveland Browns and RGIII of the Washington Redskins.
How have professional wagerers been betting those three games this week? Let’s…

The window of opportunity for the “Peyton Manning Era” in Denver is closing quickly. He’s old, fragile, and nearing retirement. The Broncos made it to the Super Bowl last year, only to be swamped by Seattle in an uncompetitive blowout. Can they go the distance this season? Or, are Kansas City and San Diego now such dynamic threats in the AFC West that the Broncos aren’t even sure to win their division?
Our eighth and final divisional preview from our summer series features the AFC West. Here are the numbers from our key indicator stats…

A huge eight game schedule Saturday on pro football’s exhibition slate. Let’s jump right in to see how sharps have been betting sides and totals leading up to our single biggest day yet. Did Friday Night’s scoring explosion influence totals betting? Onto the games!
GREEN BAY AT ST. LOUIS: sharps are sure expecting a lot of points here! An opener of 40 is all the way up to 42.5 or 43 as we go to press. This is an indoor game, and we can expect aggressiveness from both offenses. St. Louis has been bet up from an opener of -1.5 to…

THE COLLEGE GRIDIRON REPORT:YOUR PAC-12 “SURPRISE TEAM” THIS YEAR PLUS THE LEAGUE’S 2013 POINTSPREAD STANDINGS You know the deal—NFL Preseason games mean a little more time on the field for the “1’s” and we’ve even noticed where a batch of teams have played some starters for a half-or-more while getting closer and closer to next week’s so-called “dress rehearsal” games.
Hey, maybe it really just dawned on us the other night when ESPN play-by-play voice Mike Tirico—during the course of Chicago’s come-from-behind 20-19 non-cover win against 3-point underdog…
Friday, August 15, 2014 at 7:00 PM
Because the mainstream media and public pay so little attention to strength of schedule, it’s easy for teams (or full NFL divisions) to be much better or worse than is generally realized. That appears to be the case with the AFC North last year. Despite Pittsburgh and Baltimore having recent Super Bowls on their resumes…and despite Cincinnati outclassing those teams on the way to the division title…what was seen as a “power” division was actually a big disappointment.
Be sure to pay special to the strength of schedule rankings that we post every season in our previews based on calculations done…

The first multi-game night of the new NFL week brings FOUR interesting matchups to the betting card. Let’s see how the Wise guys have been playing that quartet. Then we’ll be back Saturday to look at a busier eight game ticket…and again on Sunday to wrap up the weekend with the TV games set for Sunday and Monday.
We start with the NFL Network telecast of Philadelphia at New England, taking the full Friday slate in rotation order…
PHILADELPHIA AT NEW ENGLAND: New England opened at a field goal on their home field. Sharps liked Philadelphia on the key number, and bet…
Friday, August 15, 2014 at 7:00 AM
The New England Patriots will make their first national TV appearance of the 2014 season Thursday when they host the Philadelphia Eagles in a game that will be shown live on the NFL Network. The Pats were inauspicious in their Preseason debut last week, virtually no-showing in a blowout loss at Washington. Tom Brady didn’t suit up, and is likely to slowly build his readiness before the regular season opener in Miami.
Do the Patriots have much to sweat in this year’s AFC race? They might be able to coast until November and still have it easy! Brady is Hall-of-Fame bound,…

NFL PRESEASON WEEK 2 WEEKEND PREVIEWS
By Jim Hurley
Let’s just say that some NFL teams (and head coaches) would like to win at least two or three preseason games this summer…Maybe it’s to wipe away the bad taste of a really bad 2013 season (we’re thinking about the Atlanta Falcons here, folks) or maybe it’s a head coach who needs a summertime “feel-good” moment or two (right, Dallas boss-man Jason Garrett?).
In any event —and as we’ve been telling you for more than two decades now here in these daily "Jim Sez" columns—the preseason means different things to different folks in NFL-land…
Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 5:00 PM
As I was handicapping this week’s NFL exhibition games, it occurred to me that we have several teams in the Super Bowl discussion matched up against each other. Now, this is obviously the Preseason so we’re not going to see much in terms of regular season intensity. But, the matchups allow you the opportunity to think NOW about how the championship chase is likely to go.
Here are the matchups I’m talking about, listed in rotation order so you can easily circle them in your schedules…
Philadelphia at New England (Friday)
San Diego at Seattle (Friday)
Denver at San Francisco (Sunday)
Kansas City at Carolina…
Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 1:00 PM
As a general rule, I shy away from using what are commonly called “trends” or “angles” when handicapping sports. You longtime students here in my College of Advanced Sports Betting and Handicapping know that I emphasize PLAYMAKERS and GAMEBREAKERS on the field, and THE EMOTION FACTOR as an intangible that can magnify advantages at the point of attack.
But, the NFL Preseason arguably provides the best opportunity to use “trends” and “angles” in your handicapping. I’m not going to list any that I’m currently using myself because those will be influencing client selections over the next few weeks. But, I’ll be…

THE NFL PRESEASON WEEK 2 REPORT:
WE PREVIEW FRIDAY’S FOUR GAMES INCLUDING EAGLES-PATS & CHARGERS-SEAHAWKSPLUS THERE’S GROWING “HEAT” ON SOME OF THE NFL’S NEW COORDINATORS
By Jim Hurley
Gotta say that one of the really intriguing parts about this year’s NFL Preseason games is the coverage a batch of new coordinators are getting:
For example, the New York Giants—fresh off a non-playoff season for the fourth time in the past five years—are attempting to fix a “broken” offense (that’s what co-owner John Mara called it, remember?) and so the NFC East team brought former Green Bay Packers’ QB coach Ben McAdoo to get things…

Think America is ready for Football Season to start?
In last weekend’s opening batch of NFL Preseason Week 1 games, the television ratings were “through the roof” in many markets as the San Diego Chargers’ local affiliate—for example— claims the team’s 27-7 win against the Dallas Cowboys did a whopping 20.2 television rating and that’s better than any NBA regular-season game last year or a whole lot of big Major-League Baseball games this 2014…
Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 9:00 PM
It wasn’t that long ago that pundits were penciling in the Toronto Blue Jays as the likely winner of the AL East. The Jays had a potent offense that was running roughshod over the whole league. And, nobody else in what is usually the class division of the Majors could get their acts together. Boston and Tampa Bay had inexplicably fallen off the map as Preseason co-favorites. Baltimore and the NY Yankees were nothing special.
A lot’s changed since!
Baltimore has been on fire the last two months (36-19 since mid-June…an even better 16-8 since the All-Star Break), and now has put…
Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 7:00 AM
After the games of Monday Night July 21, the Kansas City Royals were 48-50, and seemingly had little chance to make a run at the playoffs. They had already fizzled after an earlier hot streak. And, it’s very hard to rise up to 15 or 20 games over .500 when you’re sitting below the .500 mark as you approach 100 games (out of 162 in a full-season schedule).
And they were trailing powerhouse Detroit!
It just wasn’t going to happen. And, then, maybe it did!
Kansas City won its last 2 games at the Chicago White Sox
Kansas City went 3-1 in a four-game…

The start of the college football season is now just a couple of weeks away. You probably know the first big night of action is Thursday August 28, when Texas A&M visits South Carolina and Ole Miss plays Boise State in Atlanta to highlight the kickoff card. This means you really need to start paying attention to injury and suspension news. These aren’t headlines you can file away in your “I’ll worry about that later” file. Worry about them now!
If you’ve been studying all the “returning starter” data in those summer newsstand publications, your numbers are about to take a…

I like to “read and react” to developing stories here in my College of Advanced Sports Betting and Handicapping so that the coursework has immediate real-world impact for students. Watching the NFL Preseason action this past weekend alerted me to something sharp handicappers need to pay very close attention to.
The Houston Texans may be in huge trouble!
Now, it’s only a Preseason opener…and it’s very dangerous to draw conclusions off a virtual scrimmage in August. Maybe Houston decided ahead of time they were going to no-show the opener and gradually build to the regular season. I can tell you from having…

In some years, a series like Detroit/Pittsburgh wouldn’t even get noticed. Pittsburgh was off-the-radar for a couple of decades. And, the media tends to focus on Interleague matchups “on the coast” rather than in the midsection of the country. This week’s four-game set (two in Pittsburgh, followed by two in Detroit) suddenly looms very large because BOTH teams are in tight Central divisional races.
*Detroit has once again seen its lead trimmed in the AL Central because the Kansas City Royals got red hot. What had been the safest lead in the majors is now in nailbiter mode.
*Pittsburgh is in a…

That devastating 0-8 Western swing for the Atlanta Braves has put them in a virtual “must-win” spot Sunday Night against NL East leading Washington in a game you can watch on ESPN. Winning a blowout in the series opener put an end to the long losing streak. But, unless Washington has their own long losing streak coming up in the very near future…Atlanta must take whatever action they can to stay within striking distance.
If you weren’t paying attention because you were gearing up for football…

*Atlanta went 0-3 in San Diego against the…

Friday was a better night for sharps on their most aggressive plays, as Buffalo covered the early numbers on the road at Carolina with a one-week head start, and the Over in Philadelphia/Chicago was never in doubt. The general tendency to play ALL of the “Overs” is still under water for the Preseason, and was lucky to go 3-3 last night (late TD from Carolina prevented 2-4). But, the biggest Over moves in Kansas City and Chicago represented a pair of fireworks shows.
Let’s see what the Wise Guys have been betting in Saturday Night’s Grand Slam of pro football action…

One thing about these NFL Preseason Week 1 games is that “shooting stars” can appear at any moment:

There were the Chargers all hyped up about their so-called three-headed running back system that included Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown, and yet it was rookie RB…
Friday, August 8, 2014 at 7:00 PM
Though the media is enthralled with all the quality in the NFC West division (home of the defending league champion Seattle Seahawks), the NFC North could arrive very quickly this year as a true power division in pro football:
*Green Bay went 8-7-1 even though Aaron Rodgers missed a lot of time
*Chicago went 8-8 even though Jay Cutler missed games and played hurt
*Detroit went 7-9 with a -12 turnover differential that’s due to improve
*Minnesota went 5-10-1, but made a head coaching change that should help
Green Bay is a serious Super Bowl threat with Rodgers on the field. Chicago under second-year head…

Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M (and seemingly right here in Las Vegas over the summer!) takes the field as a Cleveland Brown for the first time Saturday Night in Detroit. As a fan of iconoclasts (and one myself!) I have to say that I’m very excited to see how this summer is going to play out for the hyperactive young quarterback.
There’s a chance that Manziel’s energy and scrambling ability could turn the Browns into a “preseason juggernaut” against vanilla defenses who aren’t interested in spending all night trying to chase him down. But, there’s also a chance that he’ll be…

Sharps haven’t been particularly pleased with their early results in the 2014 Preseason. Their huge support of Buffalo in the Hall of Fame game wasn’t rewarded. Nor was their heavy investments in the Seattle Seahawks Thursday Night in Denver (though there was some buy back before kickoff). Plus, the “blanket” coverage for Overs has been a poor choice to this point. Though, the biggest move to the Over Thursday in the Cincy/Kansas City game proved to be a very easy winner.
Let’s see how the Wise Guys have been betting Friday’s sextet of NFL exhibition games. We’ll take them in schedule…

THE NFL PRESEASON WEEK 1 THURSDAY RE-CAPS & SATURDAY NIGHT PREVIEWS…
THE BASEBALL REPORT:YESTERDAY’S DIAMOND NEWSMAKERS INCLUDES THE CUBS NEW SUPERSTAR
By Jim Hurley
Do we look surprised, ‘cause we are!
Okay, so the NFL Preseason Week 1 card swung into action on Thursday night with six games from coast-to-coast and we had to rub our eyes to see if what we were seeing was true—there was Denver QB Peyton Manning playing into the third quarter in the “Super Bowl rematch” game against Seattle and what about the fact Seahawks QB Russell Wilson played deep into the second quarter of that same tilt?
Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 7:00 PM
Last year was a strange one in the NFC South. Perennial power Atlanta collapsed out of the blue, falling to 4-12 after coming oh-so-close to a Super Bowl berth. Carolina finally figured out how to win close games, and surged to 12-4 before struggling to move the ball in the playoffs. New Orleans had weeks where they looked like a superpower, but managed only an 11-5 record because of poor road play. Tampa Bay? While rebuilding they decided to dump head coach Greg Schiano and start over with Lovie Smith.
This all means things could get VERY interesting in 2014! Atlanta…

You may have seen that I’ll be releasing a couple of decent-sized plays this weekend in NFL Preseason action (at least one 25-unit selection, and a 50-unit selection). I’m unable to talk specifically about those particular matchups because I must protect the information for my paying clients. But, I do want to talk generally for you students in my College of Advanced Sports Betting and Handicapping about what it takes for an analyst to step out aggressively in August.
*First, I want clear evidence that one team is going to be trying much harder than the other. It’s important that you…

We pick back up again with our NFL divisional previews as Preseason action returns to the schedule Thursday Night. It’s the ideal time to look at the NFC West because both superpowers from that division take the field on the first multi-game night of 2014.
*San Francisco visits Baltimore live on the NFL Network at 7:30 p.m. ET
*Seattle visits Denver in an immediate Super Bowl rematch at 9 p.m. ET

Last week the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals made a publicized trade that sent pitcher John Lackey from Red Sox Nation to Redbird Nation just in time for the NL Central pennant race. The Cards sent pitcher Joe Kelly and others to the Sox in exchange. Tonight, Kelly makes his first start in a Red Sox uniform…in St. Louis against his former team!

The AL East has largely fallen off the radar this season because the traditional powers are having subpar seasons. Boston and Tampa Bay made more news last week for big trades than they had all season for baseball quality. The Yankees are in a transition year between the ending Jeter-era and whatever’s going to come next. That leaves BALTIMORE and TORONTO to determine who’s going to make the playoffs.
And, those two teams start a three-game series Tuesday Night in Canada!
Baltimore has shaken off an unimpressive start to 2014 with a solid run in recent weeks. Toronto managed just the opposite…a…

The last time we were together I talked about the New York Giants because they were playing in the Hall of Fame game this past Sunday Night against Buffalo. This time we move to the New York Jets since they debut this Thursday at home against the Indianapolis Colts.
